Back in December Swedish broadcaster SVT revealed the contest’s branding and artwork. Inspired by the Northern Lights and a soundwave, the graphics seem to mix the Aurora Borealis with the rising bars you’d see on a sound equaliser. And today we finally got to see them in motion — and on the Eurovision 2024 stage.

During a special press event, SVT flipped the switch and gave the world its first look at how the graphics, the lights and the stage will work together this May inside Malmö Arena.

Watch the Eurovision 2024 stage in motion video

The design includes movable LED cubes along with LED floors — and the latest in light, video and stage technology. The stage rests in the middle of the audience and is shaped like a cross, “creating a unique 360-degree experience that the audience and viewers will get to experience in May,” according to the EBU.

Production designer Florian Wieder light designer Fredrik Stormby are behind the dreamy concept.

In an EBU statement, Florian Wieder said:

“I am so happy to be part of the Eurovision family again! Putting together an exceptional show is a team effort and I’m proud to be part of a dream team of professionals – just the right constellation of people to come up with something different and new. We all have the same vision of what this show should be and how to take Eurovision to the next level, and for me Sweden is always a guarantor of good music and entertainment.”

Fredrik added:

“We believe that together we have created what is an unexpected and updated concept for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 and are looking forward to showing it off for real! I am honoured to have been commissioned to design the light and video in collaboration with the team from our studio, and the production team that SVT has put into place for the project.

1988 was the game changer and will always be my favourite stage. I still look at it and can’t really tell where the back of the stage is – very clever!

I imagine Joost creating a huge mosh-pitt as all the audience is just all around him. Depends on the strict safety meassures in the Malmö Arena. What I can fully understand.
But still Perfect.

The dutch act will benefit form this cross-shaped staging.
He and his team are knowing to feed the crowd and getting their energy back.

This is like the stage from 2016, which is kinda disappointing, but what’s more important is that the stage is functional and the countries will have a chance to fully utilize it in a variety of ways.

When Sweden hosts, I’m always afraid of the new rules they are about to introduce.

Nevertheless, I’m never afraid of their stage. The always deliver!

Again and again the same designer. Is Florian Wieder the only person in Europe capable of designing a stage? That smells a bit like nepotism.

I was expecting something more than cubes going up and down. Vienna 2015 was just the best. Turin 2022 introduced some concepts never seen before. Waterfall. Pool. Plants. And there was a concept behind. Lisbon 2018 dared to do it without a ledwall. Here is the same Florian Wieder’s style. A big ledwall plus some fancy addons. This year are the raising/dropping cubes. It was presented as the cubes could move horizontally, too. That would have been groundbreaking. But they can actually only go up or down. Things already seen. A nice stage but nothing groundbreaking. Typical Florian Wieder footprint.

Didn‘t Florian Wieder also design Vienna‘s stage? Basically, a big ledwall plus some fancy addons…

Well, that was probably the best one. I didn’t remember he was the designer. The rest has been bland and monodimensional.

party vibes are important, but why do viewers at home need to see the audience holding flags all the time next to the performers? some of the artists are not used to this kind of staging (or any stage at all), and it might show. why challenge them so much? A small “conservative” stage is enough.

Looks very expensive but not particularly unique as big events go. It should work just fine. Though the surface area of the stage looks huge and it could be a challenge for some acts to adequately fill the space in a way that makes sense, especially those countries with small budgets.

Turin still beat out the disaster that was Tel Aviv – (NOT A POLITICAL STATEMENT!)- remember how everything that could be wrong did that year? Especially the amateurish, sloppy camera work that showed things that were supposed to be unseen- like the underside of equipment instead of the act singing a meter away. I will never forget that one in particular.

That’s because there was a broken missing camera registered in Cue Pilot. Unfortunately all the shots the ceiling rail camera had to do were wrong because it got stuck in a fixed position. They couldn’t edit in Cue Pilot all the hundreds of shots that camera had to do.

I agree. It seems a cheap design. More for a cheap talent show that a production like Eurovision. To be sincere, I preferred the set in 2016. At least the slanted/scattered ledwall gave some thrills that this set design doesn’t give. Another typical set design by Florian Wieder. A ledwall plus some other fancy props around. Everybody criticizing the broken sun, but at least the lady dared to put plants, a waterfall, a pool, something never seen before. Cubes going up and down. Wow! Shocking! 🙂

Italy failed because they are chaotic and they thrives in chaos. Also they tried to do something different, but EBU didn’t let them run out of time.

Rai and EBU were co-hosts. If Rai had been allowed to ACTUALLY host, away from the usual formula, things would have been different. I blame the EBU for being too controlling to the point of stifling creativity.

RAI failed, on some things, yes. One was that the sun was too slow to rotate for the 40 seconds required. But at least the set designer dared to do something different. And she introduced ideas never seem before. Like a real green green room with plants. A waterfall. A pool. There should have been water spills/arches that were prohibited by EBU due to risks to the equipments. I understand to those who survive only when there is a ledwall this is a cultural shock. In Lisbon 2018 there was no ledwall at all, we survived. Germany needed a ledwall.… Read more »
