Christabelle mesc 2018

She’s the Maltese singer who has tried to represent her country at Eurovision on multiple occasions. And in 2018 Christabelle finally won the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Taboo” — an electro-dance number inspired by her fight with mental health issues. The “Taboo” lyrics are raw and inspiring, and convey both the despair that comes with depression and anxiety — but the hope and joy that comes when you share your struggle.

The song is co-written by Thomas G:son, notable for writing Eurovision hits such as “Euphoria” and “Gravity”. Against his sleek production, Christabelle sings about the need to break the stigma attached to mental health and needing to overcome the dark thoughts that surround many of us. The song has struck a chord with the Maltese public, so much so that she was appointed Special Ambassador for Mental Health for the President’s Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society.

Given that background, it’s clear she’s become more than a singer — she’s also an inspiration encouraging those who suffer for mental health to seek guidance and find strength.

She sings: “Let our guards down it’s time to break the taboo/ Before we all become animals, animals/ Echos in my head got to break the taboo/ No we will never be criminals, criminals/ But sticks and stones won’t break my soul/ Gotta be your own miracle, miracle/ It’s in my bones, got to break the taboo/ Before we all become animals, animals.”

Christabelle – “Taboo”

Taboo lyrics – Christabelle

In the silence you’ll find gold
When you feel warmth, I feel so cold
Can’t get no sleep, I’m up ’til dawn
These demons have broken my goal
And I know, and I know, and I know that you see my life
In foreign eyes
And I know, and I know, and I know that you hear my cry
Tears tell no lie

Let our guards down it’s time to break the taboo
Before we all become animals, animals
Echos in my head got to break the taboo
No we will never be criminals, criminals
But sticks and stones won’t break my soul
Gotta be your own miracle, miracle
It’s in my bones, got to break the taboo
Before we all become animals, animals

I know that I am not alone
Let all our thoughts and ghosts unfold
In the darkness I’ve found home
But what is next is still unknown
And I know, and I know, and I know that you hear my cry
Tears tell no lie

Let our guards down it’s time to break the taboo
Before we all become animals, animals
Echos in my head got to break the taboo
No we will never be criminals, criminals
But sticks and stones won’t break my soul
Gotta be your own miracle, miracle
It’s in my bones, got to break the taboo
Before we all become animals, animals

(Animals, animals) Break the taboo
(Animals, animals) Break the taboo
(Animals, animals) Break the taboo
(Animals, animals)

Let our guards down it’s time to break the taboo
Before we all become animals, animals
Echos in my head got to break the taboo
No we will never be criminals, criminals
But sticks and stones won’t break my soul
Gotta be your own miracle, miracle
It’s in my bones, got to break the taboo
Before we all become animals, animals

Well, it’s okay that they try to bring up a different topic, but the lyrics themselves are simply not very well written. Christabelle seems to be lovely and I think it’s great that she really tries to get her message across. She just needs a better lyricist. Every single line seems to have its own WTF moment: In the silence you’ll find gold –> Is this just a friendly way of telling us all to shut up? When you feel warmth, I feel so cold –> Oh, it’s the “women always have cold feet cliché” I guess… Can’t get no… Read more »

Beautiful. I can really relate to the lyrics “Can’t get no sleep, I’m up til dawn” right now, and “In the silence you’ll find gold”. Sometimes it’s in our darkest, loneliest, most sleepless seasons in life is when we really find ourselves, meaning, perspective, who we are, the things that matter and what we are living for. And although a dark period can hurt in the short term, it can be a blessing in disguise that opens our spiritual eyes and puts us on a more meaninglful path moving forward in this life and unto eternity. Beautiful.
