As all of you Eurovision 2014 enthusiasts will remember, Portugal’s Rui Andrade is all about crossing borders. In Copenhagen this year the Portuguese heartthrob and X Factor contender provided backing vocals for Russia’s Tolmachevy Sisters (he also closed the gigantic paper sun at the climax of the song). Last month we had the pleasure of watching Rui sing at the Eurovision Live Concert in Setubal. (We also grabbed him afterwards for a little selfie action). His cover of “Shine” was one of the highlights of the night for us, and we’re delighted to share it with you below, along with an encore presentation of our interview with him from the Eurovision red carpet in Copenhagen.
Wow that was brilliant. I have to admit, I thought it was going to be wierd to have a guy sing this; some parts of it seemed more like a girl song, but Rui reinterpreted it masterfully.
On the last chorus, I like the Tolmachevy Sisters’ singing more, but I liked Rui’s verses more.
Charles, you’ve said this several times and I must interject: he sings in a greater range than one octave. This song is one example of that. Sure, he doesn’t go too much higher than middle C or too much lower than the C below it, but strictly speaking, the notes he is singing lie in more than one octave. And he is hitting them (for the most part). As for him not trying to hit high notes, perhaps that’s a good thing. Just look at Alvaro Estrella in the Swedish national final for instance… what a disaster! Part of musicianship… Read more »
He’s good looking but wear wayyy too much make up. Tone it down !
I think that Rui does not like girls. If you understand me 🙁
$100 says he’s hung like a horse…
* with a better song
To be honest… he’s fucking hot!
Probably he will represent Portugal in a few years a better song. Is not difficult with their national finals… (low level).
Best result for Portugal since 1996 … 😀
This song is really bad not understand it will be in ESC and Rui Andrade ‘karaoke version’ is very crap! A shame
@Charles – Completely agree with you. I’m sorry but he sounds like he’s singing karaoke. How did this song end up in the 7th place is beyond me.
Opinions should never be presented as facts. Nor should they be disrespectful or insulting to the artists.
Rui Andrade with his “one-octave” voice is the new ESC-gay-everybodys-fetish … okey … since there is no musical substance to wow anybody, he’s compensating in other ways … Enjoy them then! From Eurovision to The X Factor in Portugal … what an accomplishment!
When I looked at the picture, at first I thought it was Rylan Clark…
