Italy’s Francesco Gabbani might be dominating both the bookies’ odds and YouTube views (97 million and counting), but Sweden’s Robin Bengtsson is out on top when it comes to Spotify streams.
The official audio for “I Can’t Go On” has racked up an impressive 11,186,347 streams. However, Robin lags a long way behind his predecessor Frans, who had amassed a whopping 28,942,698 streams at the same stage last year.
The Swede isn’t even the most popular Melodifestivalen 2017 contestant on the streaming service, with Wiktoria’s “As I Lay Me Down” picking up 12,382,960 plays to date.
But what of his all important Eurovision 2017 rivals? How does he compare?

Unsurprisingly, Italy’s Francesco Gabbani is right behind him. With 10,715,855 streams “Occidentali’s Karma” sits comfortably in second place.
The remaining entries have much catching up to do. Of the chasing pack, Norway’s JOWST and Spain’s Manel Navarro occupy third and fourth spots, each with streams in excess of 2 million.
Including the top four, only seven entries have managed to surpass one million streams. Germany’s Levina, Australia’s Isaiah and the Netherlands’ OG3NE also form part of the six digit plus streaming club.
At the other end of the rankings we find Slovenia. Omar Naber has only managed to get a measly 14,860 streams for “On My Way”. In his defence, it was the last of the 42 entries to appear on Spotify.
Eurovision 2017 SPOTIFY RANKINGS: THE Limitations
As with YouTube, ranking Eurovision entries by Spotify streams is not an exact science. There are several limiting factors which we need to keep in mind.
Firstly, in some cases there are multiple versions of the same entry. For the purpose of our ranking, we’ve pulled out the single most streamed version of each song. In some cases that’s the final mix, in other instances it’s the national selection edition.
Even when we apply this ranking method we still have to remember that some songs have been on the site for longer, therefore giving them more time to amass listens.
We also have to consider geographical bias. Spotify is a Swedish company, and therefore is very popular in the country and the Nordic region as a whole. The service is also widely used across western Europe. However, it has yet to arrive in several eastern countries.
This discrepancy is reflected in the rankings — the top ten most streamed entries are all from western Europe and Australia.

Spotify is a Swedish company and everyone uses it here in Sweden so of course our songs will be at the top. This list is not a very good indicator of potential Eurovision winners. Do all competing countries even have Spotify available for use?

Has more logic this list than others that I have seen, this list values ??the songs and not the country it represents, so change the list (here there is no policy or neighbors), in eurovision list yes.
As stated here, Spotify is a Swedish company and almost everyone uses it here. No wonder that he has the most streams, same with Frans last year.

Of course Sweden is high on Spotify….Spotify is a Swedish company, so I can imagine it is the most common music streaming service in the country, in the same way that Ikea is the most common furniture store. Maybe you should look at other music sites such as Deezer and Apple Music and getvan average for all 3?
When you look at Spotify Top 10 only Italy, Sweden, Belgium, and maybe France or Denmark can be in the real Eurovision Grand Final’s Top 10 !

Last year was more interesting becaus than “If I were sorry” was the most streemed song outside it’s own country! Still, that wasn’t enouf!
I hope Robin will win. Its the most current and modern song this year together with Belgium. Robin also has a great performance and I feel like Belgium will disappoint us when it comes to the staging.

Why even bring this up if there are these “limiting factors”? Spotify isn’t a good indicator of anything when it comes to ESC and especially where Sweden will end up.
This is ridiculous, most of the countries in Spotify top 10 won’t even make it to Eurovision Grand Final’s top 10…. That shows how unrealistic this chart is, and no… Robin Bengstton will win when hell freezes over :))))
Again, no. Sweden is Spotify’s second biggest market after the US and he’s getting ads even on this site to stream his song on Spotify. Had Dance Alone been Sweden’s entry, it would be #1 on this list anyway.

SVT entertainment budget > 700 million SEK a year
Cost of Melodifestivalen is reportedly 30-40 million SEK each year
According to ESCToday the event in 2013 was a profitable affair. And as we know 2016 was the cheapest ESC since 2008 at least.
Sweden could afford hosting the contest every year. Period.

Even if thery couldn’t afford it they wouldn’t mention it in public. Christer Björkman once said that the only demand from SVT is to make “every year a winning one”.

That Gabbani is only 500K away, actually, is an impressive feat and a good omen for him rather than for Bengtsson.

Twice is a lot. Only Sweden, Denmark and Ukraine have managed to do that. But I’m referring to good placings: Sweden has been 3rd, 1st, 13th, 3rd, 1st and 5th in the past years, and it seems that this year it will be something like that.
One of the reasons some of these songs have low streams might be their availability in different countries. There’s a whole handful of songs that I can’t listen to on Spotify from the US.

I don’t think Slovenia wasn’t the last song on Spotify. Only about 2 days ago, the Macedonian song “Dance Alone” was FINALLY put on Spotify. I think that this was the last ESC 2017 song on Spotify.
As the person responsible for curating our Eurovision 2017 playlist, I can assure you that Macedonia was on Spotify almost a full week before Slovenia. Also, as some might have noticed on Twitter, I was paying particularly close attention to when Dance Alone would arrive 🙂
Sweden will get a spot in top 3 that’s for sure, but will Robin win? I don’t think so. Don’t get me wrong, I will gladly come back to Sweden next year in case of his victory, but unfortunately “I can’t go on” won’t accumulate enough jury and televote votes to secure itself a win his year. So, in my opinion, Gabbani will be crowned as a well deserved winner on May 13th and Bulgarias Kristian will end up getting a very close second place. Considering 99% of Wiktoria’s streams will have come from Sweden, it’s probably safe to assume that around 80% of Robin’s did, leaving him with 2 million, maybe 3 million streams max from elsewhere – not bad going at all but it doesn’t really tell any story.
I would imagine Francesco has a higher percentage and number of non-domestic streams than Robin though it’s impossible to prove!
When you see Norway,Spain and Germany in the top 5 you can only help but imagine how unrealistic these streams can be to predict a winner.
Spotify is not quite popular in Italy as it is in Sweden. To be honest I’m surprised that Francesco has more than 10 million streams.
Francesca’s Nessun Grado di Separazione was #1 in Italy after San Remo last year (February), however it only got 1 million streams on Spotify after Eurovision 2016 in May (if I’m not wrong).
