In recent years the hosts of the Eurovision Song Contest have spent months debating and perfecting their slogan for the contest. But starting at Eurovision 2024 in Malmö, that responsibility is gone.

The EBU has announced that moving forward, the permanent slogan for Eurovision will be United By Music.

Ebba Adielsson, Executive Producer of the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest for Sweden’s SVT, said that the BBC’s slogan was simply too perfect to let go.

“After Loreen’s win in Liverpool last spring, the whole machinery for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 kicked into action and pretty soon the discussion about the slogan arose. We quickly realized that the great slogan chosen by the BBC says exactly what this competition is about, uniting in music, and we saw no reason to change something that sums up the foundation of the entire event so well.

“It’s great that the EBU has also decided that this is the slogan that will be used by all host broadcasters from now on. Right now, we are in the middle of the process of producing the artwork to match the slogan, which will be revealed soon.”

Martin Österdahl, the Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest, spoke of continuity in a statement released by the EBU.

“The Eurovision Song Contest is more than just a song competition; it’s a celebration of the power of music to bring people together. After over 20 years of using different slogans, and as we approach our 70th anniversary, we feel we have found one that truly encapsulates our brand.

“By establishing a permanent slogan, we will have consistency in our message that music unites us all. It’s the perfect slogan to underline our values of inclusivity, equality, universality and celebrating diversity through music.

“As the popularity of the Eurovision Song Contest continues to grow around the world, we believe using the same slogan annually will help our brand become even stronger.”

The EBU-run Eurovision web site said that the slogan “encapsulates the core values of the Eurovision Song Contest, which has a rich history of promoting diversity, inclusivity, and artistic expression. The slogan resonates with the Contest’s ability to bridge differences and ignite a sense of shared community, regardless of nationality, language, or background.”

And to think we could have had an amazing slogan if Finland had won with “It’s Crazy, it’s Party” for instance because that’s what Eurovision is also about too. Instead, some countries who might have never won or waited a long time to win again wouldn’t be able to have their own chance to put their touch on the slogan.

EBU would probably never allow that. It has to fit any possible song. What if something like 1944 came along again?

Companies pay so much money for a professional to come up with a slogan. I hear people say “next, this will happen, that will happen”. It’s three words people. KFC has been “finger licken good” for as long as I remember. They are not taking away a country’s creativity in how they present the words, just taking away a need to reinvent the same words every year in a different, but same, way.

I don’t know if you’re serious or not, but I guarantee you that all the people demanding Petra hosts every year would be bored of her by year 3. It’s inevitable.

Also, do they not consider Petra in all of this? Maybe she doesn’t want to do this every year. She has a young family, some health issues and perhaps doesn’t want to give up weeks of her life every year for Eurovision.

An *insider* of the event was sort of quoted in an article elsewhere. In my understanding, the jist of it was that the event was becoming more expensive and not very sustainable.

One could speculate that keeping the same slogan could be a “cost-cutting” measure overall but not making things less expensive for the broadcasters.

Axing the junior contest seems like a very good idea. It’s becoming more “adult” every year and differences among participants look starker and starker. The funding should have been a concern for eebbuu – I mean the “show” already *looked* too expensive for the longer term for some time now. They only went bigger every year while seemingly not making their own money for it but depending on member contributions and local organizers and ssponnsors. “Eurovision Again” has shown that fancy staging and whatnot is not necessary but a rather more level playing field can be more fair for all… Read more »

well, one way to cut costs is to ACTUALLY not hire the same people over and over again with having an overproduced event. JESC can be handled in a shorter space of time, even MTVEMAs are done in shorter period of times and within budget and still look good. EBU should look elsewhere to cut.

In 2017, the artwork and slogan costed like €5K or something .

It’s overproduced for a fact. Fans can see that and some delegations have complained about the high costs. And then since it’s that expensive only a few countries were and will be able to host it. “United by Music” sounds total bs under the circumstances. How can people from 40 or so participanting countries be united by music when the mon nie s gaps among their broadcasters face are so huge? Three nights or a night a year watching the event means nothing. Getting to know another country is something else and that regardless of individual travel plans and likes.… Read more »

I stopped following ESC closely after the Nordic countries started draining away all the creativity and kitschiness of Eurovision. They want to turn it into something generic with mass appeal. Forgetting that what makes it popular is its uniqueness. Using pre-recorded vocals ruined it for me. Now it’s turning into another X-facto/Idol/GotTalent

Swedish Executive Supervisor approved an idea from Sweden’s Executive Producer Ebba Adielsson that they’ll use last used slogan and furthermore so will everyone else too.

Will EBU alongside SVT decide how countries choose their theme art, stage and so on if they host? Sweden was quite offensive this year on how the Liverpool stage wasn’t good enough for them, so it wouldn’t be surprising.

