In August her manager told Danish Eurovision site Eurovisionary that she was potentially open to the possibility of singing at Eurovision for Portugal.

But on Wednesday Canadian singer Nelly Furtado distanced herself from her manager’s comments, claiming she has no idea where the Eurovision rumours started.

As you’ll recall, it was Rose Slanic, Nelly’s manager, who sparked the fire.

She reportedly told Eurovisionary: “If RTP contacts us with further details and a considerable amount of time, we might consider the idea.”

It now seems that she was speaking vaguely and generally, having not actually consulted the pop star.

Following the initial reports we contacted Miss Slanic, but she did not reply to our inquiry.

Born in Vancouver, Canada, Nelly is the daughter of Maria Manuela and António José Furtado, who originally hail from São Miguel Island in the Azores.

She rose to fame in 2000 with the release of her debut album Whoa, Nelly!, which included her best-known single “I’m Like A Bird”.

Subsequent albums included gems like “Promiscuous”, “Maneater” and “Say it Right”, and have resulted in the sale of more than 40 million records worldwide.

Are you bummed that Nelly has poured cold water over her manager’s statement? Which Portuguese pop star would you like to see singing for Portugal?

A shame as Eurovision would boost her career IF she had the right song and prepared a great show on stage.

Anyway, I hope Portugal will do well.

ESC is not only about the audience in the arena, is also about the 200 mil. viewers at home, and big stars also need promotion, otherwise they would not go on tours, and tv shows, each time they have a new album or movie.
But I agree with ESC fans that did not wanted Timberlake there in the first place, it’s something that Europe is very defensive about, especially when is about USA ( I have nothing against Australia, but I hope that the qualified countries will more than 10 in each semifinal when new countries join ).

“If Timberlake needs ESC, Nelly Furtado needs too”

Timberlake didn’t need ESC, but Dreamworks’ new animated feature “Trolls”, coming soon to a theater near you, featuring JT’s smash hit song “Can’t Stop the Feeling”, did.

Also, Swedish connections. As noted by Racal.

It’ll be interesting to see if anyone of similar stature shows up in Ukraine. My money says “no”, but my money isn’t entirely sure.

Seeing the state her career is in, she would need the Eurovision to revive it a bit. I love Nelly, I own her entire discography, and I wish her the best.

It baffles me that people would even consider this as an absolute truth … seriously? Get a grip for heaven’s sake …

@an esc fan: Justin Timberlake doesn’t need ESC, actually he’s so famous that I don’t think he needs anything anymore. He just did it cause his Swedish producers linked him with the Swedish broadcaster… And because he was paid, of course. That’s probably the worst example you could take (sorry), JT is one of the most successful artists on the planet at the moment, singing two songs on the ESC stage certainly didn’t change anything to his career. 🙂 But I totally agree with you about Patricia Kaas: she’s super famous in France and Eastern Europe; she still did it… Read more »

If Timberlake needs ESC, Nelly Furtado needs too, but she does not want to compete. I respect Patricia Kaas, she did it for France.

Weren’t there also rumours in 2005 that she would represent Portugal? But RTP wanted “Amar” instead?

A standard manager-type answer, that. A manager’s job is to help their client make gobs of money. If gobs of money were forthcoming from RTP, then I’m sure she would do it. Which is also something you need to keep in mind when all those quasi-famous acts in the UK (or their management) start going on about how badly they want to do Eurovision. When presented with the BBC’s actual budget and the Contest rules and commitments, they have a strange tendency to lose their enthusiasm. Music is a business, and few internationally viable acts are going to put their… Read more »

@an esc fan: What kind of career does she need to extend exactly? Her career spans two decades, she’s won awards and sold millions of albums, she’s been the official singer of a major international football tournament, … Eurovision has nothing to offer her, even if she took part and did well.

The ESC is a fun TV show to watch, but it has never really allowed anyone to launch a career except ABBA (Celine Dion became super famous thanks to the Titanic soundtrack, even hardcore fans don’t know she’s won Eurovision). But it certainly has destroyed dozens of careers.

It’s too bad but it’s really not a surprise. I don’t see why a confirmed artist who sold several millions of albums would risk being ridiculed on the right side of the scoreboard at Eurovision.

The ESC is too unpredictable. Russian grandmothers and flashy LED dresses can easily get more points than good songs and good artists.

I think that the manager, not only gave the polite answer, but was thinking right, Nelly Furtado might need ESC, just like Il Volo needed even if they were already stars. ESC is big and is good for those artists who want to expand their market, but not everybody is brave enough to take the risk.

I’d just love to see Portugal win and host ESC… I really hope that a new country wins next year!
