Germany had to decide between six candidates and the viewes chose Malik Harris to represent its country with his song Rockstars. Last time Germany picked its representative through a national final was in 2019.
Eventhough he was not the winner of the online voting, Malik Harris got to the top through the televoting and will represent Germany at this years Eurovision Song Contest in Turin. His warm and melancholic chorus mixed with rapping in the verses convinced the viewers at home during the show. Mael & Jonas won the online voting but were only in third place in the televoting which made them land into the second place overall. Our readers’ fan favourite Felicia Lu got into fourth place.
The vote was decided by public vote alone. These votes were divided into two constituencies. The first is the televote consisting of phone and SMS votes cast on the night. The second is online votes, which had been coming in for 5 days.

Malik Harris is a German-American pop singer, rapper and songwriter. Days before he knew that he actually would win the German national final, he said:
“I’d be so proud to represent Germany with my music on an international stage. In Rockstars, I lay my feelings bare, and I can’t wait to perform the song live and share it with a big audience. It’s a song that has incredible personal significance for me and offers a glimmer of hope in these difficult times, while also showing people that we’re all in the same boat.”
Germany had some great interval acts and Eurovision stars on its show on that night. Eurovision 2014 winner Conchita Wurst and old German representatives Jane Comerford and Gitte Haenning sang a medley of various Eurovision songs. After ‘No No Never’, ‘Rise Like A Phoenix’ and ‘Euphoria’ they also sang ‘Ein bisschen Frieden – A little hope’ which made Germany win the contest back in 1982 and is now more relevant then ever in these difficult times.
However, probably the most emotional impact had Jamala singing her song ‘1944’. She entered and left the stage with tears and a Ukrainan flag. During an interview with the show host Barbara Schöneberger she was very thankful to be the big voice for so many Ukrainan people.
Are you happy about the results? Or did you have another winner? Let us know in the comment section below!
By the way: Marvin Dietmann is responsible for the staging of the German entry. I hope it won’t be as bad as in 2017 when Levina sung “Perfect Life”.
Why is there always so much hate for germany? Yeah, Jendrik, Sister and Levina had awful songs, but give this one a chance and stop hating around.
There is some raw honesty about this song and performance that gives me some Roman Lob vibes. Beware of this one, it could be a surprise
Actually the odds for Germany are bad: 21st place at the moment.
Probably the best of the 6 songs. But this tells more about the quality of the other 5 songs.
I actually like it. Yes it might be unremarkable but it is a very simple sweet song. But what ultimately makes the song is Malik’s sincerity. There is something very honest about him and you believe when he sings. The rap part especially is what sells it. I do think it could do better than previous German efforts, with different staging it could even reach top 15
I just realised Felicia was second to last with televote. I was not surprised because her performance didn’t help but seeing Itunes or Apple in Germany.. and Anxiety is doing worse than other songs like Swear to God so I guess it was another case of a fan bubble thing.
Bottom 3
I’m sorry for him, but this screams bottom 5. Even as a radio song this is totally unremarkable, and somehow I don’t get the feeling he’ll be given what’s needed to elevate this on the Eurovision stage
Habe you heard the other songs that has already been revealed? Maybe Rockstars is not the best and most outstanding song, but it has a lot of quality and passion. 2022 is a horrible season, with so many trashy songs. Bottom 5 would be compared to the rest of the songs a shame for europe.
I wish Eros would have won. He was the best by far.
If the staging is amazing maybe this can get some points and avoid being last place. All the best Germany!
Germany……………..zero points
Not if juries from neighboring countries vote for Germany.
I’m quite surprised no one is talking about Emily here
i think everyone forgot her performance, just as she did with her lyrics
She eliminated herself, bad song paired with forgotten lyrics, no surprise almost no one voted for her.
Emily confessed she suffers from Attention deficit disorder.
I really like this, it’s got an authenticity a lot of other entries lack
This looks like Malik had his birthday and invited some friends and relatives in his backyard and the surprise of the night was him singing with a power point projection of old pictures behind him. It’s not bad, it’s not amazing, and that’s exactly why he has many chances to come last. The songs that got 0 last year had more impact than this.
Damn, you’re evil.
Damn you are a no lifer that replied to every comment here with “you are evil, shut up, germany is the best” and other disgusting things. Grow up and do better.
I assume she can’t be older than 14.
Yet another example of why the Big 5 needs to end. This will take the place in the final of a more deserving song. It’s ridiculous and corrupt.
