Last year Poland climbed all the way to third place in the televote at Eurovision — and they’re definitely hungry to go two better.
On Saturday, during the final of Krajowe Eliminacje 2017, the country crowned Kasia Mos its winner with her song “Flashlight”. Next stop? Eurovision 2017 in Kyiv!
Standing centre stage in a translucent, floor-sweeping skirt and matching Bardot-style top, Kasia embodied blonde bombshell. But this bombshell proved she’s not just a pretty face, nailing note after note and demonstrating the grit in her voice. The live performance gave the song much more texture than the studio version. Showing off her power and adding just the right amount of edge, she almost sounded like a rocker doing opera — albeit with a lot more class.
Kasia should look familiar to those of you who watched last year’s Polish selection. With her song “Addiction” she placed sixth.

Unlike in previous years, Krajowe Eliminacje 2017 included a 50-50 jury-televote split. A jury formed of the opera singer Alice Wegorzewska, singers María Sadowska and Robert Janowski, musician Wlodek Pawlik and composer Krzesimir Debski cast their expert opinions. Power to the people (but to the music professionals too).
Each jury member ranked all of the songs from 1 to 10, awarding 10 points to their favourite, 9 to the second and so on. The televoting followed the same system, ranking each act from 1 to 10. The fan favourite received 10 points, the second 9 points and so on until the last-place contestant, who received 1 point.
Fan favourite Kasia wins
The Polish jury ranked Kasia first — a result that will please our readers.
Ahead of the contest, Kasia topped our fan poll when we asked our readers for their Krajowe Eliminacje 2017 favourites.
The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — placed Kasia in sixth, but plenty of jurors had kind words. wiwiblogger Jason said:
Poland has done relatively well since its return in 2014, but it is high time that the country went all out for the win. “Addiction” was one of the good entries in the national final last year, but the mysterious “Flashlight” is even better. Dark, tense and current, this song is one of many throughout this year’s selections that suffer from the Jamala effect. However, Kasia Mos is a stellar performer and will undoubtedly serve drama and perfect vocals on the night. One to watch.
Polish televoters only ranked Kasia second, instead awarding their top marks to Carmell with her song “Faces”.
Ahead of the competition she won over plenty of fans on wiwibloggs, with our editor William writing:
Her atmospheric entry “Faces” creates a delightful and enchanting atmosphere that moves from light and airy to strong and powerful. The production is soothing but has drive. Best of all, it showcases her soothing voice which is sweeter than caramel on an ice cream sundae. Delish.

Thank you for some other informative blog. Where else may I am getting that kind
of information written in such a perfect way? I have a mission that I’m simply now running
on, and I have been at the glance out for such information.
🙂 >:(

there is another ballad but I feel something inside when I listening this one.
Kasia sang simply, truly, deeply and I trust her. Her power, voice, her magic. She’s sang with heart and emotion.
I’ve got creeps and that will be my choice 🙂 GO POLAND!?
I really liked Carmell’s song better. It’s delicate, and yet memorable, with a nice chorus you can sing along. Kasia’s song is over dramatic and the voice sounds sort of strained live. Well, it’s the jury’s decision really, becuse the general public seemed to know better and voted for Carmell. Pity. I also loved this entry which was not even chosen to participate in the Krajowe Eliminacje – an energetic dance song, with an interesting voice. And the guy knows how to give a good show too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgah4BX8R80
Right now this ESC is for Sweden to lose.
Can you really see this beating Mariette or Loreen?
I don’t think so either.
Can’t view the video – not available in my country :/ Studio version is average.
I don’t like anything.
No idea anymore what kind of voice I´ve heard yesterday….. didn´t impress me…. Hungary´s Joci caught my attention. Until now:
1) France (studio/ video!!!)
2) Hungary
3) Italy
4) Finnland
5) Germany it´s fresh
6) Albania
7) Belarus though the Heyheyheyaaaa nervs
8) UK
9) Switzerland
10) Georgia
11) Spain
12) Poland
13) Malta
Shame Carmell did not win, she’s not famous in Poland yet won the televote. This just shows the power of that song! She has a great career ahead
@SpirK
That’s what I wanted to say, but I couldn’t find the words. Thank you!
Decent entry for Poland and I really like the end of the song with the orchestra!

