On Saturday — after six weeks of pyro, plenty of crushed dreams and endlessly rising expectations — the final of Melodifestivalen 2017 exploded in grand fashion inside Friends Arena. And from the haze of smoke and 12 fierce songs one act climbed to the very top. Robin Bengtsson has won with “I Can’t Go On”. Next stop? Eurovision 2017 in Kyiv!
Seven former Melodifestivalen finalists competed tonight, including the winner Robin Bengtsson. After finishing fifth in last year’s final, Robin Bengtsson was able to grab the trophy this year amid some surprising jury voting that left many questioning their scandi-pop assumptions.
Robin finished fourth in our poll and in the ranking of the Wiwi Jury. wiwiblogger Ron gave the song 9 out of 10 and commented:
“I Can’t Go On” feels like one of the best songs/performances this year. Robin is proving us once again that he has more than just amazing eyes – he can sing and he can move. The song is well produced and so well directed for TV. And while the choreography is complicated, Robin makes it look effortless. I really enjoyed this performance, including the behind-the-scenes tour. When he sings “With just one look you make me shiver” and “I can’t go on when you look this f*cking beautiful” that’s also what I feel when I watch Robin on stage.
After we saw all the performances, the international juries gave out their points. Each of the eleven juries — from France to Italy to Ukraine — gave points to seven of their favourite songs. Among the spokespersons we some some familiar faces, including Armenia’s latest Eurovision representative Iveta Mukuchyan. The favourite of the international juries was Robin Bengtsson with 96 points, followed by Nano and Mariette.
The Swedish public then had some time to vote after seeing which songs the international juries liked the most. Wiktoria got the second most televote and got 51 points, while the televote winner was Nano with “Hold On” with 57 points. But 50 points from the televoters were enough for Robin to win!
Next to the finalists, we also saw a performance by Swedish superstar Zara Larsson. Shirin also performed by covering last year’s winning entry “If I Were Sorry” together with Swedish folk-rock group Damn! and Frans himself. The three hosts David Lindgren, Clara Henry and Hasse Andersson also opened the show with Damn!.

Clearly it’s popular to be rude this year. It’s not our fault that he won, it’s the jury so please don’t blame this on us. The song is better than Frans “Sorry”, just admit it. Still Frans got the good feedback I mean, what the actual F? And what about the other countries, some have even more bad songs! There are so many depressing songs and dumb boring ballads this year, this is a song to dance to. We, Sweden, don’t have to win. We would be very greatfull for a top 10 though. I say go Belgium, Australia and… Read more »
Correction: I gave Jon Henrik and Aninia 9.425 for Saturday’s final.
Back again to finish what I started last night. Here is how I assessed the performances, in the order in which they appeared: 9.313 (7) Ace Wilder: “Wild Child”, 7th with 67 points (35 jury +32 televote) Though the song may have been called “Wild Child”, this was easily the most mature stage presentation of her 3 appearances at MF. Could this have been the reason why it was so easily lost, while either one of her first 2 performances would have been remembered even if she still had to perform first? 9.300 (8) Boris René: “Her Kiss”, 8th with… Read more »
Wow! This is so banal and have nothing to offer. I think that Wiktoria would have been the greatest choice, but there were also other better songs than this. No final for Sweden this year?!
no final for sweden sorry not sorry
STRAIGHT INTO MY TOP 5
My top 39:

YEEAAAAAAH!!! Knock-off Taylor Sh*t and knock-off Rag’n’bone Man didn’t make it!!!
The thing is – while I very much disagree with the winner – that the televote rating is much more fair in Sweden than, let’s say, Slovenia. Had Slovenia applied this voting process, BQL would have won, because they won televote in a landslide. In this system, they would get MUCH more points than second-placed Omar. However, in Sweden this year, there was no such thing as a landslide, with top and bottom songs being only 6% removed from each other. The points reflected that. Had ANY song received, let’s say, 30% of all televote, they’d win the selection regardless… Read more »

