He rose to prominence on X-Factor Italy and this year won the prestigious Sanremo Music Festival.

And now Italy’s Mahmood has another title to his name: winner of the OGAE Poll 2019.

Mahmood managed to win, despite only picking up one set of douze points from the final four. Only host country Israel had Italy as their top pick.

OGAE Lithuania and EC Germany had the Netherlands as their favourite, while OGAE Sweden went for Switzerland.

The OGAE Poll 2019 has been more tightly fought than most. Only 10 points separate first place Italy and third place The Netherlands, with third place Switzerland only a further five points behind.

You can see the final scores from the OGAE Poll 2019 below:

OGAE Lithuania results

  1. Netherlands (12 points)

OGAE Israel results

OGAE Sweden results

  1. Switzerland (12 points)
  2. Italy (10 points)
  3. Norway (8 points)
  4. Netherlands (7 points)
  5. Cyprus (6 points)
  6. San Marino (5 points)

  7. Azerbaijan (4 points)

  9. Iceland (2 points)
  10. Denmark (1 point)

That means the final scoreboard looks like this:

Italy – 411 points
Switzerland – 406 points
Netherlands – 401 points
Norway – 224 points
Cyprus – 218 points
Sweden – 191 points
Azerbaijan – 123 points
Iceland – 114 points
Russia – 106 points
Greece – 89 points
Spain – 69 points
Malta – 64 points
France – 25 points
San Marino – 23 points
Slovenia – 22 points
Denmark – 19 points
Portugal – 19 points
Belgium – 17 points
North Macedonia – 13 points
Albania – 10 points
Armenia – 9 points
Estonia – 7 points
Poland – 7 points
Czech Republic – 6 points
United Kingdom – 6 points
Israel – 5 points
Australia – 2 points
Hungary – 2 points
Latvia – 2 points

Austria, Belarus, Croatia, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia failed to receive any points.

While the results indicate popularity in an element of the fan community, they should be taken with a hefty pinch of salt. The OGAE poll is not a particularly accurate barometer of Eurovision success.

Per me deve vincere questa canzone o quella di Malta. Mi piace anche quella di Spagna.

I agree Malta and Italy have the best songs this year. I’m going to vote for Chameleon, but I would be happy if Soldi wins too.

Hya Ya All!! King Duncan was in The House last nite in Amsterdam, in small and lovely venue. This not Arcade, its on his new forthcoming album!! Enjoy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60yLmsevdVk

No doubt that Soldi would be one of people’s choice, yet predicting jury points for ‘Soldi’ might be tricky. It’s not exactly full of raps, but it’s not really a lyrical song either, more like a pop tune. The Eurovision version was also cut in unusual places, so there woud be a slight change of reaction for first-time listeners or the juries. We also haven’t really talked about any staging possibilities since this could elevate or drown a song. But, May 4 is still 2 days more to go!

Mahmood music, in particular Soldi, is mix of urban R&B, oriental sounds… it is not a typical music genre, when he is asked to define its style, Mahmood decided to call it “Marocco pop”

Mahmood is actually my winner, thus i’m happy with the result BUT i find netherland and switzerland overrated. Duncan’s song in not one of my likes, but i basically don’t like ballads (nonetheless: it IS hyped) and Switzerland’s is nice but not a winner. And I’d like to see more points going to Iceland, Portugal, Malta, Slovenia….

Has nobody actually considered the fact that many voters haven’t followed the songs and that that Arcade and Soldi may not be the only ones with a chance of winning. There is so much more than OGAE polls to consider. The rehearsals haven’t even started yet so people chill down a bit.

2 THINGS MIGHT STOP MAHMOOD FROM WINNING. 1- THE SONG IS ONLY PERFORMING ON THE GRAND FINAL, HENCE IF PEOPLE DON’T GET THE MESSAGE STRAIGHT AWAY IT WILL STRUGGLE TO WIN PUBLIC’s VOTES. 2- THE SONG IS VERY SOPHISTICATED AND REFINED BUT THIS CAN ONLY COMPLETELY BE UNDERSTOOD BY ITALIAN PEOPLE. THIS IS A MUCH BETTER AND MORE REFINED SONG THAN GABBANI’s SONG OR ANY OTHER THAT PARTICIPATED TO THE CONTEST FOR ITALY, YET IT IS SO NEW AND CARRIES A SPECIFIC MESSAGE TO MAHMOOD AND MILAN THAT ONLY ITALIAN PEOPLE CAN FULLY APPRECIATE IN A WAY. i cba to read all of what this says due to the capitalisation hurting my eyes but not too many people watch the semi finals, mainly eurovision fans who already have their favourites, which is why songs are always said to have to be memorable from first listen because most people hear the songs first time in the final

it would be correct that even the big 5 would perform in the semi-finals. Having only one pass on Saturday I don’t find it helpful to make a song known and get into people’s heads to be evaluated as a duty. Not everyone follows the internet and youtube!

For once a good OGAE result… But still would have liked to see Iceland in the top 5.

The smaller stage and more intimate stadium will benefit both songs from Italy and Netherlands I suspect, and lesser so the uptempo songs that could have done well with a huge jumping cheering crowd on the tv screens.

