Ahead of the third and final heat of Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2016, Finland’s Eurovision 2016 selection, the Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — listened to and reviewed all six of the competing songs. Today we turn to the Gušani Brothers with “Poom Poom”. Did it make our hearts go “poom” as they promise in the song? Read on to find out…

Gušani Brothers – “Poom Poom”

“Poom Poom” reviews

William: This is perhaps the trashiest and most down-market song in the Finnish selection — and I absolutely love it! The Gusani boys take a simple theme — their hearts go poom-poom for some girl, and that makes their bodies want to do the same. The chorus is catchy, easy-to remember and difficult to dislodge once it gets stuck in your head. Should it go to Eurovision? No way. Am I happy to play this while I’m dying on the treadmill? Absolutely!

Score: 7/10

Edd: Trash, but oh so enjoyable. Out of all the forgettable, drab songs in this heat, “Poom Poom” will be a sigh of relief. And for some reason I actually love the rap — Sean Paul, you have competition! The booming (or shall I say ‘pooming’) chorus would have more impact if they had a quiet pre-chorus, but let’s be honest, this is still a banger and a half.

Score: 8/10

Sam: Trash, and nothing but trash. The fact that 60% of the lyrics are “Poom poom poom, poom poom poom” shows nothing but sloppy songwriting. Next!

Score: 0/10

Luis: This song is soooo 2011. It’s totally trashy, and I wouldn’t mind it at a club, but I do mind it is on the UMK stage. Apart from being über generic, I’m sorry to say that the guys have minus-zero charisma. Can somebody teach them how you look into the cameras? (And how to do a good music video, as well)

Score: 1/10

Robyn: This is a club track, something that plays in the background while dancing and drinking and flirting takes place in the foreground. There’d probably be a welcome place for it at the EuroClub, but it’s too wallpaper to work as a main stage act at the Globe.

Score: 5/10

Kristin: A purebred dance floor hit from Finland? Check! Its not the most sophisticated composition, but I don’t care. This gets me moving, and although the singer looks about 12 years old, he still sells me every single word — even the repetitive poom poom. Nothing but joy here, and although I don’t see this going on stage at Globen, this is still a damn good song. Y’all want to party???

Score: 8/10

Antranig: While a lot of people sing about their hearts going “Boom Boom”, these boys’ hearts go “Poom Poom” and I love it. The rhythm is infectious and I can’t sit still while this is playing. There is one negative here and that is the rap portion of the song which feels unnecessary — clearly one Gušani brother is sufficient to satisfy me.

Score: 8.5/10

Max: This is both perfectly listenable and completely unsuited to Eurovision. I happily bop my head along to it when it’s playing, but I’m put off by the mind-numbingly repetitive structure and the inoffensive chorus. Once the rap comes along, I’m ready to hit shuffle. “Poom Poom” is probably the most unremarkable entry in the UMK line-up, and I doubt it will hold the audience’s attention when performed in its semi-final.

Score: 5/10

See what happens when jury is divided and outliners are removed – three UMK songs of semi 3 have basically the same, medium result. Thinking about it, 95% of the songs tend to be rated between a 4 and a 6. Not much of an indicator of an actual result. However, I must admit 5hat even if by a tiny margin, many Wiwibloggs jury results did come true. Polls would be more prophetic if only the rigging isn’t so easy to achieve. (cough… Ireland… cough)

It’s so trashy, it’s fun and I really like it! It won’t win but it should get to the final. I doubt they’ll have the same luck the Danish dudes got

How does this have an average score? It’s absolutely dire, both as a song and a potential Eurovision entry!
