Denmark’s Dansk Melodi Grand Prix brought a rollercoaster of emotions. Sannie rolled around in a bed. Rikke went greyscale. And Ditte Marie brought a riot. But in the end, it was Rasmussen who took the victory and he will fly the Danish flag in Lisbon!
Rasmussen took vikings and made them accessible to the great audience. His entry was full of epic moments and so was his victory! This viking will be sailing the Tagus all the way to Lisbon!
Rasmussen – “Higher Ground” — Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2018
Ten acts battled it out but in the end it was Rasmussen who took the trophy, after two rounds of voting. The ten competing entries were:
- Ditte Marie — “Riot”
- Anna Ritsmar — “Starlight”
- Rasmussen — “Higher Ground”
- Sannie — “Boys on Girls”
- Sandra — “Angels to My Battlefield”
- Lasse Meling — “Unfound”
- CARLSEN — “Standing Up for Love”
- KARUI — “Signals”
- Rikke Ganer-Tolsøe — “Holder fast i ingenting”
- Albin Fredy — “Music for the Road”
The three qualifiers to the super-final were Albin Fredy, Rasmussen and Anna Ritsmar. Then they performed again and Rasmussen came on top with 50% of the votes. In second place was Anna Ritsmar with 31% of the votes, and finally Albin Fredy with 19%.

Tonight’s final also included a performance by Eurovision 2014 winner, Conchita. She marked her return to Denmark by performing her Eurovision winning song, “Rise Like a Phoenix”.
Do you agree with the winner? Was it the best option for Denmark? Shout out in the comment section below!
I know it’s cheesy, but I actually really like this song! And the message.
Held og lykke!
Harkens back to the era of Ruslana tbh. Years ago, this would have been an easy qualifier but I think it won’t pass that easily these days. Yeah, it’s different, but I think many will have the feeling we’ve seen this before. And I don’t think they’ll be able to compete with classic songs such as France or modern favorites such as the Czech Republic, looking at what’s already been chosen. The staging has to be amazing if it wishes to qualify, much more epic than what was done on stage now.
It will pass, just look at how good game of thrones and other series are doing.
I knew Jared Leto was a musician but I didn’t realize he was Danish.
My issue with this song is that Rasmussen needs to stand out more otherwise this is just going to be a non-qualifying filler.
It is sad because I really like these types of songs.
The danish selection this year was – EPIC! I can surely see the top 10 placering to ESC 2018 final, if the vocals sitting in the right X!
#all_aboard!
I love the whole Viking theme going on but unfortunately, the song is poor. Although I will admit it has a catchy chorus, it feels a bit dated and gets repetitive towards the end. I would not rule it out qualifying though if they up their staging to make it more memorable.
he should get naked on stage
LOL
This screams NQ. And probably a last place on my ESC list (and for many others, I presume).
Not my cup of tea.
I have mixed feelings towards this. Not bad but I feel like it’s too much and too little at the same time. It will need really good staging to qualify.
A borderline qualifier.
Starlight was the better song but Higher Ground made the better TV.
Yet it seems starlight won the televote but the juries already had in all practicality handed the win to higher ground before voting started.
Who won the televote? Anna or Rasmussen?
The split could be 2:2:1 from juries or 1:3:1 !!
Albin definitely got only 18% televote!
Did Anna get 42% or 22% is my question and based on youtube views in comparison to Albin I think Anna won the televote!
Well, finally something different. Was going bored with all the ballads, kisses and cry baby faces. Does he perform in theatre? He has great expressions and stage presence. I’d add more smoke to the stage though. The snow effect looks great.
*cringe* this is just some cheesy Disney theme song with a catalog-chosen drum beat.
Ima buy my ticket for semi final 2 just to see that hottie live 😉
Finally. This is the reason why i started watching ESC in the first place. It’s so rare nowadays to see things like this. Europe has so much history, why dont we value and show it? It’s ridiculous how we try to copy what americans do, meanwhile they copy us with all the epic historical movies. Smh
Btw, this definitely resembles the portuguese ocean theme this year. They took that into account and im glad they did. Just like Salvador followed the ‘celebrate diversity’ theme.
Denmark is giving me winner vibes for the first time. Negative reactions are normal, specially when people feel threatened. Good luck Danes!
Really?… Now this is taking Eurovision back to a place it does not need to go – big musical era. Anna’s song would have been a much better choice. A good modern song.
Really? Prejudice again? it’s a SONG contest, not a MODERN SONG contest.
Indeed I agree. Songs do not need to be modern. But there is a difference between classic song and a dated song. In my opinion this entry is of the latter kind, which is not a good contribution for Eurovision
Oh, Salvador Portuguese Fan doesn’t like Rasmussen. Such a tragedy!