You’re wrong. Let’s get a new trend going: #GermanyForEurovisionSongContest2023
Not bad not good for me… at least i think that this can do better than last year’s entry
Where is the straight-forward speech that german people usually have? It was the most euphemistic to called “Germany 12 points” to that show. That’s called “german diplomacy” hahaha.
UK and Germany, the suckers of Eurovision. And you are suckers because you only want to be it
Four of the last six German entries failed to score 12 points in total. Malik Harris could make it 5/7 and three televoting zeros in a row. The threat is real.
NDR calling the show like this is just more proof of their total incompetence and unwillingness to learn from their past mistakes.
You monster! 🙁
somebody needs to block you from this site
1944 gave me chills.
Malik was tge best among available choices but will do slightly better than Jendrik.
meh. I felt like I was watching a kid performing for his nan in her living room.Stage felt empty. Boring voice which will just be forgettable in the grand final. Bottom five for me already.
Great choice Germany! Malik is an amazing singer and the song is powerful and heartfelt. I can’t wait to see him blow the stage away in Turin!
Finally someone who likes it!
Which place you think he will get? I don’t care about the others but I expect him higher than 18th
Great someone appreciates this
I think he will finish higher than people expect him to
I’m annoyed that some people now try to lecture germans (or say we are annoying), that we should not mad about the selection when the most positive feedback for Malik is along these lines: “Well with a way better staging it will maybe not be last place!” … Just say it how it is: It’s mediocre and badly executed. Every year we have to hope and pray for pity points and that’s frustrating. We are the richest country in europe and have a big music industy, our broadcaster is one of the biggest best funded in the world. So “bad… Read more »
This comment sounds just like it could be written by a Brit about U.K. usual entries. I do hope we don’t feel this disappointment. Look how France, Italy and now Spain have upped their game – why are U.K. and Germany so apathetic? But ido hope you’re pleasantly surprised and Germany do okay:))
Damn I can feel the frustration you had while reading this. It really is sad and if the broadcaster is not doing anything to do better they will keep doing the same thing. As a person very involved with spanish eurovision culture (I’m mexican) I can say that RTE, the spanish broadcaster, really turned the tables this year with the new delegation team, I genuinely think that thats what the UK and Germany need, bc they have everything to succeed
This is so bad it’s not even funny. Can’t stand his voice either. I hate that vocal fry.
maby you can change i hate by i don’t like it
Well…I hate it.
maby you can change i hate by i don’t like it
because hate is such an ugly word
Maybe the only thing i hate about Eurovision is their fans itself. These comment section.. Ugh i better watch Kreissiradio performance everyday once in my life
He’s cute, the song isn’t that bad, but i just hate the way he sings. I hate cursive singing.
Same hear. I can’t stand it. This is already my last place and I can’t see it moving up in my ranking.
When strangers are coming
They come to your house
They kill you all and say
We’re not guilty.
1944 or 2022
I hated it as soon as he started singing in English.
Before tonight, I wanted Felicia to win but Malik delivered the best package and deservedly won! I think he’ll do well at the final with such an emotional performance 🙂
I also feel relieved as Nico Suave and Team Liebe didn’t win with such a fake and awful song.
I wouldn’t be very optimistic tho, sure he can take Germany out of the bottom 5 but I can’t see it ending up top 15
I don’t think so, either, but they won’t be dead last in Turin, for sure
Watched them this morning when I woke up…now onto the second Serbian semi final.
There’s a good chance that Serbia has 36 songs all better than the German songs this year. 😉
“Oh I come, from a nation, that knows, how to write a song.”
“Oh Germany, where oh where, did ALL GO WRONG?!!!”
Best German entry since Michael Schulte.
Well there’s been much competition since
Since Ben Dolic***
I loved Violent Thing, but he couldn’t sing it live.
Hahaha wow tough competition. I’m also the best singer in my flat right now.
And you’d still be if Emily Roberts moved in.
i don’t think they’ll come last or anywhere close. he gave an emotional performance and locals love those nostalgic vibes. they really chose the least worst of the bunch !
Let’s bet! He’s definitely come last.
Get out.
I am sorry Germany, you received neither points in the jury vote nor in the televote! This song sucks, the staging is a mess!
Du bist echt ne Lachnummer. Eine Meinung zu haben ist vollkommen ok, aber du verbreitest einfach nur HATE. hier und auf ESC Kompakt.
