He’s one of the world’s best-selling artists and his shelf is lined with Grammy Awards, including for Song of the Year in 2016 for “Thinking Out Loud”. And it’s now confirmed that Ed Sheeran is a huge Eurovision.

Speaking to Dutch broadcaster Humberto Tan on Friday, the “Shape of You” hitmaker said: “Eurovision is my favourite thing to watch every year. I love it.”

So would he ever think about competing himself?

“I get pissed when I watch it every year and I text my manager being like, ‘I’m gonna do this one day’ and he was just like, Not on my watch.'”

“I think if I’m gonna do it, it would have to be…England has to be loved by Europe again and I don’t know if that’s gonna happen.”

Ed Sheeran would do Eurovision if the UK “is loved by Europe again”

Yes, Ed Sheeran has made his contribution to the irritating and patently false notion that the UK’s failures at Eurovision reflect a European dislike of the United Kingdom. This, of course, flies in the face of the fact that British artists — from Dua Lipa to Little Mix to Ed himself — have made a packet topping the charts across, um, Europe.

Humberto rightly challenges him on this point, saying, “We do love England. But we love Ed Sheeran more.”

Ed then dives deeper into the “they hate us” theory”: “Mate, every year England comes last. Every year. Without fail.”

This is, of course, not true either. First of all, England doesn’t compete — the UK does. And second, in the past 20 editions of Eurovision, the UK has finished last five times. It also notched up a third place (2002) and fifth place (2009) finish along the way.

Ed Sheeran loved Måneskin, Jendrik and Daði Freyr

But anyway: who were his favourites?

“Mate, Germany’s entry I loved this year,” he said. “I don’t feel hate, I just feel sorry. Hit. Smash.”

He struggled to remember the Dutch entry, saying, “Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,” before moving on to the winners Måneskin and Iceland’s Daði.

“I think Italy had the best song and performance of the night, but I loved Iceland as well. I think the Italians were — it was very, very good.”

As a Welshman, this annoys me so much to read that Ed thinks that England compete in Eurovision.
But reading between the lines, the United Kingdom is no longer united.

As a true music fan, I can only pray that him and the likes of the Scottish shouter ( Lewis ), do not consider doing Eurovision. Along with what is the meaning of life, there is another question which I cannot get my head round……how on earth are these people so successful. There’s buskers near where I live who are genuinely better singers and musicians. People like ES and LC were once so common back in the day. They are so lucky that they are releasing music now, because they would be swamped with good music. What I am trying… Read more »

From where I stand, I think the problem isn’t Europe loving or hating England or the UK, the problem is BBC’s apparent inability to get out of the comfort zone. For the past few years they have sent in perfectly decent, but wholly generic and unmemorable, entries to a contest that tends to reward memorability, outside-the-box thinking and overall standing out from the crowd. The UK’s Eurovision delegation needs to get the memo soon if they want to have the slightest chance of turning their fortunes around.

I think the England/UK mix up is telling for why the UK fails. They never represent more traditional sounds of the british isles in favor of very generic sounds. Even when they have sent singers from outside of England, they didnt give them songs with a regional sound. The UK refuses to take that kind of risk but like, give us bagpipes or traditional welsh song structures (eg “deck the halls”), let people sing in their actual accents. Just something that stands out. But the UK has this whole thing there there are two kinds of british person: english and… Read more »

Ed definitely over exagerated the situation. I mean, yes the Jury point distribution is always a politically motivated thing (to some degree at least) but with the public votes a good song will usually make it through and even win. And its true we’ve come last 5 times in the last 20 years but this year is only our second nil points in the history of Eurovision, Germany has had 4. And the reason in recent years that our songs havn’t been great, because lets face it thats the reason, is simply due to the BBC using a record label… Read more »

When t.A.T.u. slayed the charts in 2002 with All the things she said, they were chosen to represent Russia in ESC 2003 and ranked third after one of the closest votations ever.

If fresh international fame worked for t.A.T.u., why wouldn’t it work for Ed Sheeran? He wins, he has a single at least as successful as the ones from his album ÷. He loses, whoever defeats him is remember as “the artist who defeated Ed Sheeran” and becomes big.

