The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — continues to listen to and rank the 20 songs competing in Eesti Laul 2018. Next is Desiree with her song “On My Mind”. Was her song on our mind? Read on to find out!

Desiree – “On My Mind”

“On My Mind”

Antranig: Desiree does everything right on the surface. She’s got the look, she’s got a good song with plenty of contemporary elements and her vocals form a perfect marriage with the beat. My only criticism here is that I can’t help draw comparisons to Ellie Goulding’s “On My Mind” which has a very similar and repetitive chorus. Desiree is always going to come off second best in that comparison.

Score: 8/10

Barnabas: Songs like this are made daily. Not surprisingly, despite being contemporary, it’s still flat, with the songstress barely putting any vocal effort in it. And if those clichés have to be considered, the whole package just doesn’t take me anywhere.

Score: 3/10

Deban: “On My Mind” has been mixed and mastered with an over-sprinkling of digital flourishes. Although this would fare much better with a slightly stripped-back arrangement, it is still one of the standout tracks in this year’s Estonian pre-selection. Desiree’s voice was made for Spotify!

Score: 7.5/10

Luis: “On My Mind” rides the tropical trend yet it doesn’t fully embrace it, which makes it quite distinctive. The chorus is catchy and memorable, but the verses let it down a little bit. Particularly the second one, it disconnects you from the song for a while and makes it feel like background music. It’s a great effort, but it needs a bit more of dynamism.

Score: 6.5/10

Rick: As a studio track, this is a real contender to win. Contemporary, fresh, fun and well-produced. Desiree’s girly voice really fits the style and a lot of people could relate to it. The instrumental contains many digital voice effects, which makes it sound current. However, I doubt they can make this sound live as good as in the studio version. But for now, this belongs to the good songs in this year’s selection.

Score: 7.5/10

Robyn: “On My Mind” is poppy and sweet in all the best ways. It brings a refreshing wave of cool, modern pop, mixing edgy electronic sounds like Desiree’s sweet vocals. Unlike a lot of songs in Eesti Laul (and other national finals), “On My Mind” actually sounds current, like something out of a Spotify playlist.

Score: 8.5/10

That’s actually a very good song. Nice melody, fresh and up-beat and with a good singer. The chorus can be stuck in your head.

driving music. this is what all the songs currently on the radio sound like when you need to concentrate on something else. later on, won´t remember neither the title, singer nor whether it even played.

One musical idea repeated over and over again. The production is on point, but songs like this annoy me. Where is the development? She’s stuck with someone on her mind for three minutes – I get it. But this is a song CONTEST, not a radio station playlist. Please try harder. 5.5/10

The song is great current sounding and all….but the chorus is repeated too often. Wouldn’t mind it winning but Estonia definitely has more unique and better options

This is this year’s “Feel me now”. There is nothing wrong with it and it does sound current but there’s nothing exciting about. The vocalist doesn’t do anything wrong because she isn’t actually given anything difficult to do. Fine radio song but who would pick up the phone to vote for this as a strong song in a song competition?
