Germany had to decide between six candidates and the viewes chose Malik Harris to represent its country with his song Rockstars. Last time Germany picked its representative through a national final was in 2019.

Eventhough he was not the winner of the online voting, Malik Harris got to the top through the televoting and will represent Germany at this years Eurovision Song Contest in Turin. His warm and melancholic chorus mixed with rapping in the verses convinced the viewers at home during the show. Mael & Jonas won the online voting but were only in third place in the televoting which made them land into the second place overall. Our readers’ fan favourite Felicia Lu got into fourth place.

The vote was decided by public vote alone. These votes were divided into two constituencies. The first is the televote consisting of phone and SMS votes cast on the night. The second is online votes, which had been coming in for 5 days.

Absolute votes

    1. Malik Harris – 208 points
    2. Mael & Jonas – 185 points
    3. Nico Suave & Team Liebe – 157 points
    4. Felicia Lu – 139 points
    5. Eros Atomus – 123 points
    6. Emily Roberts – 53 points

Televote

    1. Malik Harris – 118 points
    2. Nico Suave & Team Liebe – 94 points
    3. Mael & Jonas – 79 points
    4. Eros Atomus – 70 points
    5. Felicia Lu – 65 points
    6. Emily Roberts – 7 points

Online votes

    1. Mael & Jonas – 106 points
    2. Malik Harris  – 90 points
    3. Felicia Lu – 74 point
    4. Nico Suave & Team Liebe – 63 points
    5. Eros Atomus  – 53 points

Ein Beitrag geteilt von Eurovision.de (@eurovision_de)

Malik Harris is a German-American pop singer, rapper and songwriter. Days before he knew that he actually would win the German national final, he said:

“I’d be so proud to represent Germany with my music on an international stage. In Rockstars, I lay my feelings bare, and I can’t wait to perform the song live and share it with a big audience. It’s a song that has incredible personal significance for me and offers a glimmer of hope in these difficult times, while also showing people that we’re all in the same boat.”

Germany had some great interval acts and Eurovision stars on its show on that night. Eurovision 2014 winner Conchita Wurst and old German representatives Jane Comerford and Gitte Haenning sang a medley of various Eurovision songs. After ‘No No Never’, ‘Rise Like A Phoenix’ and ‘Euphoria’ they also sang ‘Ein bisschen Frieden – A little hope’ which made Germany win the contest back in 1982 and is now more relevant then ever in these difficult times.

However, probably the most emotional impact had Jamala singing her song ‘1944’. She entered and left the stage with tears and a Ukrainan flag. During an interview with the show host Barbara Schöneberger she was very thankful to be the big voice for so many Ukrainan people.

Are you happy about the results? Or did you have another winner? Let us know in the comment section below!

By the way: Marvin Dietmann is responsible for the staging of the German entry. I hope it won’t be as bad as in 2017 when Levina sung “Perfect Life”.

Why is there always so much hate for germany? Yeah, Jendrik, Sister and Levina had awful songs, but give this one a chance and stop hating around.

There is some raw honesty about this song and performance that gives me some Roman Lob vibes. Beware of this one, it could be a surprise

I actually like it. Yes it might be unremarkable but it is a very simple sweet song. But what ultimately makes the song is Malik’s sincerity. There is something very honest about him and you believe when he sings. The rap part especially is what sells it. I do think it could do better than previous German efforts, with different staging it could even reach top 15

I just realised Felicia was second to last with televote. I was not surprised because her performance didn’t help but seeing Itunes or Apple in Germany.. and Anxiety is doing worse than other songs like Swear to God so I guess it was another case of a fan bubble thing.

I’m sorry for him, but this screams bottom 5. Even as a radio song this is totally unremarkable, and somehow I don’t get the feeling he’ll be given what’s needed to elevate this on the Eurovision stage

Habe you heard the other songs that has already been revealed? Maybe Rockstars is not the best and most outstanding song, but it has a lot of quality and passion. 2022 is a horrible season, with so many trashy songs. Bottom 5 would be compared to the rest of the songs a shame for europe.

