After a week of mourning the absence of the Riga Beaver, we were ready to face Latvia’s Supernova 2018 once again.

In tonight’s second semi-final, seven more acts faced the jury and public vote. With two automatic spots in the final available, it was always going to be a tough contest. In the end, MADARA and Ritvars qualify to the February 24 final.

Supernova 2018 — Qualifiers

MADARA — “Esamiba”

Ritvars — “Who’s Counting?”

MADARA’s success is no surprise given the results from our readers poll, or the Wiwi Jury. The cellist won our Jury convincingly, whilst she finished second in our poll.

It’s bad news for fans of Markus Riva, though. Although Markus won our readers poll, he does not make it through to the final. Will he return for a fifth time next year – or take the wildcard?

As always, results were decided by a 50/50 split of audience votes and the jury. The audience votes were made up of televotes, online voting and Spotify streams.

SUPERNOVA 2018 — SECOND SEMI-FINAL RUNNING ORDER

  • Hypnotic — “Pray”
  • MADARA — “Esamiba”
  • Markus Riva — “This Time”
  • In My Head — “Sunset”
  • Ritvars — “Who’s Counting”
  • Monta — “1000 Roses”
  • Riga Reggae — “Stop the War U2″

Tonight’s qualifiers join Edgars Kreilis and Liene Greifane in the final. Next week will see two more acts qualify, before the jury put through a wildcard from the remaining semi-finalists.

What do you think of tonight’s Supernova 2018 results? Do you think MADARA and Ritvars deserved to qualify? Let us know all your thoughts in the comments section below.

1. Russia never votes for Latvia anyways. Like we’d care.
2. Russia isn’t giving points for 20-30 songs this year. All of them can’t end up last.
3. You narrowminded

I wanted Ritvars and Markus to qualify so am quite happy. Next week is the hardest semi final to call. Should be good!

Congrats Madara and Latvia! Excellent choice!

Madara’s song is not just ‘something different’, it’s something that I listen on Spotify.

Someone with an uptempo song is going to win Eurovision this year with all the boring songs that are being chosen in so many countries to try and be edgy.

It’s interesting how Baltics decided to go classical this year with “La Forza” being favourite in Estonia and “Esamiba” in Latvia. Does Lithuania have something like that by any chance? In any event pleased for both of them qualifying today and looking forward seeing them in the finals.

Personally, I expexted Madara and Markus qualify. Ritvars was unexpected. Great job for Madara! “Esamiba” well performed! I really like it though it’s not the most amazing song I’ve heard.

Congratulations to MADARA and Ritvars! Good, quality music won in this semi.

Markus will most likely be the wildcard qualifier. I highly doubt the juries would overlook his hard work and large social following in addition to being 2nd overall in the number of Spotify plays. Either way it seems that, hands down, MADARA will be the Supernova 2018 winner and the Latvian entry for Lisbon. A fitting representative for a country celebrating its 100th birthday this year. ?

Markus won’t get the Wildcard. He’s so hated by the juries and Latvians (only ruskies loves this guy), that he will never achieve this goal. Most likely Agnese will get the Wildcard

yeah Sudden Lights should (and hopefully will) get the wildcard

Sudden Lights has more streams than Markus. They were #1 on the weekly digipop chart.

LTV Supernova Facebook page was doing streaming online, so login there and somewhere around 25minute should be her performance. Hope it helps. 🙂

Thank you Krista, it worked. 🙂 I didn’t even had to login, so those who don’t have Facebook can watch it there also. The sound is a little bit out of sync, but it’s better than nothing!

Now Russians are so mad, they’re commenting in Latvian media, that this is fraudulent, Latvia will place last with Madara and Markus was the actual winner.

These comments always make me smile. 🙂

Markus Rivus Spampolius got just defeated in the battle of Rigae by queen Madara!

I can only say: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I’m surprised by Ritvar’s qualification, I thought Markus or Riga Reggae would make it.
About Madara, well she’s the clear winner of Supernova. There are few things to improve on her performance, but it was by far the best.

I am not a fan of either of the two songs, but this was the best possible outcome of an extremely bad heat.
