After qualifying for the grand final for first time in seven years and achieving sixth place at Eurovision 2015, LTV might have found the recipe for Eurovision success — and it’s called Supernova. The first auditions to select the twenty artists for Supernova 2016 were held this week and some of the country’s biggest names got in on the act.

Supernova 2016 artists

According to Latvian news site delfi.lv, 88 performers auditioned. Among these were this year’s runner-up Markus Riva and Samanta Tina, who came second in Dziesma 2013. Other familiar names include Sabine Berezina, Martinš Ruskis, Nikolajs Puzikovs and Liene Greifane (aka Liene Candy).

The jury for the first auditions consists of four music professionals: Latvia’s 2009 representative Intars Busulis, music publisher Guntars Racs, singer Daumants Kalninš and producer DJ Rudd. The twenty acts who qualify to the liveshows will be decided on December 10, but will be revealed to the public on the first Supernova shows on January 17 and 24.

The twenty songs for the chosen artists will be chosen from 120 compositions submitted by songwriters all over the world. The final of Supernova 2016 will take place on February 28.

In 2014, Latvia were my least favourite and in 2015, they were my absolute favourite. So I definately think that Supernova is Latvia’s Eurovision success and I am looking forward to it most.

oh man this was the greatest national selection last year
so much class
anyways glad to see some decent artists applying this year btw although I’ll never really be able to support Markus Riva thanks to his song nearly beating Aminata to the ESC

I wouldn’t mind Markus Riva winning. He has a fanbase in some parts of Eastern Europe and we all know how that’ll happen in the contest.

I hope Markus will get a song like “Take Me Down” and not a song like “Lights On”.
It’s also great to see Samanta coming back, i hope her song will be epic like “Stay”