Will be exciting to see the actual result come May 18th now 🙂 can’t belive it is May 2019 already!!!!!

Francesco Gabbani, anyone? Lol, he won’t get many jury votes, rap doesn’t work with the conservative jurors from Moldova, Albania, Russia, Romania, Armenia and so on. Mark my words…

Francesco gabbani was also the bookies favourite, Mahmood isn’t. So there’s no room for comparison. Right now Italy is the underdog, kinda like Portugal in 2017. That’s why I think italy Will get it this year..and people also said that netta will be last at the at the juries last year, and she was third. Stop determine what the juries taste is. And even if he’ll be third at the juries he could win with the televotes.

Soldi wont win televote for sure. It got 14% from the Italian televote… This does not resonate with most people. At least not with me. I will clap for him to leave the stage only.

Your hate for Mahmood is unbelievable! In Sanremo Mahmood was against Ultimo who sold out the Olimpic Stadium and other arenas and il Volo. Of course the Italians wouldn’t vote him and he sang in Arabic on the Sanremo stage,a very classy Italian festival with typical Italian music and don’t let me start with the discussions about his egyptian origins . But after Sanremo his success in Italy can’t be denied. Don’t let your hate make you deaf and blind! Funny that whenever Arcade comes up on top of a poll there are lots of comments about it being “hyped” (although most don’t seem to understand the meaning of the word) , but when Soldi comes first no one is speaking about hyped. So most hard-core Eurovision fans prefer Soldi (and are hyping it..?? 😉 but can’t deal with the fact that many others (including wiwi jury) prefer Arcade. Bit childish.. both are great songs so let’s see if Europe picks either of these songs as the winner in 2 weeks . Exciting 🙂

David F

Definitely exciting to see which way Europe will go with this field of entries. The final voting looks set to be very close.

It does seem like a credible (if unlikely) possibility that the final result might end up in a tie that has to be divided by the amount of 12 points received.

It’s also now as much a battle to earn a Top 10 score in the Grand Final.

I really do not see any legitimacy within the OGAE polls and furthermore that the UK branch of the OGAE (OGAE UK) is involved in the shortlisting of their entries, which is ludicrous. (Does any other country use their regional OGAE fan club to help shortlist their entries for a national final or to advise an internal entrant, I don’t think so.) I personally cannot see the reason why a fan-club in association with BASCA or the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors for short is even allowed to be involved in the national selection for the UK let… Read more »

All the OGAE poll tells us is what the favourites are of OGAE members. It doesn’t claim the poll is anything else. 🙂

As for the UK song selection process. OGAE UK was only ever used to filter through all the public submissions, leaving the BBC to organise the industry submissions. No OGAE UK shortlisted acts have ever made it to Eurovision. Let’s see how “Bigger Than Us” fares in Tel Aviv!

Man, I didn’t expect Ireland to do amazingly well, but zero points is kinda harsh. Also, giving at leat one point to Germany, Austria, Romania or even Serbia wouldn’t hurt. I’d like to believe those entries were constantly 11th-20th, just never really got enough votes to be in club’s top 10. Still, what can you do? Last year 4 of our bottom finishers ended up qualifying, and I believe that this year in the final there’s a place for some null points receivers as well.

I hope Mahmood wins, he is definitely the king.
When I saw him for the first time in an ESC presentation, he had a big impact on me, I couldn’t sleep during several nights.
His features, the most beautiful I’ve ever seen; his body, that is fire; his dark eyes, deep and malinchonic; his smile, that is perfect; his lips…. I think a kiss by this mouth can take everybody in heaven

Italy is the winner. I have no doubt about it. the Netherlands is good (it’s my second place), but it doesn’t have the whole package for it to be a winner. Soldi got it all- amazing song, originality, contemporary yet artistic sound, it got a story behind it (all the stuff about his dad), and a very charismatic singer with great personality. And all the political stuff with the Italian minister that didn’t want him, will make it even more interesting. Italy is the winner, mark my words. I can put money on it. And They deserve it! I think it will do well both at the juries and the televotes, maybe even win both. It got a strong fan base that will vote for him, and its also sounds good in first hearing, its very catchy with the claps and people love the Italian language. When the rehearsel starts, Italy will top thr betting odds, it’s very clear to me.

I very much hope you are right, what can I say? I’d personally be happy if a non-English song won this year (Portugal, I am thinking about you [of course if Italy doesn’t win first haha]). I think Italy is the dark horse of the favourites – everyone knows it’s going to do well but I think everyone is underestimating its chances of winning. You have to remember that Mahmood won over two thirds of the jury vote, so if that’s anything to go by he is sure to do well with juries. From a televote perspective, the song has mass appeal, is contemporary and is very accessible and I can definitely see people going for this. If there is anybody competing with the Netherlands for the win it’s not Russia, Switzerland or Sweden, it’s Italy.

The studio version of Soldi is great, but singing live is not Mahmood’s greatest strength. The juries will mark him down for that of course. They will do so with Luca too. It would be a surprise for me if Soldi manages top 3. A pleasant surprise though!

