She was crowned winner of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2019 on Saturday. But it turns out that 20-year-old Leonora wasn’t the viewers’ favourite to represent Denmark at Eurovision in Tel Aviv.
National broadcaster DR has just revealed the results from yesterday’s Dansk Melodi Grand Prix super final, which featured Sigmund, Leonora and Julie & Nina. And the numbers show that the jury and the televoters didn’t exactly see eye to eye.
The jury and the televoters had 50 per cent of the vote each, and the jury preferred Leonora and her warm and melodious “Love is forever” and placed her as number one with 24 per cent of the votes. Interestingly, the jury didn’t place fan favourite “League of Light” with Julie & Nina as runner-up, but only put them in third place with 12 per cent. The jury gave Sigmund and “Say My Name” 14 per cent of the votes.
The viewers, on the other hand, fell in love with the Danish-Greenlandic tune and named Julie & Nina the winners with 23 per cent of the vote. They put Leonora second with 18 per cent, while Sigmund had to settle for only nine per cent of the televote.
The results in total:
- Leonora: 42 per cent
- Julie & Nina: 35 per cent
- Sigmund: 23 per cent
DR: Voting system here to stay
DR’s Eurovision boss Jan Lagermand Lundme is content with the current voting system even though the viewers and the jury didn’t agree on who the 2019 DMGP winner should be.
“This system is what is most viable when it comes to getting far in Eurovision. The people and the jury may focus on different things and that gives a broad focus”, Jan Lagermand Lundme explains to DR’s Grand Prix site.
Confusion about Greenlandic votes
After the show was over many Greenlandic voters complained about the fact that they hadn’t received a confirmation from DR that their text message vote had been registered. That led to a lot of speculation and confusion about whether Julie & Nina had missed a lot of votes which, in the worst case, could have cost them the victory.
However, Jan Lagermand Lundme assures viewers that all valid votes have been registered.
“We haven’t experienced any errors in our text message voting, we would catch that very quickly. And we got a lot of votes from Greenland”, the Danish Eurovision boss says to newspaper BT.
Who do you think Denmark should have chosen as their act for Tel Aviv? Let us know in the comments box below.
Julie & Nina would’ve been something else for Eurovision and one rare opportunity for Greenland to be represented at a huge global competitive event, pity! that’s 3 NF televote winners that were denied by the jury now…
Denmark made the right decision, Leonora will go to the final and will end up at the left side of the scorebord.
Julie & Nina had the better song but its not like it would have done better. At best and most optimistic it would have got upper top 15 or lower top 10. Not that Leonora will reach those heights…
Denmark, let’s just say you were lucky to have the jury.
Really? League of light didn’t even belong to superfinal. Even singers seemed bored.
It’s unfortunate.
Still, not like they had great songs in the superfinal to begin with.
Best song of the night was Rasmussen’s Go beyond. Pity they didn’t send that.
So, what exactly didn’t juries like in League of Light and put it third? (even behind a totally generic pop song sung by an extravagant guy whose voice was 99% produced by his nasal cavity?) It has become ridiculous how five random people can be that disrespectful to the opinion of a whole nation (not only in Denmark but in a string of national finals this year)
“League of Light” is an “epic-power”-song. But he had to be performed in an epic way. The women (who sang really good!) were standing and walking and standing. Sigmund had a hand choreo, dancers, a space ship set and even more light than in the show of “League of Light”. I am all with the juries to be honest 🙂
Excuse me, but for me the song comes first. Of course a good show is important, but it’s still a “song” contest, not a “show” one.
it doesn’t really matter to be honest…
Not entirely surprised more people voted for league of light – defs a more appealing song. I don’t THINK 5% is that big of a discrepancy but I am a little surprised the jury put League of Light in third. Well, it’s an acceptable result considering Eurovision works on a 50% jury and 50% voter split.
Well, I’m glad the jury saved us from a boring ass song
I hope they will pull out a Anna Nissen and return next year. We need Greenlandic at Eurovision!
Nuuk 2021! Let’s make it happen
i love both songs but wasn’t the dmgp super final 100% televote in the past years ?
No
Well in this case we are not talking about massive gaps between the finalists so I guess it is not too shocking
Once again the jury favourite wins. Is this a surprise or not?
No, that’s math
