Latvia has chosen their winner of national final Supernova 2019. This year it will be the duo Carousel who won both the jury vote and televote with their country-folk song “That Night”.

Carousel previously won the second semi-final of Supernova and looked to be a strong contender coming into the grand final. While Carousel had been the jury favourite in the semi, the public favoured Markus Riva. However, this changed at the national final, with Carousel earning support from both groups.

Second place went to Supernova regular Markus Riva who gave a brilliant performance in the Supernova final of his song “You Make Me So Crazy”. The Final of Supernova was hosted by Dagmara Legante and Ketija Senberga in the Riga Film Studio venue.

A big surprise of the evening was Samanta Tīna finishing seventh. Going into the grand final, the “Cutting the Wire” singer had been a big favourite favourite.

Edgars Kreilis — who had topped the wiwibloggs readers poll — placed sixth with his entry “Cherry Absinthe”.

Latvia’s Supernova 2019 – grand final results

  1. Carousel – “That Night”
  2. Markus Riva – “You make me so crazy”
  3. Laime Pilnīga – “Awe”
  4. Double Faced Eels – “Fire”
  5. Dziļi Violets feat. Kozmens – “Tautasdziesma”
  6. Edgars Kreilis – “Cherry Absinthe”
  7. Samanta Tina – “Cutting the wire”
  8. Aivo Oskis – “Somebody’s got my lover”

The winner was decided by a combination of televoting and a jury made up of music experts DJ Rudd, Linda Leen, Artis Dvarionas and the head of Universal Music Group Baltic region, Petri Mannonen from Finland.

Wondering if they’re gonna pull a Common Linnets stunt and mesmerize us all with the staging. I mean it’s not a masterpiece like Calm After the Storm, but the guitar tabs are quite enjoyable. The Common Linnets kinda ruined it for every future entry in this genre lol. If you can’t match or top Calm After the Storm, you’re not going to make it.

Latvia had a weak national selection this year, so I wouldn’t be happy with any winner. I like the melody in “That night” and I like it’s calm. It soulds really beautiful. The problem I have is that it’s the same all the way until the end and it gets boring.

The song doesn’t really go anywhere and I don’t expect it to do well in Eurovision, but something about it just utterly mesmerizes and delights me! I think I’ll be listening to this for a while, long after Eurovision’s ended…

I don’t understand the Latvian Jury and televoters why they had chosen such a boring and dull song! Latvia will fail the final for the third time in a row. If they had chosen Markus or Edgars they would have done better in Tel Aviv-Jaffa.

I initially dismissed this song, but when I sit and pay attention, I actually think it’s really nice. It does need something introduced into the last minute to break up the repetition, and then it could do quite well. When we talk about quiet songs that surprise us with high scores – Common Linnets, Salvador, Ieva – those are solidly constructed, understated, but emotionally powerful songs that appeal to older adults – i.e., the kind of people who don’t read ESC websites and announce their opinions three months before the show. Always helpful to put Wiwi IMHOs into context. Especially… Read more »

This comment makes me so happy, I just want to say 🙂 As much as I enjoy the competition of Eurovision, a song’s place on the scoreboard doesn’t mean I lose the happiness I get from the song!

Nice singing and nice song… But the build-up to the chorus should be bigger in my opinion.

Slightly boring with the second part of the song going round and round. Revamp would help, but not much I am afraid.
Where are the uptempo songs this year guys?

Excellent work Latvia!

This will be a good feel-good quality time between Eurovision’s firework and multi-coloured costumes.? They may be just different with a chorus that is easy to remember.

And, I do like it. A lot.

Flat song, silly chorus, not the best voice, and it’s far too long. But I like the simplicity and the atmosphere of it. It’s warm, and gives the impression of intimacy.

This is a difficult one. I like to be positive, and the positive moment about this entry is that for the first 45-60 seconds, I am intrigued. However, after that, the harmony goes around in circles. And there are no changes in instrumentation, no structural developments, no memorable vocal moments… I really want to like this entry, but I’m really sorry that I don’t.

Oh right, thanks for clarifying. Latvia’s Supernova I dropped out of reviewing this year due to complicated real-life reasons. So I didn’t give every entry a full listen through anyhow. Montevizija, on the other hand, I wrote full-blown reviews for, and in the end they picked something I didn’t personally like at first. However, I then started playing around with “Heaven” on the piano, and I soon realised that it has a beautiful musical concept behind it that unfortunately hasn’t been fully produced and realised yet. There is a piano cover on YouTube already, and I like it better than… Read more »

If it helps, you didn’t miss that much. They killed off most of my favourites in the semi-finals. 😉
“Heaven” has a nice melody but that is just one part of it and they literally are not delivering on any other aspect of it. I just don’t have the faith that they can make something decent out of it in a matter of 2-3 months.

I agree with some of the comments here that it’s actually quite nice for 2 mins and then falls apart in the final third and becomes too repetitive. It’s a shame because I started to enjoy it about half way through and then I loose interest by the end

Imya

It’s enjoyable to listen to in the first 2 mins but then it runs out of ideas and just repeat the same words over and over again. The melody is nice, I like the vocalist. Well, it’s better than their 2018 entry I guess.

I’m very happy that Latvia picked Carousel. They had one of the weakest selections of the year, but managed to find something I actually enjoy a lot. It’s a decent song, performed by a charming vocalist and the whole thing is gorgeously filmed. Probably not showy enough to achieve big things in Eurovision, but one of the most respectable entries we have so far. Like Jo commented here, Latvia must now root for a very noisy second semifinal, which could make this entry stand out.

In my opinion this was the best of what they had. The most important flaw I see in this song is that it’s very repetitive by the end, with the chorus repeating itself a lot of time with little variation.
But can we appreciate the beautiful camerawork it had? I hope they keep it intimate in Tel-Aviv.

David F

Yeah, I agree it can seem a little repetitive by the end. I feel like this repetitiveness would be easily remedied with either a key change or a heightened emoting of the meaning in the song. If she keeps asking “where are you my love?” surely they’d be some sense of heightened emotion by the end, like where the hell are they, are they ok, my love I am waiting.

I like this, I don’t love it.

I wanted tonight’s performance to do more than the SF, to Dami it up, to have more charisma, to really engage with me, or at least each other, to convey the emotions of what is a rather sweet love song. Right now, I’d guess that Latvia has a borderline qualifier.

A random plus point is that the lead singer also really reminds me of Michelle Gomez as Madam Satan in Netflix’s Sabrina series.

It could be from any other country, no cultural essence as I enjoy in Eurovision. But I like it quite a lot, it’s the type of music I enjoy listening to in my everyday life. So good choice! In my top 3 so far together with Italy and Spain.

Okay I quite like this entry, it doesn’t progress in any way, but it was the only one ton ight with even the slightest chance of qualifying. This one will most likely drown in the strong SF2, but it may stand out and the juries in Denmark The Netherlands Austria Norway Germany Ireland the UK Austria Switzerland and Lithuania will probably vote for this. This has like a 20% chance of qualifying whilst all the other (bar Cherry Absinthe maybe) have a 0% chance of qualifying. Long story short: this was the best choice.

As expected. I would have preferred Edgar Kreilis, Double Faced Eels or Laime Piln?ga. “That Night” isn’t actually bad, but it is lacking something. The camera work really lift it up. If both Latvia and Slovenia make it to the final they will take points from each other. Though I think Slovenia’s one is stronger.

This is a very nice song. It’s nice to have a little bit of acoustic. I hear this was a weak selection, but I think the song that won is a good one. (For context, I don’t listen to the songs in NFs until a representative’s chosen so I can avoid having a bias toward or against the song chosen.)
