Germany in Junior Eurovision 2020: Susan “Stronger with You”
Germany has been linked to Junior Eurovision since the very beginning. Yet despite an intention to partake in both 2003 and 2004, the broadcaster NDR withdrew both times. However, children’s channel KiKa broadcast the 2003 contest and a debut was never ruled out.
Ten years later, in 2014, ZDF attended the 2014 contest in Malta. After that year’s success, the 2015 and 2016 contests were live-streamed on eurovision.de. Later, in 2019, KiKA and NDR attended the contest in Gliwice, and on July 2020, KiKA confirmed that Germany would make its JESC debut in Warsaw.
Seventy applicants vied for the right to represent Germany. These were whittled down to five finalists. They competed on the selection show Dein Song für Warshau, judged by jury members Max Mutzke (who represented Germany at Eurovision 2004), Levent Geiger, Michelle Huesmann and Martin Haas.
All five finalists performed two original songs by Geiger — “See You Later” and “Stronger with You”. On 2 September, Susan won singing her version of “Stronger With You”.
Susan Oseloff is a 13-year-old native of Berlin and an ardent Eurofan. Upon her win, she said, “since I was little, it has always been my dream to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest. It is all the more exciting that I am now allowed to represent Germany at Junior Eurovision. I hope that I can make my country and the people who stand behind me proud.”
What do the “Stronger With You” lyrics mean?
In a time filled with fear and uncertainty, it’s not exactly the best time to be a kid. This mood is reflected very strongly throughout “Stronger With You”: “You see the pictures, and it makes you speechless/say, do you also feel fury and despair?”
When faced with this hopelessness, you need to fight it: “shout even louder, there’s so much more to you”. Susan sings that adversity can be defeated by working together: “This is my dream and I need you to be on my team/I do, ‘cause I am stronger with you”.
The song also has flickers of hope and positivity: “You see the future, and you know that you can manage it/always listen to your heart, have courage and dare.” It’s a powerful message of resilience and community, and will definitely be very well received by everyone watching in November.
The music video features Susan watching videos of her friends on her phone and dancing on her own. By the end of the song, she unites with her friends and dances with them, looking much happier as she does.
Interspersed with this are scenes of Susan singing in an empty concert hall, a familiar sight in 2020. It’s a moody but heartwarming affair. It’ll be exciting to see that emotion carry through to the performance.

What do you think of Germany’s debut effort? Let us know in the comments below.
yes. he wrote the two songs for Dein Song für Warschau, and five different artists (none of them Levant) performed each of them. he was then on the panel of the jury with other artists to choose the song and the performer. just btw if this is what is confusing you, Dein Song is a separate entity to Dein Song für Warschau.