From now on, the international juries will always decide the winner, I’m afraid. The televote is bound to be close because of the app voting which is well spread out among all the acts since everyone has 5 free votes available. I kinda miss the times when the televote winner would get 100+ points.
@MS yeah, why the frick not?! Hahaha 😀
The truly clean version:
“I can’t go on, because you’re so very beautiful.”
See how easy that was!
Trocatroc
What, drinking wine during the importent melfest!? ; )
OK I just listened again and it totally sounds like ‘frickin’ so ignore my last post. I must have had to much wine last night haha.
By the way, to a native English speaker his ‘friggin” still sounds like the F word to me and that makes me feel a bit uncomfortable for Eurovision tbh.
@MS Oh I definitely think it will be a top 10, maybe even top 5. Just not a winner by that’s OK, Sweden don’t need to win every other year 😀
Trocatroc, well how fun that I think totally diffrent! I listend to the song when it was possible and thought it was rather boring first time! Then when I saw it performed in Göteborg I though it was much better thanks to a great performance and his carisma!
But I think that the song needs more linenings, I think it is much better now. But not a winner. I just hope for the final and perhaps top 10.
I’ve realised why I don’t like the performance as a whole. This guy doesn’t seem to have any real charisma. His performance is too slick, without and passion and soul. I still think it will do quite well because the song is catchy and the guy is technically hot but I don’t think it can win and nor should it.
I don’t mind the song – it’s a good song with a capable singer. And the competition was tough, as evidenced by the televote result being so close to uniform. Lots of great songs in Sweden this year.
BUT really, jury? Wiktoria near last? Nano well behind this in points? WTF?
At least they made it possible for a song that drew 4th to win. But this wasn’t the best song tonight, sorry. This was quite the shocker to me.
I’m from Sweden. This wasn’t my favorite at all, but it’s a ok. We don’t need to win, but I hope to se Robin in the final and top 10. Thats ok for me.
This is my top this year
1. Loreen
2. Dismissed
3. Jon-Henrik
4. Nano
5. Marinett
6. Benjamin
7. Robin
8.Ace
9. Bella och Filippa
10. Owe : )
I love the song, catchy sound, great staging radio-friendly, my favorite of the final..I can understand the results!! To me some of the finalists were at the same level, and this is the reason some people are unsatisfied with the winner, but he is defenitely a deserved winner, same as someone else would be…
And why do people consider it to be a complete falure if Sweden will be out of the top 3 or 5 and end up.. 7th? I still think it’s a good enough result. For anyone.
I’m so annoyed and done with all unsatisfied comments everywhere about the songs this year. What’s wrong? In Sweden the international juries wanted Robin and he’s liked by the Swedes as well. The song is catchy, radio-friendly with rememberable staging. I couldn’t say that about Robin Stjernberg in 2013. He won in a weak final line-up. This years line-up had many good songs. It was clear from the start that four or five acts could win. So.. I guess that there will be alot of nagging about our song because there were so many potential winners. But Robin was one… Read more »
There is no way that Sweden will miss the Top 5 this year with that show. Maybe Top 3
Sweden really went crazy this year…
What to expect from a country that flops Loreen from the final?
Yeah…. they deserve what they choosed…
Get away from me Stockholm…..
Robin is heading to top 5 in ESC maybe even top 3, with MASSIVE televoting support. He is going to shine like a lightower over this year’s gloomy selection, for me second only to Italy. The top 5 as I see it at the moment are Italy, Sweden, Belgium, Portugal and possibly Romania.
Well, Loreen wasn’t going to go, so…
I like this, but I liked Mariette better.
All the Wiktoria fans crying over the fact she ranked so low in International Jury… i knew her song would have no appeal to them. To an international audience her (and probably Loreen’s song for all her butthurt fans) would not have gone well, they would have been borderline qualifiers. Anyone who was rooting for her saying “There should be no jury” should realise that without the jury Nano would have won, not her. Her song last year was okay but this year’s is completely forgettable. Benjamin getting Top 5 over her was honestly so funny and amazing. I need… Read more »
In 2013, Yohio won the televotes with a MUCH bigger distance than what we saw this year – he had a 28-point advantage over Robin Stjernberg. And the international jury also destroyed his chances. But people didn’t cry nearly as much as they are now.
Which leads me to one simple conclusion: the complainers don’t actually dislike the rules, or this pointing method. They are just crying because their favorites didn’t win.
@Hi: Another quickie, before I go: I think Robin B. will finish somewhere between 8th and 18th. I imagine in the ears of many here, this song is no match for Frans last year, and I assume many of you believe it is on par with Robin Stjernberg’s 1993 entry.
I just finished watching this contest, but I can’t leave my scores just yet. I’ll do that tomorrow; so, I’ll make this quick: Kudos to Robin (who was #3 on my scorecard, behind Jon Henrik/Aninia and Mariette) for cleaning up the lyrics to his song (for what it’s worth), since there will be children watching. Goose eggs to the bookies who royally screwed up almost everywhere, including Hungary (Gabi), Estonia (though they did have Koit/Laura 2nd behind Kerli) and MF (Loreen first, then Wiktoria, who was finished once the jury scores came).
Congrats Italy for winning ESC 2017. Sweden are not going to the final.
A sure qualifier but not a strong contender. I just wish that he can correct how he opens his mounth in the first 10 secs of the songs. It’s not sexy. It’s creepy!!!
30-57 televotes points, that shows how close all songs from first to last were. Public couldn’t decide one bit so the jury made the gaps.
Judging by this it is very probable that the European public will not give much points to Sweden so it again will be the juries to decide on its faith. Hopefully the song will qualify to final or we’ll see another massive change in EBU rules.
Obviously SVT doesn’t want to be in charge of ESC 2018. So send Robin and ok a 13th or 14th position….
