She’s the Polish teen starlet who was set to represent her country at Eurovision 2020. Despite the contest’s cancellation, Alicja Szemplińska, or just Alicja, is not letting that stop her from continuing her music career. The star recently dropped her new single “Gdzieś”, which translates to “Somewhere” in English.

We are still none-the-wiser as to whether our girl from Ciechanow will be given the golden ticket again and participate in Eurovision 2021. But, we do know that she has thrown her name firmly in into the hat.

In the meantime, Alicja is still making music and the Polish beauty is looking for her way in life. The lyrics of “Gdzieś” give us an insight into the star’s current feelings and her journey as both an individual and as an artist.

Alicja tries to find her way in life in the “Gdzieś” lyrics

Sung entirely in Polish, “Gdzieś” is an open and honest song about finding direction in life – a very apt motion in this moment in time.
“Znajdę swoja drogę. Gdzieś, gdzieś”
“I will find my way. Somewhere, somewhere.”

There may be problems along the way, blocks in the road, a pandemic perhaps? But Alicja will find her way, as we all will.
“Wczoraj źle, jutro lżej”
“Yesterday is bad, tomorrow will be easier”

Alicja even tries to go home to find answers but unfortunately, her home is not what it was once before.
“Idę prosto, tam gdzie kiedyś był mój dom wdycham las, mam w ustach smog”
“I go straight to where my home used to be, I breathe the forest, I have smog in my mouth”.

Again, another notion we can all relate to in some way. As time goes on, things change, our home changes and we now do not know where our home is anymore. And yet, we will find a way, we will find our way, somewhere.

Alicja – “Gdzieś”

Alicja does things a bit differently to your traditional teenage artist. Of course she has an incredible voice but she sings about what matters to her. Her future, the planets future – real, serious things. At the age of 18, this is a woman beyond her years and singing about deep topics. Alicja has got a wise head on her shoulders.

The music video for “Gdzieś” sees Alicja briefly looking out and listening to the sounds of the city before the beat kicks in and we are greeted by ladies of a similar age to Alicja, all doing the same. The ladies are  looking out “into the world”, into their world, looking for their own way, their own answers. Later in the song, the girls are all together as a sign of unity. Though you may be looking for your own way, you are not alone, we are in this together.

Lyrics: Alicja – “Gdzieś”

Polish

[Verse 1] Patrzę w niebo, kosmos milczy, chmury mkną
A ja znów
Zataczam krąg
Idę prosto tam, gdzie kiedyś był mój dom
Wdycham las
Mam w ustach smog
Dziwne to uczucie
Już tu nie należę
I wiem i wiem i wiem, to nie to
Po co ciągle wracam?
Czego się spodziewam?
Choć wiem, choć wiem, choć wiem to nie to

[Chorus] Raz, dwa, trzy
Nie mam wielu żyć
Robię zwrot
I doganiam czas

Dziwne to uczucie
Nigdzie nie należę
Mój dom, mój dom, mój dom jest tam, gdzie ja
Czuję zapach lasu
W samym centrum miasta
Mój dom, mój dom, mój dom jest tam, gdzie ja

[Chorus] [Bridge] Tam gdzieś jest moje miejsce
Ja wiem, że lepiej będzie
Ja wiem, że lepiej będzie
Jeśli tylko chcę
Tam gdzieś jest moje miejsce
Ja wiem, że lepiej będzie
Ja wiem, że lepiej będzie

[Chorus]

English Translation

[Verse 1] I look at the sky, the cosmos is silent, the clouds are racing
And me again
I make a circle
I’m going straight to where my house used to be
I inhale the forest
I have smog in my mouth
It feels strange
I don’t belong here anymore
And I know and I know and I know, that’s not it
What do I keep coming back for?
What am I expecting?
Although I know, though I know, although I know not it

[Chorus] One, two, three
I don’t have many lives
I am making a refund
And I’m catching up with time
What is to be
I’ll be fine
Even hail
He cut off the road
I will find my place
Somewhere, somewhere
It is, it is
Somewhere, somewhere
It is, it is
It is somewhere
It is somewhere
It is somewhere

[Verse 2] I look to the sky, the stars will guide me
Where they want
I give up
Maybe I can’t influence anything who knows
Yesterday was wrong
Tomorrow it’s easier
It feels strange
I don’t belong anywhere
My home, my home, my home is where I am
I can smell the forest
Right in the city centre
My home, my home, my home is where I am

[Chorus] [Bridge] My place is over there somewhere
I know it will be better
I know it will be better
If I just want to
My place is over there somewhere
I know it will be better
I know it will be better

[Chorus]