Best out of the bad bunch.
Oh great another one..
Best Choice Germany. Great Song , Great Artist
For me Malik’s song was the best of 6. I ‘m glad he won.
Germany you’ve received…0 points.
Not if Malik proves otherwise.
Well, I’m shocked. He was my nr 2 but Felicia ending 4th? Oh Germany… You don’t learn at all.
felicia’s performance was awful, both her lack of energy and her vocals… i can understand why she lost
She struggles with social ANXIETY. That’s the name of the song!
Ok I’ve watched it right now and I admit Felicia’s performance wasn’t good
Well…… at least, it’s a song. Which is a lot more than what Germany had last year. On first listen, I felt nothing. Let’s see what happens after a few listens.
I don’t want to be rude but I can’t remember a selection so embarrassingly bad in my life. They looked like it’s their first time on a stage with no staging crew to help them and that’s what the broadcast picked AFTER a live audition screening???
You just witnessed how little German television isinterested in Eurovision. No German TV show has such a low production standard. Everything was done quickly, so to speak, to calm the fans down.
Even though he wasnt my favourite I will support him during his journey. I dont really think he will get good results in Turin but at least I dont feel ashamed for beeing german ? the Song is okay.
still a but sad that Felicia didnt win…
Honestly, if Ireland’s 6 song selection seemed like a nightmare to me then this is just a new low. Now it seems very good in comparison. At least they had Brooke, which surely isn’t a winner, but it’s a bop and I love it even more now and it has a chance of qualifying (not 100%, but I still see it happening), but truly this NF had nothing. Germany can thank itself that they don’t have to compete in the semis. Seriously if the same group of people can select Ben Dolic, which imo could’ve been a top 15 even… Read more »
I think this will do surprisingly well with jury.
There we go!
I feel like I am hearing 2 different songs? The studio cut and YouTube video of this song, I really enjoyed! His live version was lacking something, and I didn’t feel it. Hopefully he works with some good people and fixes it up. It’s so strange, beacuse his studio version I would say deserves to be an automatic qualifier as a Big 5 country. But his live version I just watched would be fighting it out with last place. Very confused.
A definite improvement. Congratulations Germany!
Malik’s accent definitely bothers me. He pronounces “hard” like an American and then in the next sentence “fast” like someone from southern England. Neither the American nor the southern English person would say the words as Malik says them, so for me it struggles for authenticity and is quite distracting.
Probably because he picked up some of the accents of his English teachers at school. Quite common for people who learn English to do this. No big deal for 99% of people.
Yes, horrible. It’s quite off-putting for a native speaker. But I think Lena was quirky, so the off-accent kind of played in to that quirkiness. Malik is going for the serious singer-rapper vibe so it doesn’t work. I agree with the comment above that most people in Europe won’t notice. But the inauthenticity point remains.
2010, but what’s another year ?..l
Oh no, a native speaker doesn’t like my accent, what a pity.
Personally,as the only native speakers who technically don’t have to learn any other language but your mother tongue, I find it very off putting when english native speakers criticise others for their accents. I know you likely mean no harm, and I also understand how it CAN be off-putting, but still. Try pronouncing a language perfectly that isn’t your mother tongue and then we can speak. The way you said it sounds very entitled. Despite me understanding, again, that you meant no harm.
I don’t think anybody, native speaker or not, has the right to criticize others for accents. That only comes off as very priviliged.
Singing and speaking in a language that is not your native language is not easy. Let us hear you speak other language before you criticize others.
No one will speak or sing it perfectly so don’t expect anybody to be flawless!
How come Felicia Lu was so hyped but she didn’t even get top 2 on any of the votings? I’m confused…Can anyone from Germany explain pls ahahah
International fans hyped Felicia Lu
German ESC blogs did as well. I’ve got no explanation. Her performance was just as lacklustre as all the others.
The system was broken. She actually recieved WAY more points. Notice how the radio people presented THE EXACT SAME POINTS OVER AND OVER.
very B.o.B.
I think you are too negative about this. Yes, the selection was not so strong, although the songs were quite nice to hear from a radio perspective. For me, Malik had the best song. I was curious or sceptic about how the rap part would turn out live, but he did really well in my view. His voice was on point. There is a lot of potential here, we should not underestimate “Rockstars”. IF they work on staging – this is key – it could actually do quite well. And you can do many things on stage with this song.
