Last September, during his annual Eurovision Forum, RTÉ’s Head of Delegation made it clear that Ireland would be thrilled to host the Eurovision Song Contest.

And on Sunday the Irish Mail on Sunday reported that singer-songwriter Una Healy is the woman they broadcaster thinks can snatch the title and bring the contest back to Eire.

Speaking to insiders from the broadcaster, the paper claims the hunger for The Saturdays star is very real indeed.

“Una would be a great choice for Ireland’s Eurovision entry,” the unnamed source says. “She has an amazing voice and has years of experience performing in front of thousands of people so nerves wouldn’t be a problem for her.”

The source also nodded to her experience as a backing vocalist at Eurovision 2006.

“She has also been on that stage before with Brian Kennedy so knows exactly what to expect.

“We know from Nicky Byrne that a profile doesn’t guarantee a good result but she has honed her craft as a solo singer over the past two years and we feel that she would be the perfect choice.”

The source points out that “she’s a stunning-looking girl” and says that “it all depends on her schedule”.

RTÉ did not respond to queries from the Mail on Sunday.

Una from The Saturdays

What’s our favourite day of the week? Musically it has to be Saturday! Formed in 2007, The Saturdays went on hiatus in 2014. But their mark on the pop music world has been with us ever since we heard their debut single “If This Is Love”.

In fact, Irish wiwiblogger Padraig included them on his 2014 list of “The Acts UK Fans Actually Want to Send to Eurovision”. He noted that they’ve charted not just in Ireland and the UK, but also in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Hungary and Ukraine — nations that all participate in Eurovision.

Looking at the UK charts — which is a great bellwether for the impact an act can have — we see their five albums have all made waves.

Chasing Lights and Wordshaker both hit #9 on the UK Album Charts, while Headlines! peaked at #3, On Your Radar reached #23, and Living For The Weekend dropped in at #10.

Perhaps their biggest single is “What About Us”, which hit #1 in the UK and #6 at home. Other singles on the UK charts include:

“If This Is Love” (#8), “Up” (#5), “Issues” (#4), “Just Can’t Get Enough” (#2), “Work” (#22), “Forever Is Over” (#2), “Ego” (#9), “Missing You” (#3), “Higher” (#10), “Notorious” (#8), “All Fired Up” (#3), “My Heart Takes Over” (#15), “30 Days” (#7), “Gentlemen” (#14), and “Disco Love” (#5).

In 2017 she released her debut solo album The Waiting Game. It hit #12 in Ireland and #28 in the UK. But more importantly it showed Una’s ability to stand on her own. She shows great promise as the leading lady — and one who nods to Ireland’s singer-songwriter tradition while adding a dose of modernity. You’ll never see her cry…

OMG Yasssss this girl will slay! She got that country vibe mixed with modernity. I’m guessing Tel Aviv Eurovision is going to be one euro techno song contest considering it’s a party city and all so una would deffo stand out!
Plus she is stunning and is a really genuine person unlike some celebs, she’s still down to earth and hasn’t forgotten her roots!

No. Are you?

Her voice is serviceable, her solo releases so far have been dull.

Come on now… We are all part of the eurovision family please don’t resort to personal insults. By all means disagree with someone’s opinion but please try and respect it.

I have to agree with you in that her single releases have been rather underwhelming and to be honest they bombed in the UK charts. I don’t really know how she will add anything to the contest. Nice woman but a beige singer.

Why not? She would be a great choice. She has the experience, the voice and the charisma.
Give her the right song and she will do well.

I wish all the luck in the world for Ireland and Una, but please chose the song very wisely, hope she will not sound like a 90′ girl group, and also don’t spoil everything with a bad staging. Otherwise she will be the next Saara Alto, overhyped in the bubble, and then dropped like a hot potato by the former fanboys.

I think it could be interesting. It would be different from the style they have been sending regularly to Eurovision. And as AzeriChico pointed, the expectations will be higher for 2019, so it wouldn’t harm to pick someone with experience in big stages.

They had a nice entry last year and the result was pretty decent. So the expectations are rather high for next year. Let’s see what they’ll come up with.
