We’ll forgive y’all if you struggle to remember Iris. Aged just 17, she represented Belgium at Eurovision 2012 with “Would You?”, an anodyne tune that was met by a collective yawn from Europe. Needless to say, it failed to qualify, with only Austria’s Trackshittaz saving it from last place. Post-Baku, she acquired an “A” and released a handful of follow up singles, all in a similar vein to her ill-fated entry. She quickly slipped off our radar… until now!
On “Heartbreaker”, Airis transforms into a mini dance diva and we heartily approve! The guitars and pianos have been thrown out in favour of drum and bass. She no longer sounds like a lost throwback from the early ’00s, this new Airis is 2015 through and through. And it’s not just her sound that’s progressed. Thematically, she’s grown up too. Gone is the needy little miss who wondered if her ex would pine for her. Now, she has no issue telling her significant other that he’ll be out on his own if he dares break her heart. As she coolly coos over the throbbing beats, we don’t doubt her.

The image overhaul extends into the music video. There are no coy smiles or blushing glances. Airis is fierce. Whether she’s bathing in steam beneath floating cubes or striding purposefully across a sandbank, the intensity doesn’t abate.
“Heartbreaker” is great, but we don’t want to oversell the transformation. This isn’t a Anna Bergendahl “For You” style revamp (because that was simply sublime), some small kinks still remain. Nonetheless, Kate Ryan might want to get a tighter grip on her Belgian Eurovision dance crown, because it looks and sounds like Airis could just snatch it off her head.