2017 will be the year of ice queens winning their national or internal selections
Poland, Malta, Georgia, Germany, Finland, Netherlands have elected singers with zero emotional expression…… Singing machines.
Oops it wasn’t the public’s favorite!
Guys, let’s be honest here. This ballad is weak and not interesting at all. Polish migrants will give it a nice boost but apart from that, i can see it having the same fate as Poland 2015 (which was better than this IMO).
This article is about Poland, but if you want, yes Romanian songs are bad and the only one who can save that is MIHAI or is it M.I.H.A.I.?
He has a good power ballad and he knows how to sing it. This is the only good thing I can say about your selection, and it is more than other countries have, why is it not enough?
Well done POland !!! great choice – thats not a ballad, but like a rock song with strong voice, dark climate and best live performance !!!
@Colin Well, it is important to have a good song which goes in the contest, not a good selection but with a no stand-out song. In my opinion Romania could have a very good national final if the jury would have chosen the best songs for the final, but it was a controversial selection, with a lot of outdated and weak choices. I was refering, obviously, to ‘Yodel It’, it’s the only hope for a good placing in Kyiv, but I think it would do well. @an esc fan I don’t see the importance of being experienced when you already… Read more »
LOL @ all the ballad-hate. I hope we’ll get to hear even MORE ballads in eurovision, just to piss some of you guys off 😀
@ Colin
I’m sorry that I was so cruel with Romania, after all is good that every singer is given a chance, is very open everything, but I think only MIHAI is for Kiev.
About Lolita Zero, she is shocking in the first minute, but after that I remember that this is why ESC is successful, it is not … boring … awards …, is craziness in a good way.
If Romania picks ‘We Own the Night’ and Lithuania picks ‘Be Frighten’, I will have my 42nd and 43rd locked. Then, at least I could honestly say there are some horrible songs in the contest. So far, only ‘meh’ ones are Spain and Germany. I like the rest.
@an esc fan – Yeah, I agree. Realistically, Lolita Zero gets a zero out of ten. With her, Lithuania would be guaranteed rock botto 43’rd for me. Buuuut… I remember who my last was. I don’t recall my 7th to last most of the time. Other Lithuanian finalists are just ‘meh’, so I actually kind of root for Lolita just for the memorability sake.
@Charles I get what you’ve been saying this whole time about music in Eurovision, but I think that whoever is capable of getting it, has already got your point. I also believe you are exaggerating a bit. Not every uptempo song is garbage and not every ballad is a masterpiece we should all listen to and enjoy. A music contest needs diversity so we will have both kinds of songs including several other genres. It’s not a matter of genre, it’s the matter of who’s the best cross-genre song. You also have to accept the visual role in Eurovision. It… Read more »
@ Colin and @ AurelianTamisan
Yes, Romania is very weak, just send MIHAI, at least he has experience, and he will know how to make the best of his power ballad. Nothing else is good enough.
I trust SunStroke Project from Moldova, and, don’t laugh, Lithuania – Lolita Zero, she is so bad that is good.
@AurelianTamisan – I’ve heard Romanian songs and I can honestly say they have the weakest NF so far. Yodel It, Petale and I Won’t Surrender are the only songs that could dodge my bottom 5, but I can’t say I’m impressed by them either.
@an esc fan SunStroke Project wouldn’t catch the final in my opinion, the song is too cheap. Upbeat, but not just a simple radio tune, sth with personality, like Sweden in 2015. @Colin No, I don’t consider Italy being the best, I think that here ar ethe betting odds games which are making a lot of manipulation. It would be also a little sad to see this winning, after Il Volo didn’t, a little unfair. To be sincere, here I could be a little subjective, but sth like what Romania will most probably send. Not necessarily Romania, but sth like… Read more »

