We’re bringing out one of the big guns this time for our Poland Wiwi Jury. Michal Szpak has long been on our wishlists to go to Eurovision. Thankfully, he’s entered Krajowe Eliminacje with his song, “Colour of Your Life“. Is it everything we’ve been hoping for? Find out in our reviews below — and remember, you can still vote in our Krajowe Eliminacje 2016 poll too, so that you can have your say on Michal and all of the competing entries.

Michal Szpak – “Colour of Your Life”

“Colour of Your Life” reviews

Robyn: There’s something comfortingly old-fashioned about Michal Szpak, how he effortlessly blends Queen’s epic ballad style from the 1970s with modern beats. It could work in Stockholm, but a song like this is so sincere and so dramatic that it needs 100% buy-in from the audience. If there’s anything that reads as cheesy, it’s a goner.

Score: 6.5/10

Luis: I fell in love with Michal’s style when he released “Jestes Bohaterem“, and hence I won’t accept him until he has something as good.  “Colour of Your Life” swaps vintage for dated and one minute after it starts, it becomes a snoozefest. Not to mention we have Margaret in the NF also. Not this year, Michal, but please, try again.

Score: 6/10

michal szpak 3Chris: This might be my definition of “underwhelmed”. I really like Michal’s voice, but the lyrics to “Colour of Your Life” sound incredibly cliché. Not only that, but if I’m going to read Bianca from the UK for her “demo track” backing, then I have to do the same for Michal. There’s just nothing that makes me want to see this at Eurovision.

Score: 5/10

Antranig: Lyrically, this song is a complete mess. There are good intentions in the lyrics, but they are poorly delivered. I absolutely love his vocals, however, and the musical arrangement is very clever. I can’t see this winning but Michal is a talented performer who should finish in the top three and come back next year with an amazing song.

Score: 7.5/10

Deban:
Oozing sex appeal from every pore, Michal Szpak is serving some serious fashion angles in his montage video. Unfortunately, this isn’t matched in his entry. “Colour of Your Life” sounds like a JESC entry performed by an ageing pop star. Although it is driven by a strong melody (thanks to a wickedly-clever arrangement), lyrically it is irrelevant. Furthermore, it is cheap, cheesy, and laughable at times — but in the same vein, I really like it.

Score: 7.5/10

David: He’s a talented vocalist and it’s a nice song. Nothing outstanding but nothing to criticize either. Unfortunately that doesn’t get you the win. With his talent and some work on this, it could be made into something memorable. So possibly…

Score: 8/10

Marek: Michal is a great artist with beautiful voice, and this time with a beautiful song. His “whoohs” makes the song even better, and thanks to his past in X Factor, I am sure he will be amazing. I’m crossing my fingers for him — or as we say in Poland, “keeping my thumbs” — because he’s from a town close to mine. After Conchita’s win, conservative Poles were making a lot of fun of Michal (yes, he was a victim without doing anything). They were posting a lot of memes and comments saying if we had sent Michal and transgender politician Anna Grodzka, then we would have won ESC for sure. That was really sad but I’m really glad he applied. Wish him luck.

Score: 8.5/10

Jason: I’ve been a fan of Michal Szpak for a long time. I love his voice, his energy and his musical style (and his hair). However, I fear that 2016 will not be his year for Eurovision. “Colour of Your Life” is a great song, but he faces stiff competition in the form of Margaret and Edyta Gorniak. Hopefully he won’t be disheartened by a likely third placing and will return in the future.

Score: 8.5/10

I know it’s 70s and old fashioned, but I really like it! Less the haircut, but I can ignore that although it comes with the song as a package I assume 😉

This is exactly the kind of song i love listening to and singing along with. The musical phrasing, the stucture, the hooks and the key changes (yes, there are two!) all make this the best musical entry from Poland. However, lyrically the song needs work – for example, I don’t understand the choice of black or white for someone’s life; can someone please explain that to me? Margaret undoubtedly has the best all-round Poland entry with “cool me down,” but if something goes wrong live then Michal may be the winner. His vocals are awesome. Kasia Mos and Edyta are… Read more »

The thing is, Michal Szpak sounds really amazing live. https://youtu.be/VNAv9H_gRb0
The song itself may be not enough, but his powerful voice makes it melodic and exciting. And thanks to the “whoooh” parts, it’s really catchy too, as you can probably hear in the video 🙂

The song is excellent but his accent is just way too heavy. I’d prefer he’d sing it in Polish. He should do well Saturday night.