I think he should send a song if he likes the contest. How is he a knob? The views he expressed are the same as almost every person I know from the South-East of the UK has. We just assume that UK do badly in Eurovision since Brexit because Europe hate us for that and for asking for special treatment from the EU etc. It was quite noticeable that ever since the Brexit vote, we started doing even worse than usual. Well can Ed Sheeran proudly say that Uk has better songs than rest? They are basic. They should send a good song instead of eurovision song.
Also staging lacks a bit. 2017 was a step up.
At least they are un the final. Latvia hasn’t qualified since 2016. Should we also say that we don’t qualify just because everyone hates us? 😀 no

Some in the comments trying to make it only England.

Holland allowed 15,000 danish fans to watch Denmark vs Wales, but no Welsh fans, despite Wales as part of UK having offered 1st dose of vaccine to every adult now. The Welsh team also had to endure a match against Italy in Rome and a match against Turkey in Baku. Meaning everywhere they went the crowd was against them.

Also despite her best attempts, no European leader has thrown their arms around Nicola Sturgeon and Scotland. Far too important to protect Spain (Catelonia) instead.

Danish fans were allowed to enter the Netherlands if they stay in the country for less than 12 hours as part of an exemption to the entry rules for EU and Schengen area residents.

The exception does not apply to Wales fans since they’re from the UK that isn’t part of EU anymore because of brexit.

I’m only stating facts here, there are rules within the members of the EU and since United Kingdom isn’t part of it anymore different rules apply to them.

I haven’t even said a word that UK should rejoin EU, there’s no stick to beat you with since you’re the one beating yourself here by taking a simple fact and forcing a statement that the EU members are once again being against you. Pity party.

Yes!! I love the Brits who voted for Brexit still want to have the same rights as the EU citizens—keep all the good, drop all the pesky stuff. That’s not how things work. One of the biggest gripes is many didn’t want Europeans to move freely into your country (completely valid) so now you can’t make a stink you can’t move freely within the EU.

I can imagine well-known British artists shying away from ESC because of the UK’s bad track record, but you’ve seen Jade Ewen reach the top 5 in 2009, right? The problem with the UK in Eurovision is that their songs never manage to leave a lasting impression, which is key to getting lots of support from juries and televote alike. Currently both the UK’s songs are quite basic, and with staging they haven’t really done a lot of spectacular things either. The closest thing to that was Lucie Jones in 2017, but even then, the song was still very basic.… Read more »

When we ask a world music pop star capable of selling millions of records and hitting #1 spot on the UK or US charts … about Eurovision. When one is seeking desperately for validation from the outside world of music, it sounds, at times, just pathetic. The fact that the UK comes bottom last or always on the left side of the scoreboard makes no difference to a country who will always mock as much as it has always mocked the contest, because the UK has always downplayed Europe for decades … It is what it is … so let’s… Read more »

I’ve never understood why british people don’t see themselves as europeans, is this self-hatred just a way to get an excuse for bad results rather than admitting that none of the entries were hits even for them?

As for Ed Sheeran, he does sell quite well around Europe, so I don’t understand why he thinks british people are being hated. It’s the previous songs that have been meh, nothing to do with them as people.

I wouldn’t say any of the songs were bad qualitywise, most of those songs are well made but just lacked that something that makes it special. Staging is somethimg that UK seems to make memorable always, but lyrics are sometimes just bland and boring and in some cases the production leaves the songs generic.

Scotland and Wales need to respectively start representing themselves at Eurovision, just like they do in sporting events. England has such a nasty attitude towards anything ‘European’, and it reflects at Eurovision. Whereas, Scotland and Wales would have a clean slate to start from. This would also mean countries in the Celtic Isles would have their own voting bloc, which they have never had before – putting them at an advantage just like the Balkan and Eastern countries.