@ AurelianTamisan : ”High chances to see an upbeat winning this year. Not Italy though.” Why not Italy, he is the best so far! My picks: – Estonia, if they choose Kerli, Elina or Rasmus – Iceland, if they go with Aron Brink Both countries have amazing line-ups and higher quality than most others. Both can be somewhat successful, but are overall mostly underrated when compared to Russia, Sweden, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Greece, ect. Estonia or Iceland winning the whole thing would be a good payback for the recent underrated results of Goodbye to Yesterday, Play, Randajad, Never Forget, Eg A… Read more »
@ AurelianTamisan : ”High chances to see an upbeat winning this year. Not Italy though.”
It will be Moldova, SunStroke Project. I can’t wait a small country to break the spell and win (don’t tell me about Luxembourg 30 years ago when location was only a studio).
I personally prefer Carmell’s song altogether. I was also shocked that Lanberry ranked so low? I assume it was the much more mature jury who just didn’t feel the song? And I honestly never saw/heard the appeal in “Voiceless”, blant and boring, but that is really just my opinion. I liked Flashlight before, too. But as many mentioned before it plain and simple does not have a chorus. But honestly, I was rooting for this song after everyone performed. Kasia has an amazing voice and definitely delivers live! This song is live way better than the studio version. With an… Read more »
Besides being a good singer, I am sure Kasia is now a strong contender for ESC top model 2017. I mean, she’s gorgeous and comfortable with her sex appeal!
Great voice, but more of the same so far! Only France Spain and Italy are different so far.
The song is good, but this type is getting a little cliche. It seems that there are too many of this type and this is making them a little unoriginal. High chances to see an upbeat winning this year. Not Italy though.
@Charles wow you know me so well! Italy is indeed my favourite so far.
My Top 10 so far.
1. Poland
2. Italy
3. Hungary
4. Finland
5. France
6 Malta
7. Switzerland
8. Georgia
9. Albania
10. Belarus
Kasia was great, but my favorite was Caramell… wish Poland luck!
This is actually very good 🙂 While this won’t reach the top 10 in the final, it WILL qualify. HOWEVER. I would like some more pop-songs. But there are SOOOOOOOO many pop countries still left to select. 2016-2017 comparison (because people are all saying that 2017 is bad)
Albania- 2017
Belarus- 2017
Finland- 2017
Georgia- 2017
Hungary- (I would say 2017, but my opinion)
France- 2016
Germany- 2016
Italy- 2017 (my opinion)
Malta- 2016
Poland- 2016
Spain- 2016
UK- 2016 (my opinion)
Switzerland- 2017
So it’s 7- 6 for 2017
One big yawn. 0 points
It seems the Polish people were more mature than the jury last night. The televiewers went for the best song, the jury for the most safe choice.
I doubt Kasia can do much more than just qualifing to the final in kiev.
I must admit that I liked Michal Szpak, and I’ve defended him when he was accused that he only has diaspora by his side, but now I’m disappointed by him, he appears in polish media wearing fur coats and he is seen as a fashion icon.
Don’t make people fashion icons if they wear animals.
I wish luck to Kasia, I like her name, and the song has chances, is too early to tell.
@donut donut: Don’t you have an Italian gorilla to support and give those 12 points to? You waste your time reading my “alleged” attacks and my supposed insulting state of mind … go listen to some great music instead, it doesn’t bite! 🙂
@Chicken Kyiv: … and if viewing figures drop the Eurovision ends too … putting an end to the bs that fans have tried so hard to turn it into … everything else but a true diverse authentic music contest … changing Eurovision into something it’s not has been the laughing stock joke of Eurovision becoming the platform for everything except for what it should be about … MUSIC! If that makes you happy … send a song and bring the whole farm to the stage … chickens should be great backing singers and who knows if cows can play the… Read more »
@Mark: 2000-2009 … uptempo too much uptempo … how easily people forget of their own vomiting issues!
@fikri: Don’t worry maybe in 2018 they will choose another blond Rihanna singing a bside leftover song Sia wrote for Rihanna but got rejected because .. well… Rihanna thinks she’s Bob Dylan … and the uptempo party you so much want will be back into your own stage …. no more ballads to bring the flu or diarrhea :).
I actually quite like this, it gives me LoveWave teas. Hopefully she stages it similarly, or channels the music video into her performance at Kyiv.
Wrong choice…again. but at least better than Malta.
the official eurovision youtube channel just uploaded a video on how successful poland has been since their return… and they chose THIS? they jinxed it. 🙁
“Sky Over Europe” was 100 times better <3
Ok. Stop complaining about your favourite artist not representing Poland because it is decided – Kasia Mos is representing us and HALLELUJAH for that! Another decent candidate was Carmell with her voice but the song sounds like an intro for a TV romance series. Martin Fitch – Nope… His backing vocalists were a huge mistake… So was his song… (3/10) Lanberry – Weak vocals… Do I need to say more? (4.5/10) Isabell Otrebus-Larsson – Good song… But again, weak vocals on high notes. (6/10) Paulla – Great voice, she really has great songs but that one wasn’t among them. That… Read more »
Sky Over Europe almost won?
Oh dear! Not the winner I wanted but was my second choice so not bad.
Ballads, so many ballads.
