Eurovision 2022 second rehearsals are wrapping up. Last but not least to take to the Turin PalaOlimpico stage was Germany’s Malik Harris, as the final automatic qualifier contestant to rehearse. He delivered his second run-through of “Rockstars”. How did he fair? Let’s find out…
Germany’s Malik Harris “Rockstars” — Eurovision 2022 second rehearsal
Oliver: Malik really connects with “Rockstars”. His staging is a forgotten wasteland of musical instruments. Dimly lit by soft yellows, the performance space that should be filled with life and joy is instead empty and desolate, with just Malik lamenting in his loneliness. He moves around the stage playing each instrument one by one — first a keyboard with a launchpad, then a single drum, before ending with the acoustic guitar and loop pedal. The expression on his face is an immediate tell that he has an emotional attachment to his song. But it’s lacking energy. In comparison to other entries, Germany’s production is less biggest international musical event of the year, more underground bar open mic night.

What do you think? Did Malik Harris live up to your expectations? Let us know in the comments below.
Worried about this staging, but I’m pretty sure this is going to do much better than people expect, unless they put him 3rd in the running order or something.
This is genuinely one of the worst songs I have ever heard. The whole Eskimo/Electric Callboy thing was silly but it would have been a significantly better entry.
Germany will insist on the “he’s a real musician, you see” card then. Will it pay off with jurors? The good news is that this is actually very different from the rest of the lineup. But I still have problem seeing people picking their phones to vote for it.
I don’t know why there’s people that keep bashing it. The song’s actually nice and likeable, and its staging is intimate and ad hoc to the entry
This will do way better than what most expect, go Malik!
Unfortunately I can expect another ‘sorry, 0 points’ for Malik. Not because the song is bad, but because it is still weaker than the others, abd performing in the 1st half is not going to help it stand out
I like it a lot. Good luck..For me top 10
It’s funny how many people think Germany will come last. Do you guys realize that the press liked his rehearsal more than Italy? Do you realize that his song has grown with the bookmakers and that he’s now in 16th position and with that doing better than many fan favourites like Austria, Romania or Cyprus? He has a very authentic staging, deep lyrics and creates a intimate atmosphere on stage.
If they waste another song for 2nd place instead of Germany, I swear ….
Song is ok but that stage literally screams as a last place
This can squeeze out some jury points actually. Feels radio friendly and he’ll get some love for “being a musician”. Hopefully we won’t see the epicness of last year’s 4 televote zeroes. (Which as a viewer—I lived for). This is not Germany’s Perfect Life blandness. There’s enough here for a couple points here and a couple points there.
Out of the Eurovision-ranking-contest-fandoms atmosphere, the song itself is really not bad at all, I really like and listen to it quite a lot.
Song is OK. It should get SOME points this year.
I feel bad because this has a really good chance of being in the bottom five. However, Malik should be proud of himself. He sounds fantastic, and I actually really like the staging.
I think this staging works perfectly now that the place is completely empty, without audience. I love the loneliness it transmits. Problem is, that won’t be the case in the final.
The song is not the worst of this year but the performance is. I dont feel bad for them, they want to come last.
I am not even sure if we saw the same video, no way the performance was bad!
What are you talking about? He grew massivly with bookmakers to 16th place over many other fan favourites.
They are trying too hard to make it look “authentic” and “raw” with all the instruments and minimalistic staging.”Rockstars” is a generic and formulatic radio pop song, but they want to make it look like some indie-singer-songwriter-art-song or whatever. This won’t work.
except the song wrote the song….the definition of a singer-songwriter song
I actually really love the staging! It really stands out, the one-shot camera is a great idea and it is actually kind of a relief from all those thight cuts, jumps and flashes.
Better than Italy, that’s for sure. Actually, not that bad.
In an average year, Germany would escape from the bottom with this entry. Sadly (for them) it’s a strong year and the performances look amazing.
There’s still hope, but it ain’t looking good…
And why is he 16th with the bookies now? He was around 25th before the rehearsals.
don’t know, ask them
We know who comes last, this year.
They’re asking for it.
are ya DYING for it!??