The worst part is that they just have to open their eyes (and their ears). Good artists, there are some in their music festivals, their concert halls, there isn’t a village in the UK that doesn’t have singers or music bands. Let the people in charge of the selection ask their teens which singers they follow on social networks and online video sites, and they will have a pre-list of names as long as an arm. Go look for your talents at the source instead of waiting for a good contestant to fall to you by chance from the sky.… Read more »

I’m going to defend Ed Sheeran a bit here. While Eurovision isn’t political, a lot of British musicians are, and the names that people point out as possible ESC representatives, Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa etc tend to oppose the current conservative government in the UK. They might feel that representing the UK whilst it’s being led by Boris Johnson is an endorsement of the government. Obviously this isn’t supposed to be the case, but when politicians complain about Eurovision this is the inevitable result. Also Sheeran really doesn’t need Eurovision. When the UK got their first nul point result in 2003, they blamed the Iraq war for it, even though it was really badly performed. Brexit is just the latest political scapegoat that is used to whine about their bad results and not actually do something to rectify the problem.

This is the problem with sending English people to Eurovision. They forget that they are representing the entirety of the U.K. NOT JUST ENGLAND! That is why we need to set up a Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish entry.

That’s why I have a problem with ‘Europe need to show England love’.

Tbh I think that even if they don’t get to participate separately, sending a song in a national language (Welsh, Scots, etc.) would benefit the UK. I mean, even if the song isn’t the best, people (and eurofans especially) would appreciate them for choosing something different and risky. And hey, they’ve already come last with no points, so they could only do better 🙂

When will British people stop with this delusions about not winning because of Brexit and alleged hate towards UK? The ONLY reason why they don’t get votes is that they send crappy songs.

For UK it´s not enough to send average entries (like this year) or something even worse (like in 2019)

ah god, here comes another British complaining about not being loved by Europe just like they were used to decades ago. They think they are the epicentre of everything and Europe should bow down to them. Ridiculous. Israel has been one of the most hated countries in the world, yet managed to score more points in Eurovision this year than the UK + they won in 2018. So, the UK can win and they can also do well IF they take it seriously and send a unique act that is memorable and not mediocre songs and acts that are forgettable.… Read more »

…. or because the UK sends generic/forgettable songs year by year. I call this “People hate UK because of Brexit” for bullsh*t. BBC ain’t trying at all. Almost 8m viewers in UK tuned in the Eurovision finale and its the BBC’s largest viewing share since 2014.

Stop this «they hate us»-nonsense. UK does badly at Eurovision because they send bad songs to the contest.

In Germany it already sounded similar… Years ago some “special fans” blamed all to Angela Merkel for well-deserved flops…
Very interesting to see them going astray from reality. Help !

2010 – 2012 Germany bails everyone out, 3x top 10 places and a win.
2013 Germany sends biggest star they have Cascada, with a style of song doing very well at the time….

Germany asks for it’s money back, = really low placing

Cascada was quite cheap and nothing for the stage at ESC…In the following years with the exception of 2018 all the songs was very forgettable and lost opportunities….

That the manager of Ed Sheeran stops him from doing eurovision I can understand since he’s already dominating the music market without it. But Måneskin is now a global phenomenon reaching #3 in the spotify top 50 chart up to this day. Eurovision made their global break through happen and if I was the manager of a semi famous artist I would be the first to tell them to do it.

I kinda get him because Ed Sheeran does not need to participate in a contest (in general, not just Eurovision) but especially with Eurovision when you know the perception of the public.

I’d prefer an unknown or semi famous UK singer to go over Ed Sheeran honestly.

The songs of UK are not bad, let’s just say, they have nothing special when it comes to all the diversity that leads many countries to Eurovision, for example, ethnic ones. Does even England have its own ethnic sound? Scotland have, yes. But even if its the song like “Arcade” let say “tipical” but very beautiful, deep and personal, it can works too. Maybe if UK wants to take it more seriously at least make national selection, it could works!!
And by the way Embers was my favorite entry from Uk ever….

it’s not about the selection process… it’s about the approach… internal selection can also work you just need a good artist…

national final clearly wasn’t working for them.

Let’s first find one really good song for the Uk before we do a national selection i’d say. That rhymes! 😀
