Poland return to the Junior Eurovision Song Contest with “I Just Need A Friend” by Maja Krzyżewska.

The country has been doing well of late in the Junior version of the contest. After wins in 2018 and 2019, and a silver medal in 2021, 13-year-old Maja will try to continue that successful tradition in Nice this year.

Poland in Junior Eurovision 2023: Maja Krzyżewska with “I Just Need A Friend”

Winner of Poland’s national selection Szanza na Sukces 2023, Maja powered through from her semi-final singing Adele’s “Set Fire To The Rain”. The performance thrilled the jury, which included Gromee (Eurovision 2018), Viki Gabor (winner of Junior Eurovision 2019) and Marek Sierocki.

In the super-final, Maja joined the other semi-final winner Leon Olek. The two finalists sang the song “I Just Need a Friend”, specifically written for Junior Eurovision 2023 in Polish and English. In the final, only the public got to decide the winner, and it was Maja who came out on top and became the successor of last year’s Polish JESC artist, Laura Bączkiewicz.

Maja is no stranger to singing competitions as she participated in the sixth edition of The Voice Kids Poland. She jokes about living “in the end of the world”, claiming that living in a small town like Szeszupka does not help her fulfill her dreams and develop her talent, which is why participating in talent shows are a big help for her.

What do the “I Just Need A Friend” lyrics mean?

We are all searching for our purpose in life. The thing that gets us out of bed in the morning. That purpose is much harder, more overwhelming, to find for someone from such a small town. It makes it hard to escape, to live, to dream.

“My place on Earth, I never had one
They told me that I would find my way
Small-town girl in an endless world”

Sometimes we just want to be heard, to be understood. Sometimes we don’t need much, sometimes we just need a friend.

“Will you listen to me
And make each of my days?
Someone just like you will be near me
Near me
I just need a friend”

But when we find that person, that friend, life just seems better. And if we get hurt, or become broken, it’s ok, we can get through it together.

“Together it’s easier to overcome
If we find each other I would be your someone too
Despite we have a lot of differences, more things match us today
I just need a friend
It’s great that I have you
It’s great that I have you
We’re beautiful like butterflies
Even if we break our wings”

“I Just Need A Friend” lyrics – Maja Krzyżewska (Poland JESC 2023)

Polish and English text

English translation

I just need a friend
Uhh…

My place on Earth, I never had one
They told me that I would find my way
Small-town girl in an endless world
(All alone)

Czy wysłuchasz mnie
Poukładasz każdy mój dzień?
Właśnie ktoś, jak ty, będzie obok
Będzie obok

I just need a friend
Uhh…
Tell me there’s someone who would fly me to the moon
Uhh…
And never let me go
We’re beautiful like butterflies
Even if we break our wings
Tak dobrze, że cię mam
Uhh…
Razem łatwiej iść pod wiatr

Dziś to co mam, to nadzieję
Że każdy z nas gdzieś znajdzie dom
Za dużo łez w wielkim świecie
Pośrodku my

Czy wysłuchasz mnie
Poukładasz każdy mój dzień?
Właśnie ktoś, jak ty
Będzie obok
Będzie obok

Tak dobrze, że cię mam
Uhh…
Razem łatwiej iść
Dokładnie tak jak ja
Uhh…
Masz niespokojne sny
Czy będziesz tu, gdy zgubię się
I poszukasz ze mną gwiazd?
Tak dobrze, że cię mam
Uhh…
budujemy nowy świat

If we find each other
I would be your someone too
Choć tak wiele nas różn to
Jednak więcej łączy dziś

I just need a friend
Tak dobrze, że cię mam
We’re beautiful like butterflies
Even if we break our wings
I juѕt need а friend
Uhh…
Are you the one for me?

I just need a friend
Uhh…

My place on Earth, I never had one
They told me that I would find my way
Small-town girl in an endless world
(All alone)

Will you listen to me
And make each of my days?
Someone just like you will be near me
Near me

I just need a friend
Uhh…
Tell me there’s someone who would fly me to the moon
Uhh…
And never let me go
We’re beautiful like butterflies
Even if we break our wings
It’s great that I have you
Uhh…
Together it’s easier to overcome

Today, I hope that
Each one of us will find home
There’s too many tears in the big world
And we’re in the middle of it

Will you listen to me
And make each of my days?
Someone just like you will be
Near me
Near me

It’s great that I have you
Uhh…
Together it’s easier to overcome
Just like me
Uhh…
You have uneasy dreams
Will you be here when I get lost
And search for the stars with me?
It’s great that I have you
Uhh…
Together it’s easier to overcome

If we find each other
I would be your someone too
Despite we have a lot of differences
More things match us today

I just need a friend
It’s great that I have you
We’re beautiful like butterflies
Even if we break our wings
I juѕt need а friend
Uhh…
Are you the one for me?

Amazing song, very touchy, beautiful melody and lyrics, strong vocals! I hope this time judges put Poland high in their ranking!

I unfortunately don’t really find this one too compelling. Maja’s vocal delivery at the Polish selection was rather shouty in an uncontrolled fashion (which makes sense for someone as young as she is) and the production of the final version on YouTube does almost nothing to compensate the simplistic chord progression and rather stale instrumentation. I doubt this one is going to hit home for me, and especially compared to other Polish entries we’ve seen in recent years, it’s not on the same caliber sadly. I still wish Maja good luck and a lot of fun in Nice, but it’s… Read more »

“My place on Earth, I never had one” sounds so s t u p i d, this is supposed to be a junior song and indeed, it doesn’t sound like a junior song. It’s not that bad tho. It could have some kind of “teachable” value lyric-wise. Good luck in Nice to Maja!
