AVROTROS — the state broadcaster in The Netherlands — says that its chances of participating in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 are small.

That’s the bad news coming out of Hilversum as Eurofans wait for final confirmation that the Dutchies are in — or out — following the disqualification of Joost Klein in Malmö.

The news emerged on Thursday, after Anouk’s management confirmed to RTL Boulevard that she is serious about submitting a song for Eurovision 2025.

The Netherlands at Eurovision 2025: Broadcaster says chances of participation are small

The tea started to flow last weekend at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam.

During her set, Anouk said that she had made the “perfect record” for Eurovision. RTL Boulevard approached Anouk’s manager Kees de Koning to see if the Eurovision 2013 singer was joking — and it turns out that Anouk does in fact have a song to submit.

However, as De Koning explained, there is one big problem. “There is no [Eurovision] committee anymore, so I don’t know who to send it to.”

The broadcaster has subsequently contacted Anouk to say they’re interested in hearing her submission. But only later. They are not in a position to consider it because of their ongoing issues with the European Broadcasting Union.

The Dutch broadcaster has been very clear that it expects certain cultural and structural changes within the EBU before it commits to returning to the contest that expelled its artist just a few months ago (and on the day of the grand final). As RTL News wrote:

“AVROTROS first wants to gain confidence that matters have improved before selecting a new entry. The broadcaster therefore considers the chance that the Netherlands will participate next year to be small.”

“AVROTROS will make a final decision about their participation in the song festival in September. If they decide to participate after all, they will know where to find Anouk.”

Anouk is widely considered the turning point for The Netherlands at Eurovision. Following eight straight non-qualifications, Anouk took the Dutch back to the grand final and to ninth place at Eurovision 2013 with her song “Birds.” She walked so that Ilse DeLange and Waylon could run to second place a year later.

Even so, insiders have told Wiwibloggs that the chances of Anouk being selected are slim because she’s become an increasingly controversial figure. In February, she uploaded a transphobic Instagram post and caption.

NikkieTutorials, trans icon and co-host of Eurovision 2021, clapped back, writing: “Having one of the Netherlands’ most down to earth, respected musicians be a shameless terf [trans exclusionary radical feminist] and transphobe was not on my bingo card for 2024.”

i love the EBU, and Daddy Martin Osterdahl, i am sure they will deliver a epic cheesefest easter egg filled contest next year, so hopefully it will be in geneva if they are smart to live up to the one ingredient what also makes eurovision eurovision, cheesiness

i am watching the contest, regardless of the depressing turds of avrotros what they’ll decide to, if they want to keep defending the women hater Joost, EBU dq’ing Joost was justified, if you break the rules you need to be punished

and Israel are victims so of course we should protect them

There is still a chance that all this can be worked out. Avrotros asked for an independent investigation into 2024, and as far as I know this has been set in motion with the EBU. Until the investigation is concluded, any “news” on this topic is just gossip and speculation. Avrotros also asked for cultural and structural changes within the EBU to take place, which can honestly be interpreted as: “Do something different.”

well lesser swedish involvement within the EBU maybe, also bring back the own language rule in some form, maybe similar to junior eurovision, 70% native language 30% another language, or remove pre-recorded backing vocals, more live backing vocals and more live singing rather than relying on pre-recorded vocals more privacy in rehearsals, no media at all rehearsals, just in the mediacentre to be able see multiple staging photos, 10 second snippet like everyone else more security for delegations, so none of them can provoke each other like what the israeli delegation were doing this year and if we participate, i… Read more »

we live in a free world or i used to think we weren’t north korea or russia, i am entitled of my own opinion, and our artists are entitled of their own freedoms, if Joost had said he didn’t want to be filmed then the EBU should listen to that and act accordingly, Israeli delegation should’ve been sanctioned 😉 for also provoking against other countries

But for the Dutch Junior Eurovision pre-selection, AVROTROS should not limit songwriting credits to adults. One or more participant may not like the song he or she is assigned, and the EBU should limit adults’ involvement in songwriting to a maximum of 50%.

I hate to admit it, but a part of me really hopes they will withdraw. After what happened this year, I feel like still coming back next year just gives off the message that the EBU can mess things up to the nth degree and everyone will just politely turn up next year anyway. It gives the EBU less incentive to make substantial changes.

The more people want the Netherlands to drop out, the more the EBU will persuade the tulip country’s broadcaster to continue participating. The more people say 2024 is the final year for the Eurovision Song Contest, the more they have to deal with the fact that the 2025 edition is on the EBU’s schedule.

Should Anouk represent the Netherlands at Eurovision 2025, you’ll have to deal with.
