On Monday Swiss-German broadcaster SRF opens the song submission period for Eurovision 2016. The submission period runs for four weeks, closing at 8am on Monday, 26 October. All the songs will be available on SRF’s website — and we’re wondering if a song from Lys Assia will be among them.

Eurovision’s first-ever winner from back in ’56 sent out this tweet earlier today, suggesting she may submit a song somewhere.

It wouldn’t be the first time she tried to get back in the game. Eurofans will remember her failed bid in 2012 with “C’était ma vie“, which made the Swiss final but lost out to Sinplus’ “Unbreakable”. In Baku she told us she wasn’t amused.

In 2013 her song  “All In Your Head” didn’t get past the submission round. We were really feeling that number, as we wrote at the time:

Lys Assia, the first-ever winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, has dropped a hot rap number with Bernese rap group New Jack. ‘All In Your Head’ has attitude and spunk, and it’s very now. Wiwi has a feeling that the combination of old meets young, wrinkles meet porcelain skin, could see New Jack featuring Lys Assia dropping it like it’s hot at Eurovision 2013. Have a listen, and read the lyrics here.

Do you want to see Lys give it another go? Will you vote for her song on the online platform regardless of whether you like it? Is it time for older singers to have a place at ESC? Let us know in the comments box below!

Yes!
Why not have another double winner of Eurovision, not only J.Lo!? She could get a very great record, with 5 Eurovision songs, and probably the biggest distance between two appearance on Eurovision.

Come on Switzerland! Send her to ESC, she earns points for you even if she does nothing on stage!

I say “no”. Lys should just enjoy the show.
I hope Arbresha submits another song for Switzerland. I thought Same Stars was one of the best songs this year. I still listen to it & love it.

I’d love to see her back. Swiss TV should just internally select her, then put all their efforts into getting the right song. Purely for the fun of it. What have they to lose? Nothing.

That would be a bit ridiculous…

1) ESC today is not the same contest as it was in 1956, there’s no way Lys would be successful again.
2) Even in 1956, the only reason she won was because the Swiss had to vote on behalf of the Luxembourg delegation. Since countries could vote for themselves at that time, they were able to give Lys the maximum amount of points both from Switzerland and Luxembourg, securing the win (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurovision_Song_Contest_1956#Voting_controversy)

Sure, I’d like to see her give ESC another go but please, don’t give her an EDM song and don’t give her a ballad. Give her something in between that will still get people interested in listening to her.

Why not… 🙂 I would like to see the legendary first winner ever of our Vision miss Lys Asia as Switzerland’s main participant again after 58 whole years in Sweden’s EuroVision <3 🙂
Lys had competed in EuroVision the first 3 years 1956, 1957 & 1958 🙂

A duet with a young newcomer would make it all the more interesting. Building bridges, indeed.

Lys Assia is the ‘Betty White’ of the ESC, even if her comic timing is usually unintentional. We gotta cut her some slack…after all, she’s the only active Eurovision legend from the Fifties who is still associated with the contest and she’s got this wonderful vitality about her despite numerous health scares in recent years. It would be very fitting for her to actually perform a song or a Eurovision medley on the 2016 edition and there’s no reason to deny her the right to try her luck in the competition itself if that’s what’s keeping her going and gives… Read more »

I think it’s time she gave up. Yes she’s the first ever Eurovision winner and that, but please no need to keep coming back and throwing her toys out of the pram when the Swiss don’t pick her. However, I think even if she went to Eurovision as a performer again, she’d save Swiss fortunes. They have got to be the dullest ESC nation in the 21st century.

“Quit while you’re ahead” comes to mind. Now it’s just getting sad.
Go home Lys, go home.

Yes she should come back, 2016, is the 60th anniversary of her win in 1956

Also all in your head, was much better than what they sent in 2013. Could have got them to the final!

Oh god, when I came on the website it just showed the picture of Lys Assia, and not the title and I honestly thought she died. Phew.

Anyway, meh, sure..at least she’s not dead.
