Last month, shortly after Russia revealed the sixteen audio files of the candidateswe ran a poll asking our readers to vote for their favourites. Liliya Verdiyan was the big winner, earning 55% of all votes, followed by Yuliya Asessorova and Alisa Khilko.

Full results of our readers poll

15. Milana Pavlova – 10 votes – 0.72%
16. Vilena Khikmatullina – 8 votes – 0.57%

As you can see, there was a big difference in opinion between our international readers and those who voted in Russia. Sofiya Fisenko, the winner of Russia’s online voting, only reached sixth in our poll. Liliya Verdiyan, our poll winner, only reached tenth place in the actual online voting. Yuliya Asessorova (fifth in the online voting, second in our reader’s poll) and Mariya Mirova (fourth in both polls) were the only contestants to do well with both audiences.

The final of the selection will take place on August 15 in Artek, Crimea.

The decision to host the event there has already provoked some controversy, owing to the ongoing conflict in Crimea and the the illegal annexation of the region by Russia.

The final results — and the winner — will be revealed on August 16 during the broadcast on Karusel.

The cause of the discrepancy of voting results is quite obvious. Sofia’s song has great lyrics and it has been praised by Russian speaking voters.

Maria Mirova should be first. That’s a very energetic song. Children won’t watch a show with 10 ballads.
