Pocahontas is back, y’all, and she speaks Dutch! OK, not really. But if you watched the Dutch Eurovision final you might think so. That’s because voters in the Netherlands have selected Joan Franka—a folk artist who dressed up as a Native American with a guitar and plenty of feathers during the final. Birds died during this performance, y’all!

Her song “You and Me” is pretty darn respectable. It’s mellow but uplifting, light-hearted but deep. It’s the kind of music I’d play in the background if I were having sex on a blanket outside on a sunny day. I’ve got a strange feeling that this song might just have what it takes to get Holland back to the finals of Eurovision! What do y’all think?

@Cindy, agreed!

@Jens, just because idiots do the same on Halloween doesn’t make it OK.

This great blog from a Native woman in the USA covers the issue in more detail: http://nativeappropriations.blogspot.com.au/2011/10/open-letter-to-pocahotties-and-indian.html

I’ve lived in the States for quite a while, seen enough during Halloween. You’re argument is invalid.

Do North American children no longer play at being “Cowboys and Indians” any more? They certainly do here on the continent.

And that’s exactly what Joan is singing about, her childhood…

I was five
You were three
We were dancing in the street
(…)
In the morning I would wake
and my heart just couldn’t wait
To play in your backyard.

The reason why she looks like an indian is because she always played hat she was an indian back when she was young with her little lover.
So no hate on her.
she truly is a sweetgirl and the song is really good!
Its catchy and different than others like al those stupid ballads every year with those pretty girls.
I sadly think she wont make it to the finals because the netherlands dont have much neighbor countrys who will vote for them.
If it will go fair then she will go to the finals.

The staging of this performance really irks me. It seems like the consensus from most of Europe is that it’s simply distracting, but – as a North American – seeing someone dressed in “generic Indian costume” (or, as it’s been dubbed by some people, the “hipster headdress”) is really offensive, viscerally. Almost as offensive as someone in blackface. It’s thoughtless and tasteless cultural appropriation. I do hope they change things up before the final; Eurovision has a sizable international audience outside of the participant countries, and this does the Netherlands’ image no favours.