Salvador took us back 70 years, we need something to recover from that.
Enough with generalizations. i love sobral and im supporting denmark.
Thanks for your comment. I am truly honored that you follow me so closely and that I have such a big Romanian fan 🙂
All the hate that eurofans are giving to this entry is typical…*Lordi*.
Dont worry Denmark, this will reach a good place and the BEST PART is: It’s the only song so far that has something to do with this years theme: The age of discovery and sea. I really hope portuguese televote and jury will give this 12 points.
Portugal votes in Semi 1 and Denmark is in Semi 2. So, yeah that’s not gonna happen. It’s a meh song, but you really feel the viking vibe.
I was talking about the final.
That’s how good it is for me. They’ll def gonna make it. Yall will see.
My FAVORITE entry so far. BUT…A song in english? How patriotic…I dont get these countries that wanna act so proud of their nations, and yet do this…..sigh. hypocrites. Vikings? ha. British vikings, sure. This is why i say: the UK wins every year. Anyway…The language kind of ruins it for me but the performance and song is freaking amazing so…still my fav.
Sure, they kinda copied Portugals idea with ‘the Sea lady’ by Vania fernandes in ESC…but whatever…easily top 3, it will stand out so much amongst other entries. Easy year for denmark.
In Denmark we have a (stupid) rule that our entires has to be in English. So even if he sang in Danish in our national final, the song would have been translated for the ESC.
Marvellous interval acts. And the sketch about Sweden not voting for Denmark had me in stitches.
I’m on the fence regarding Higher Ground, but regardless it is certain to bring character to Eurovision. Truly a blessing the Danes takes responsibility for representing our Scandinavian historical heritage, so we don’t have to.
This is so bad.. in my bottom two, with Switzerland.
Are you kidding? It’s the best so far.
For me also the worst so far, sorry portugese fella.
portuguese fella why don’t you start respecting opinions
Keisha how about you respect my freedom of speech? i was respectful.
Finally a northern country understands that somebody needs to send a Viking song to Eurovision! I thought Iceland would understand first though.
“Higher Ground” is totally epic if you take it seriously, and deliciously over-the-top if you don’t. 😀
Btw, what’s with that jingle before every song? It’s not 2014 anymore, Denmark…
I thought I was the only one who went lmao why did they keep using the sfx from 2014 on each song ??
You would never see Sweden do this… they’re too influenced by Murica. The country i would expect the most is Finland…unfortunately they have Sara.
They also use the same stage now since 2016, saving money probably
I don’t like the song, but visually they are pretty cool in my opinion. 🙂
I think this Will be top 3…
Top 3 in the bottom…
I agree, hope it will be last
Spanish fans and their insecurities make me laugh.
It will also be top 10… alphabetically.
argghh DR all danish videos are geoblocked >:(`
Atleast we can kind of say that it’s something culturally Scandinavian which should be what ESC is about really…showcasing your culture to the rest of Europe. Something that other Scandinavian countries have shied away from in the quest to sound American. ( *ahem* Sweden).
Interesting choice Denmark. It may be tough to qualify though in May.
The best song from a weak selection. But I don¨t expect Denmark to do better than Anja last year. It’s neither fresh nor exciting, kind of something Iceland would have sent 10 years ago or so. Pleasant, harmless and listenable but that’s that. Like every Danish entry. You don’t mind Danish songs nor do you fancy them either. Same here. I don’t dislike it but nor do I like it either.
I think Denmark needs a major revamp in selection process right now..
No worries…you said the same thing about Sobral last year.
So? Are you saying this is like Salvador? or that this will win? In both cases you would be wrong
Also why spend so much time on what I write? It’s not healthy to obsess over someone that much.
I wrote a few words and it’s so much time? lol i follow this blog and you’re here. So? Not obsessed. Just facts, mate. I’m not saying this will be like him, im saying that you are not mr know it all and that things can happen. Just that.
Strong stage presence, but the song is a bit average. Maybe it was the rigth choice because there weren’t other stand out songs. I think Denmark will struggle to qualify.
Omg, that was amazing!!! Well done, Denmark!
Did they reveal televote and jury split?
