On 7 March Denmark will choose its Eurovision 2020 representative via Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2020. This year is extra significant as the show is also celebrating its 50th anniversary.
To mark the occasion, all performing acts will be supported by a live orchestra.
Orchestra at Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2020
The widely-known Antonelli Orchestra will take care of the ten potential Danish Eurovision entries. The orchestra previously appeared on Danish television in programmes such as Vild med dans and Toppen af poppen.
It’s the first time since 1999 that an orchestra will be used in the Danish preselection. DMGP spokesperson Gustav Lützhøft said:
“Dansk Melodi Grand Prix is a party of the people that brings together the nation for Danish music and songwriting. We are leveling up the music this year, and with a live orchestra in the back, all artists will have the perfect outlet to give all Danes a great music experience – both those who come to the Royal Arena and everyone who watches at home in the living rooms.”
“From nowhere else than Dansk Melodi Grand Prix comes so much new, varied and unique music at the same time, and we are proud to be able to present it 100 percent live.”
Denmark won’t be the first Nordic country to bring the orchestra back for its national final since the turn of the century. Norway’s NRK did likewise for the fiftieth anniversary of Melodi Grand Prix in 2015.
What do we know about Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2020?
For the 50th edition, the final show will return to Copenhagen for the first time since 2008. It will be hosted by actress Hella Joof and actor Rasmus Bjerg.
As per previous years, a total of ten acts will compete in the grand final. But unlike before, when all ten acts were selected by DR, the broadcaster will only choose seven for 2020.
The remaining three competing acts will be picked by the Danish public via DR’s P4 radio network. Of the submitted entries, DR representatives will select nine songs to face the public vote.
In the time leading up to the vote, the radio network will focus on songwriting and DMGP themes and will play the nine songs, alongside the seven prequalified songs. Listeners will have the opportunity to vote for their favourites of nine songs facing the public vote, with the top three getting a place in the DMGP grand final on 7 March.

This is so great! Now this is going to be a NF that I am going to look forward to! I just hope that the song will be up to the challange.
Not always. Sanremo stopped using the orchestra for a time in the 80s, but they brought it back.
How can norway have it’s fiftieth anniversary in 2015 ?
It’s the 60th year in 2020
in the 1970s we decided we just were too cool for eurovision so we didn’t participate for a good 11 years lol
They also need to introduce a new set for DMGP, its literally the same since 2016.
I know
Though I agree, the danish broadcaster did almost go bankrupt in 2014 after hosting Eurovision. Now I’m sure they will have somewhat recovered by now…. but I can understand why they cut the costs on the stage since it fits the theme of the contest well.
it doesnt take too much money to put a set together. Its not the money i think, its lack of imagination.
Yaaas!
P.S. I am available for conducting, if required. 🙂
Just like it show be at Eurovision!
I hope Simone comeback. She participated 3 times in DMGP 2010,2013,2016 (all 3 times 3rd place, and She was favorite to win in 2013,2016)
Heart shaped hole is amazing! I agree.
Same did NRK in MGP 2015 for their celebration of first appereance 1960, winning 1985,1995
I’ll be looking forward to watch the show, IF they don’t forget to also reintroduce good song material.
Lol
Starlight , Anna ritsmar 2018 was good imo
