It’s been an eventful week in the OT academy. The contestants were told off, Famous was revealed as the only one excited about Eurovision, over 300 songs were received for the Eurovision gala, and they put on yet another gala evening.
Fighting to stay this week was Carlos Right and Marilia. They’d each been up for elimination once before and both have their supporters. Carlos performed Michael Bublé’s “Everything”, while Marilia sang Natalia Lafourcade’s “Hasta la Raíz”.
When when it came down to the voting results, it became clear that if Marilia could survive a sing-off against the super talented and beloved Noelia, she would have no trouble beating Carlos. Mr Right was shown the door after receiving 43% of the vote. This leaves only two boys in the Academy.
The public’s favourite of this week was Sabela. She’s landed in the top three for the past three weeks, but this time she was the favorita. But here’s the thing — this doesn’t seem to be based on her performance this week. Along with María, Sabela performed The Beatles’ pop classic “I Want to Hold Your Hand”. It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t have the wow factor that other performances had. Curiously, María was deemed the weakest link and ended up in the jury’s bottom four.
Another big performance of the evening came from Alba Reche. She tackled “Je veux”, by the French singer Zaz. Alba did ok with the French lyrics and demonstrated her skills on the kazoo. She served the performance with loads of attitude and showed again why she’s such a favourite with the audience.
And things were looking up for Julia this week. Despite being in the bottom four last week, she was back on track with India Martínez’s “90 Minutos”. The song let Julia show off her ability to interpret the emotion of the performance. It was understandably the third public favourite.
Besties Famous and Marta finally got the chance to sing together. They got the party started with their performance of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September”. But! The jury were not impressed with either of their performances and sent both to the bottom four.
Also performing this evening was Natalia, who brought sultry vibes with Bunbury’s “Aunque no sea conmigo”, and Miki, who released his inner pop-rock göd with The Vamps’ “Can We Dance”. Both were safe from elimination.
Sadly Marilia wasn’t safe, and joined María, Famous and Marta in the bottom four. The Academy professors saved Famous, while the other contestants voted to save María. This leaves Marilia up for elimination for the third week in a row, while Marta faces elimination for the second time.
By the way, we’re kind of obsessed with how the weekly favourites are going. Unlike last year, every week it’s been a different act and this week saw another first-timer voted the fave. But next week, all the potential favourites have already won once, so who will be the first act to be voted [email protected] twice?