YES!!! Today I am really happy! So, not to write 100 comments, here we go: 1) Rasmussen is a deserved winner of DMGP. He is currently my third of ESC 2018! Amazing song, good luck! 2) Speaking of, my second is still Czechia. Amazing performance from Mikolas in Ukrainian semi. 3) La Forza was magnificent! A very, very deserved pass! Must win! 🙂 4) I am glad my vote for Madara was successful. That was magical and she needs to win Supernova! Deserved qualification! 🙂 5) Gergely surpassed his own point record in A-dal. Gosh, I love that song. Good… Read more »
I love how I agree on you with everything, it’s weird. Tonight I was really happy about Rasmussen, Madara, Gergely and Leander kills from Hungary, La Forza and espacially Samir & Viktor, they were great! 😀
It seems like we have a lot in common, Weißbrot! 🙂 That’s cool. I’ll definitely pay attention to your posts / ratings / comments. 🙂 Cheers. 🙂
Ps. I managed to juggle watching multiple shows. First I watched Ukraine up to 8th song (gosh, does that drag or what), then I switched to DMPG, only making a trip to Supernova to watch Madara (while DMPG had a sketch on), continued watching DMPG until the end of performances, switched to Eesti Laul from Aden Ray’s performance till the end (he should have qualified, btw), trying to catch results on Supernova and A-dal while intervals were on Eesti Laul. Supernova ended last (and I was like – Yey, Madara!), and then I watched the whole Melfest semi on STV… Read more »
Buy felicia (Danmark)
Bye*
I’d prefer it if you wrote 100 comments tbh.
No pressure tho. 🙂
DR is so lazy that they cant even build a new set… i mean… moldova builds a new set every year and Denmark has even the same graphics every single year.. bye felicia
https://youtu.be/uM_FK0l8lVg
Live performance of Lie to me
I love the little tune they play before the song starts is the same one from when they hosted in 2014
Great song btw, best chosen so far.
Are you stuck in development? Are the Danes trying to do an Emilie de Forest 2.0 or what? And I ask eurovision-fans the same thing, because I see that many people are loving it, calling it a winner and so on. Sure impressive stage and he’s charismatic buy the song is dated. And Game of Thrones (or could it be The Vikings) is nothing new. So the theme is nothing new either. I love the series a lot though. Maybe that’s also a reason why I don’t want this on a eurovision stage as well. If it wins eurovision then… Read more »
Game of thrones or vikigns is nothing new, but disney ballads and generic pop songs are? You’re delusional.
Who said that?
Me, because i’ve seen you praise those sort of songs
Why is being ‘dated’ regarded such a bad thing anyway? A good song is a good song, if it sounds like it’s from the 50s, 70s, 90s or 2010s. The only time I complain about a song being dated is if it’s bad and it’s bringing back a long forgotten bad trend. Higher Ground is epic! Love it! Don’t care if the style is modern or not. Neither would many others. See what happened with Amar pelos dois, a beautiful, but even older sounding song!
Not a bad choice for Denmark. The quality was very similar throughout the field but “Higher Ground” may have enough of a wow power to qualify. It’s “Pirates of the Sea” 10 years later!
“It’s “Pirates of the Sea” 10 years later!”
I can see the resemblence, even if HG is less humoristic and more film/theater oriented. Coincidentally, love both.
Maybe Brienne will finally pay attention to him.
Omg LOL! Yes I was wondering if anyone else noticed his resemblance to Tormund!
I don’t like that they have fans on the jury. That one guy they spoke to was interviewing the contestants during the week for his fansite, and now he’s deciding the result? Something is not right there.
Pre final my favourites were “Riot”, “Higher ground” and “Signals”. So, I’m happpy with the results. Rasmuseen had probably the best song of all the ten. Having said that, the Danish NF wasn’t the strongest you would expect. I believe it’s a good choice for Denmark but I doubt they will manage to qualify.
Best choice!!
Well I like it! Even if you end up joining us in the Bottom 5, at least it’s different! Good luck Denmark from U.K. <3
Bottom five along with SuRi
Love it! Amazing choice Denmark! My n.1!!
I won’t say that I would listen to it outside of the Eurovision context, but I think it’s a charismatic entry. Nobody will send anything like that and I can see it growing an avid fanbase. We’ll have to see if it will be enough to move Denmark to the final. But it’s way better than last year’s song, that Anja carried as a burden with her voice. Denmark had other options though. “Starlight” wasn’t as fragile as I thought it would be. Anna’s voice is wonderful and she was flawless tonight. “Music for the Road” was catchy and Albin… Read more »
This kind of cliché, over dramatic songs, make me feel ashamed when I watch ESC with my family…
If you are ashamed of watching ESC with your family, that is your problem, not anyone else’s. I’m never ashamed of watching ESC, even when offensive dirge like “Lie To Me” are going.
Well somebody got triggered
This is not gonna pass the semifinals
I don’t know why people like the song so much. It sounds like a Game of Thrones parody.
My thoughts exactly!
Well, the game of thrones is inspired in vikings and ancient histories. So really, we all know what is the parody here.
Deserved winner! Instantly my no.1. Great choice, Denmark!
Bottom with Suri
