Australia in Junior Eurovision 2019: Jordan Anthony “We Will Rise”

Since debuting in 2015, Australia has always selected both its act and song internally. And 2019 is no different. Broadcaster ABC unveiled Jordan as its singer on 1 September, while “We Will Rise” followed just over a month later on 6 October.

The antipodean nation has a stellar reputation to maintain. It’s never finished outside the top ten, and both of its last two entries came third.

Jordan is best known to the Australian public from competing on the eighth season of The Voice Australia in summer 2019. Yes, The Voice not The Voice Kids.

Mentored by Australian pop diva Delta Goodrem, Jordan finished fourth — a fantastic achievement for a 14-year-old competing with people much older than him and with significantly more singing experience. He is the first contestant from the main version of The Voice to appear at the Junior contest.

And Jordan is a young man of firsts. He is also the first male to represent the land down under at JESC.

What do the “We Will Rise” lyrics mean?

“We Will Rise” tells us that life can be tough at times. There will be hurdles. But we are encouraged to not let those issues pull us back. We should be strong and combat those worries.

As the track is aimed at children, it can be interpreted to be about bullying — a major issue most kids face. Its message tells victims of bullying to not let “them” bring you down. Be strong against the bullies.

Recently, the singer gave a mini-concert of his favourite songs, including “We Will Rise” in his home city of Perth, Western Australia. He was asked about the meaning of the song: “For me, it’s about knowing that there will be a time that I will rise again. In terms of the ‘we’ part, I have been put down a lot in my life, I’ve been bullied a lot and it’s just knowing that for those who have been doubted and put down, we will rise”

“We Will Rise” lyrics — Jordan Anthony (Australia JESC 2019)

Written and composed by: Jordan Anthony and MSquared

English Text

You know that I’m around
To light you up in the dark
You can fight another round
No this won’t tear you apart

Don’t give up
We will not back down
We will stand up proud
Don’t lose heart
Even in the pain
You gotta try again

Rise
Higher and higher
Up from the fire
Rise
Out of the shadows
Into hope
Rise, rise, rise
We will rise, rise, rise

I see you marching on
Your day has finally come
Lifting up that winner’s crown
You’re setting fire to the sun

Don’t give up
We will not back down
We will stand up proud
Don’t lose heart
Even in the pain
You gotta try again

Rise
Higher and higher
Up from the fire
Rise
Out of the shadows
Into hope
Rise, rise, rise
We will rise, rise, rise

When the days are long
And the nights are cold
I will shine my light
We’ll be brave and bold
When the nights are cold
I’ll be by your side

Rise
Higher and higher
Up from the fire
Rise
Out of the shadows
Into hope
Rise, rise, rise
We will rise, rise, rise

How did Australia get away with this? The entire song’s melody almost sounds the same as “Rewrite The Stars” from The Greatest Showman but with less instruments and a tempo that’s a bit slower.

This song is the exact same song as last year’s, just a bit less impactful. It will top the jury votes, get a few 30 points from the televote and get a lot of hate and dislikes on YT because everyone will blame Jordan and Australia for, again, being a jury favorite (as if it were their fault)

Sounds very good, and it has a great message. Every year Australia’s song has been a contender to win, and this one is also, but the televote could depend a lot on staging. I expect this to score very high with juries.

And again I am the rebell here: I really enjoy it. It starts slow, vulnerable, yet uplifting. The bridge is absolutely giving me chills, when it becomes dynamic with “When the days are long. And the nights are cold”. And then the vulnerable and elegant “Rise” again. Give him proper lights and hand movements and it will be a fantastic moment. Is it safe? Maybe. But so what! We need this. I can imagine many children listen to this, overcoming their haters. Cause everybody is worth rising <3

It’s great to see the UK sending a singer to Poland. I think it’s playing it a little safe by sending in Michael Rice’s younger brother. Probably finish in a similar position.

It’s a dull and flat entry from Australia that’ll get far too many jury points as usual. I thought “Speak Up” a couple of years ago, although flawed, was at least a step in the right direction but the last two songs have been really underwhelming.

Briekimchi – 100 % agree with you …..they send awesome singers but the songs are too “safe” for my taste ….there are no edges in the songs that would let them stand out of the other songs in the competition. I don’t say that “We Will Rise” is a bad or cheap song …. but after you listened to that song it is out of your head. On the other side look at the song from Carla (France) this year – I have the song the whole time in my head ….the same is with Ireland. “Speak up” was a… Read more »

Michael Rice (“we will RISE” xd) of JESC for me. Like Deban said once, it’s like soup. “You must have more than 1 ingredient to make a soup. He has good voice. What else is happening?”. I’m not trying to be mean. All I’m trying to say is that someone wasted his chances with bland, generic song.

But he’ll do great with juries for sure.

Standing up to such atrocious song writing would be the right thing to do here.

jury-bait song that doesn’t understand the purpose of the junior eurovision, australia had the same problem last year

I was waiting for days to comment on this entry, and to basically express my frustration at the safe, uninspired, jury-bait entries that Australia keeps sending to JESC. But now that I have read the song lyrics (which Jordan actually wrote), in tandem to Jordan’s statement that he has been a victim of bullying, I now get a greater sincerity and genuineness in this song, which I felt was lacking before. Having said that, I just can’t sugar-coat it… The song itself is very similar to Australia’s JESC entry from last year (i.e., a fantastic vocalist singing about not giving… Read more »

Jordan has amazing voice and he has so much talent, but the song is bland. The song is repeative, especially with the word ”Rise”. I can’t really feel anything while listening. Even though i would want to. And the song is meant give power. Closer; He deserves better song.
