Rui Andrade — three-time participant of the Portuguese national selection Festival da Canção and the Tolmachevy Sisters’ backing singer in 2014 — recently took the stage on the popular Portuguese talk-show Você na TV and performed the two top musical moments of his career.
His first choice was “Ao Teu Encontro”, the song that gave him third place at Festival da Canção 2014 (which was won by Suzy with “Quero Ser Tua”). His second song was the Russian 2014 entry, “Shine”, giving us a better look at him than in Copenhagen where he briefly appeared before being hidden by the sisters’ giant sun.
Despite the weak ratings Portuguese broadcaster RTP has posted for Festival da Canção in recent years, Andrade said that the festival still has a huge impact at home, and everyone sees it. Regarding his Eurovision experience, Andrade said that he was treated by the Russians like he had never been treated in Portugal.
Andrade was not alone talking about his Festival da Canção and Eurovision memories. Also appearing on the show was Wanda Stuart (fourth place at Festival da Canção 2011), who talked about her experience and performed. Telmo Miranda, backing vocalist for Lúcia Moniz at Eurovision 1996 (Portugal’s best ever result in the contest), also took part in the discussion and performed two songs.