The upside of a different slogan for each year is that it helps define a change of theme for the presentation and the branding. The downside of a different slogan for each year is that a change of presentation requires extra effort and costs extra money. And, ultimately, the millions of core TV viewers will only remember the songs and the event and have a good time; the slogan and the branding really only matter to marketers, the media and hyper fans. There is also a political dimension to having a slogan, which I’m sure Eurovision organisers would not acknowledge… Read more »

NEWS: Ebba Adielsson has proposed to EBU that to shorten the lenght of the final, they’re taking down flag parade and replacing it with a short screen introduction of the qualifying countries & big 5. Unless it’s an introduction of country by country, I’m against it. While I agree flag parade must be modified to better fit the new norm, I don’t want it to be a footage where artists’ reactions and whatnot are being showed. There’s too much risk Sweden, for example, will be exposed to that screen more than countries in the Eastern Europe.

This is Sweden we are talking about… Exactly! The country that hosted two of the best editions in the last decade and a country which introduced traditions like the flag parade , while also solving the problems with the old boring voting presentation. We had to wait until 2021 to watch a decent contest after 2016. The thing is that everyone outside of this sad little bubble in this site, can see how important Sweden is to the contest.

2013 sucked. Weak production and forgettable songs. Flag parade just another pointless gimmick that for some reason carried over to future editions.

2016 was okay. Good production, but songwise it is just another 2013 with a few good entries in between. Change to the voting system was definitely needed, so I will agree with you there.

So I can safety say that every contest that Sweden organized other than 2000 was below expectations.

This is just another one of those decisions taken by somebody who really doesn’t “get” Eurovision and the little things that make the community enjoy the contest. You can’t convince me it’s difficult to come up with a unique one-liner for the contest each year or that having a permanent slogan is important for “branding”.
It’s a real shame that we’re losing another aspect of the contest that makes each year unique.

The fact that you don’t like it , doesn’t mean that the people who decided it , don’t get the contest. Actually the issue isn’t that important anyways. But what’s true is that this slogan is indeed perfect and having a permanent slogan, will make the meaning of esc more coherent. Now , do I as a fan like it? No. I liked the little creative tradition every year and that we could identify the edition to the contest. But I can see that this is better for the brand.

Oh, and to explain why…it wasn’t just a slogan. In 2002, host broadcaster ETV was the first to have a theme for the contest, and the slogan came from this…it wasn’t just created on its own. The point of the theme was to tie the stage design, the postcards, the graphics, the scoreboard etc all together in each edition of the contest. With everything thing now looking the same every year anyway, there’s less need for one, but I still a slogan is a good way to differentiate each edition.

Omg, why is this so funny to me :Dd Just saw the video of different slogans throughout the years and when they showed 2024 with same slogan as 2023 I thought it was a joke.. BUT I actually kind of really dig the idea!! United By Music was one of my favorite slogans of the contest and I feel like it really suits the purpose of the contest. It’s kind of a relief that we will have Eurovision’s own slogan from now on and don’t have to worry about the cheap slogans anymore..

I understand why they might choose to keep the same slogan for the entire ESC brand, but they shouldn’t have phrased it as “slogan reveal”. It’s just recognition of the brand, which is a valid arguement, but don’t phrase it as: “omg look what we came up with… nothing! Because last year, we were perfect <3”.
I do feel like the slogan was sometimes the starting point for artwork and visuals during the show, which made any edition recognisable.

“All Aboard” would be a good example of that, at least it had character.

I think it’s a good idea. There would’ve been a moment in 10 or 20 years where the slogan are getting ridiculous or a slogan would be used for the second time after 15 or 20 years. “United by music” is the slogan that sums up the best the contest so why bother to create a new slogan every year. Personally, I never found the utility of new useless slogans every year that are more clichés than ever, like “Show the world”, “Gather the people or any thing that could be done in a few seconds with Chat GPT for… Read more »

Who cares really? It’s only two words, and it’s only an eurofan thing again…and the eurofans and their weird state of mind taking care of the smallest and insignificant detail as if it was the end of the world, it’s ridiculous. The general public doesn’t care of that, the general public doesn’t care of the artwork, the general public doesn’t care about whete is the show, they don’t care about the shape and of the height of the stage or how big the arena is or not. They want to watch a good show with music only, the rest is… Read more »

People, let’s hear your ideas for possible future slogans. Put your money where your mouth is. Maybe the EBU will consider your proposals.

“Music is love – love is music” sounds super nice and they could make amazing visuals too with the two mirroring each other and or such.

“Music means love – love means music” and so on.

“Bring your best note” as in musical note.

If Finland had won this year, “Join the Party” would have been an obvious choice for the 2024 slogan I think.

I wish the EBU could be more truthful. They kept this one because year after year, it gets harder to come up with something new. There is only so many depths to meaningless platitudes. The well has run dry. They were lucky to get twenty years out of it.
