Poor Conchita Wurst. Since winning this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, haters have used her as a scapegoat for a series of tragedies. Last month religious leaders blamed her for the Balkan floods. Now some football fans say she is responsible for Spain’s shock World Cup exit.
So why is all this happening? Well, it’s all down to series of bizzare coincidences regarding the last time Austria won the Eurovision Song Contest, which was in 1966.
1966 and 2014: The Parallels
Atletico Madrid won La Liga
Real Betis were relegated
Deportivo La Coruña were promoted from Spain’s second division
Real Madrid conquered European football
Both AC Milan and Manchester United failed to qualify for Europe
Last but not least, Spain went into the World Cup as European champions, but went out in the group stage
So does this mean England will miraculously get out of the group stage and win the whole thing? Or will Brazil, being the host nation, secure a record sixth World Cup? Looks like the answers may lie with Conchita…
Update, 20 June 2014: They think it’s all over, it is now! Costa Rica has sealed England’s World Cup fate. It’s all down to Brazil to deliver the expectations as the host nation.