Have you seen his performance at Sanremo though? I wouldn’t say it’s a weakness of Mahmood. Actually I would prefer to call it a strength, his unique voice that fits both, “rapping” and singing (he also has about 3-4 high notes in Soldi which he did hit very well at Sanremo), and his very overwhelming stage presence (in my opinion he delivers the song’s emotions perfectly) combined could actually make him a jury’s favorite if he doesn’t mess it up 🙂 but we will see at Saturday! I hope you’ll have lots of fun!!!

Seeing how close both Eurojury and OGAE voting were it would be fun if it suggests that the actual voting will be close and tight. Cause it’s far more interesting to watch than when someone wins by landslide. Though with that many voting countries a close race is pretty difficult to achieve.
Also 400 points for all top 3 acts is impossible. No way three countries will get that many points..

Rom
Guest

2016 was a close race though, with Russia scoring 490 or so points, and both Australia and Ukraine scoring more than 500 points so its not impossible. It is surprising to see the top 3 with 400 plus points here for OGAE.

Denis
Guest
Denis

Two countries isn’t impossible but three countries? That is what, 1200 points give or take.? That would mean people almost exclusively vote for three songs and I can’t see that happening..
That would also mean that these songs are all that great, or that the rest of the field is weak.

Rom

But if you look through the results of the clubs, almost all clubs put those 3 songs in the top 3. Sometimes theyd be a little lower or absent completely but thats how those 3 got 400 plus points.

I think it’s not something we can figure out at the moment. We realized Francesco Gabbani was not going to win only after the reharsals, when we saw that the staging was completely inapprioriate and the overall performance didn’t have the same energy it had in Sanremo. The song itself was definitely a winning one though.

So, as for now, everything can still happen.

Gabanni song was definitely the winning one ??? I always said it since the first day it was published long before the rehearsal that it’s not going to win and it didn’t. I said “a winning one”, not “the winning one”. The song was an ironic and subtle critisism to the western society, where some people stupidly aspire to reach spiritual peace and escape stressful situations by using methods from the Eastern world like Yoga or Buddhism, and at the same time they don’t want to give up to modern technology and hectic routines. The ape was a reference to the regressing Evolution. Even with all of that, the electro-pop upbeat style created a very enjoyable song by most fans. That’s a good question. Also these ogae mainly copy and paste the top 3 achieved over 400 points close to each other. Yes Stephanie I’ m a big supporter of Mahmood but I agree with you that this poll doesn’t mean he’ll win… But I’m happy a lot of people like the song, in particular thinking of the hate he received just after sanremo by some politicians or fans of other singers, saying this song didn’t deserve, it was an horrible song and so on… And more, debate about his roots, sexual orientation… It was just a little part of Italians but you know it was horrible to see all these stupid polemics… Then, after Sanremo we discovered a real “mahmoodworld” when… Read more »

You are sure right, but I have the feeling this time it’s different. The song is more contemporary and genuine. It isn’t a generic powerful operatic ballad or a constructed radio friendly Italian pop song. It is way bigger than those two trust me. My comment should never be taken too seriously anyway.

Just a little clarification: Mahmood didn’t rise to prominence with X factor, he was (undeservedly) eliminated after one of two shows and afterwards he was unknown by people… After this experience he worked in a bar during some years I think, opening the bar at 5 o’clock in the morning and attending, in the afternoon, an important music school in milan. He said when he did X factor he was too young and just a singer, it was not the right time for him for having success, and after x factor he started writing lyrics and composing music too… In… Read more »

I can’t see Itay as a winner ( Personally it’s in my 15th place ) … I think it will be between 7th-10th in the final . Switzerland on the other hand , can be 3rd or 4rth in the final but if his vocals are not okey ( not even with that easy song ) it will end up 7th-10th . As for the Netherlands ( It’s in my 3rd place ) but before the rehearsals he has more chances to win than enyone ! What a joke … Norway is 4th . Well it’s in my top 10… Read more »

Italy won’t finish that low, it’s kinda impossible. Yeah, it might not fight for the 1st place, however I don’t see it finishing outside top 5. Right now I would predict Russia as a winner, I see it as the safest entry going really high both with the juries and the televote. And of course The Netherlands has all the arguments, from both parts, so I think it will between these 2 countries. Mahmood could do bad with the juries, also his live interpretation doesn’t seem anything special. A nice surprise could be Norway, at least with the televote I… Read more »

Interesting point of view. I kinda agree with you. I have a feeling that the game will be played between unexpected players… Russia and Cyprus will come up with big things on stage since they have the two most experienced and successful singers of this year

This year’s OGAE top 10 consists of all the countries (with the exception of Azerbaijan) that are in the bookmakers top 10… This year’s contest shall be really interesting…

I think that the odds might have influenced them a little too much. For example I don’t see Sweden finishing top 10 by any mean.

….u think the juries won’t vote for sweden heavily enough ? too late for love is jury bait

To be sincere I expect a lower amount of points from the juries beside the previous years. But even with the juries, the televote will put them low again.

Sweden will surely get more votes from the televoting than last year.