This looks like Malik had his birthday and invited some friends and relatives in his backyard and the surprise of the night was him singing with a power point projection of old pictures behind him. It’s not bad, it’s not amazing, and that’s exactly why he has many chances to come last. The songs that got 0 last year had more impact than this.

Where is the straight-forward speech that german people usually have? It was the most euphemistic to called “Germany 12 points” to that show. That’s called “german diplomacy” hahaha.

Four of the last six German entries failed to score 12 points in total. Malik Harris could make it 5/7 and three televoting zeros in a row. The threat is real.

NDR calling the show like this is just more proof of their total incompetence and unwillingness to learn from their past mistakes.

I’m annoyed that some people now try to lecture germans (or say we are annoying), that we should not mad about the selection when the most positive feedback for Malik is along these lines: “Well with a way better staging it will maybe not be last place!” … Just say it how it is: It’s mediocre and badly executed. Every year we have to hope and pray for pity points and that’s frustrating. We are the richest country in europe and have a big music industy, our broadcaster is one of the biggest best funded in the world. So “bad… Read more »

Damn I can feel the frustration you had while reading this. It really is sad and if the broadcaster is not doing anything to do better they will keep doing the same thing. As a person very involved with spanish eurovision culture (I’m mexican) I can say that RTE, the spanish broadcaster, really turned the tables this year with the new delegation team, I genuinely think that thats what the UK and Germany need, bc they have everything to succeed

Honestly, if Ireland’s 6 song selection seemed like a nightmare to me then this is just a new low. Now it seems very good in comparison. At least they had Brooke, which surely isn’t a winner, but it’s a bop and I love it even more now and it has a chance of qualifying (not 100%, but I still see it happening), but truly this NF had nothing. Germany can thank itself that they don’t have to compete in the semis. Seriously if the same group of people can select Ben Dolic, which imo could’ve been a top 15 even… Read more »

I feel like I am hearing 2 different songs? The studio cut and YouTube video of this song, I really enjoyed! His live version was lacking something, and I didn’t feel it. Hopefully he works with some good people and fixes it up. It’s so strange, beacuse his studio version I would say deserves to be an automatic qualifier as a Big 5 country. But his live version I just watched would be fighting it out with last place. Very confused.

Malik’s accent definitely bothers me. He pronounces “hard” like an American and then in the next sentence “fast” like someone from southern England. Neither the American nor the southern English person would say the words as Malik says them, so for me it struggles for authenticity and is quite distracting.

Craigee_mac

Probably because he picked up some of the accents of his English teachers at school. Quite common for people who learn English to do this. No big deal for 99% of people.

Yes, horrible. It’s quite off-putting for a native speaker. But I think Lena was quirky, so the off-accent kind of played in to that quirkiness. Malik is going for the serious singer-rapper vibe so it doesn’t work. I agree with the comment above that most people in Europe won’t notice. But the inauthenticity point remains.

Personally,as the only native speakers who technically don’t have to learn any other language but your mother tongue, I find it very off putting when english native speakers criticise others for their accents. I know you likely mean no harm, and I also understand how it CAN be off-putting, but still. Try pronouncing a language perfectly that isn’t your mother tongue and then we can speak. The way you said it sounds very entitled. Despite me understanding, again, that you meant no harm.

I don’t think anybody, native speaker or not, has the right to criticize others for accents. That only comes off as very priviliged.
Singing and speaking in a language that is not your native language is not easy. Let us hear you speak other language before you criticize others.
No one will speak or sing it perfectly so don’t expect anybody to be flawless!

I think you are too negative about this. Yes, the selection was not so strong, although the songs were quite nice to hear from a radio perspective. For me, Malik had the best song. I was curious or sceptic about how the rap part would turn out live, but he did really well in my view. His voice was on point. There is a lot of potential here, we should not underestimate “Rockstars”. IF they work on staging – this is key – it could actually do quite well. And you can do many things on stage with this song.
