Emmelie de Forest, winner of Eurovision 2013, has proven to be a bit of a chameleon in recent months. The cover of her latest single “Drunk Tonight” shows her all sultry in a bathing suit, while the single itself moves a few inches away from hippie and a bit closer to pop. We had an exclusive chat with Emmelie on the day she released her “Acoustic Session” EP of “Drunk Tonight” along with a few covers. (If you missed our conversation, you can check it out here). She promised to release a few videos to go along with it, and today the first one has dropped!

Emmelie pays hommage to Nirvana and its lead singer Kurt Cobain in her rendition of “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. The guitar and viola give the original a more symphonic sound, while the song lets Emmelie show us a bit more edge and rawness. She manages the grit of Kurt’s “hello, hello, hello” rather well, making this a 90s throwback we can live with.

I do like Emmelie’s unplugged version of her own “Drunk Tonight”, so I don’t hate the girl, just what she did with the anthem of a generation.

I never liked Nirvana, never been my thing … never been affected during my teen years with the grunge fashion or with the charisma of Kurt Cobain, never related myself to him both as a person nor as a musician … Nevertheless, when Tori Amos did her own piano cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit I surrendered to the darkness and meaningful vibe of the song probably because she did in a way that soundwise I was more… Read more »
