The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — continues to rate and review the songs competing in the andra chansen round of Sweden’s Melodifestivalen 2020. Next up, we listen to former  Cookies ‘N’ Beans singer Frida Öhrn who has “We Are One”. Did we feel at one with her song? Read on to find out!

Frida Öhrn – “We Are One

“We Are One” reviews

Angus: If you aren’t charmed by Frida Öhrn you haven’t got a soul. If you aren’t charmed by “We Are One” nobody would blame you. The leading lady knows what to do on stage, makes the best of what she’s been given and twirls that kimono like her life depends on it. But at the end of the day, the song has a message we’ve heard before and its flaws are exposed by the lack of staging.

Score: 3/10

Florian: Off to a promising start, this song lost some of its potential for me as it progressed. While Frida’s vocals are to be praised, the song doesn’t come across as highly modern or refreshing. However, the staging shows potential with Frida highly engaging with the audience, she’s also captured in some great camera angles.

Score: 6/10

Luis: Frida knows what to do on stage. She’s transformed this mediocre and cliched pop song into an enjoyable performance… and that would be it. “We Are One” is so stereotypical it could come from a free background music bank. Luckily, there was a singer behind it who was able to uplift it to unthinkable heights. In the end, this is a song which wouldn’t make the cut for O Melodie Pentru Europa or Belarus’ national selection which has qualified for andra chansen. Props Frida, come back next year with something better.

Score: 6/10

Robyn: I wouldn’t normally go for a song like this, but there’s something really compelling about Frida’s performance. Her country style gives the song an earthy edge, turning up the “folk” side of folk-pop. It was a great show to open its semi-final and that’s where its strengths lie. When she emphatically chants “clap! your! hands!”, it’s impossible to not get caught up in the spirit.

Score: 8/10

It’s definitely not the best song out here and the staging doesn’t help at all. However, despite the cheesy lyrics, there’s something about her and her voice that warms my heart and I can’t help but listen to this song.

No one’s going to address the fact that James Corden brought up Nannes song in his show! LOL

Where did that one come from?

Spotify:
Felix Sandman 1 622K
Anis don Demina 1 320k
Paul Rey 1 054k
Drängarna 1 049k

Not covering all of them.
Of course, the finalists are somewhat easier to compare because they were all released at the same time

Frida is amazing. But she is better than the song. She might make it to the final though

This is quite typical in many aspects, but feels genuine and sweet thanks to Frida’s charm. Possibly my second favorite from the last semi.

I think she deserved to go DTF. It wasn’t exactly the best heat.
