Frans represented Sweden on home soil at Eurovision 2016 with “If I Were Sorry”, which became the year’s breakout commercial hit. Now, he’s back with his new single “Amsterdam” and paying homage to the Dutch capital city.

In this new track, the Swedish star sings about having his life on track. Nevertheless, something is still missing. Perhaps it’s the love from his loved one, as he sings: “So give me your love baby, just tell me you want me baby”.

Frans uses Amsterdam as a metaphor for his own mind. Maybe because he sees Amsterdam as a city of freedom. But, the star could also be high on love.

The lyrics to this song are rather cryptic, but “Amsterdam” is still a banger. It combines all the elements we are used to from Frans. Paired with the chill vibe and his unique London accent, Frans has once again created another successful single.

A few weeks ago, Frans flew to Amsterdam to record the music video. It has a retro atmosphere to it owing to the Instagram-like filter put over many of the shots.

In the video, the Sopot International Festival champion visits many famous sights of the Dutch capital, such as Dam Square, Vondelpark and the characteristic canals – accompanied by his guitar. Frans visibly enjoys his freedom in Amsterdam and everything else the city has to offer. The video ends with Frans performing “Amsterdam” in front of a very enthusiastic crowd.

Frans – “Amsterdam”

After Frans’ participation in Eurovision, he initially stepped out of the spotlight. The star later revealed that the main reason for his hiatus was so he could focus on school. He promised his fans that he would dedicate himself fully to music once he graduates: “After that I will be able to pursue the music career I’ve started”.

The Swedish singer kept this promise. After leaving high school, Frans has released new music including the singles “One Floor Down”, “Snakes” and “Do It Like You Mean It”. These songs have been well received by his loyal fans and now have hundreds of thousands of streams on Spotify. Naturally, Frans will want to continue this success with his new single “Amsterdam”.

Lyrics: Frans – “Amsterdam”

(So give me your love, baby
Just tell me you want me, baby)
Woo!

I’m a free man in a captive soul
Chained to a doorknob in a house I stole
Ate too late, out of control, yeah
Yeah, I paid my dues, still I’m on patrol

But yes, I’m fine, oh I’m good
Everything’s in line and as it should
But are you with me, fam?
My mind is Amsterdam

So give me your love, baby
Just tell me you want me, baby
So give me your love, baby
Just tell me you want me, baby

From the ruins that have gone to waste, woo!
To the skylines that always cease to amaze me, oh-oh

Yes, I’m fine, oh I’m good
Everything’s in line and as it should
But are you with me, fam?
My mind is Amsterdam

So give me your love, baby
Just tell me you want me, baby
So give me your love, baby
Just tell me you want me, baby

Where I go, where you go, where we gone
Amsterdam
Where I go, where you go, where we gone
Amsterdam
Said where I go, where you go, where we gone
Amsterdam
Said where I go, where you go, where we gone
Amsterdam

Said where I go, where you go, where we gone
Amsterdam
Said where I go, where you go, where we gone
Yeah, Amsterdam
Said where I go, where you go, where we gone
Amsterdam
Said where I go, where you go, where we gone
Yeah

You know I’m fine, yes I’m good
Everything’s in line and as it should
But are you with me, fam?
(Said where I go, where you go, where we gone)
My mind is Amsterdam

So give me your love, baby
Just tell me you want me, baby
So give me your love, baby
Just tell me you want me…
So give me your love, baby
Just tell me you want me, baby

Pity he didn’t released it just before or in the middle of summer; this could’ve been a big summer tune over here! Still like it, though, and hopefully it gets enough airplay to become an ‘after summer tune’. Here’s to hoping!

Frans is such an underrated artist. This song amazingly catchy, like the singles before like ”Snakes” and ”One floor down”. He has such a unique voice and charm.

According to the Dutch constitution Amsterdam is the capital.

The Hague is the seat of the Royal Family and the politics (First Chamber/House of Lords/The Senate, the more important Second Chamber/House of Commons/House of Representatives, the cabinet (the ministers of political parties that create laws) and the government (cabinet + head of state, i.e. the king). I can understand why you reckon it the capital, and it is often regarded as such. But Amsterdam is by law the capital. It is there when the Royal Family have weddings, a crowning, celebrations or inviting foreign heads of state (Palace on Dam Square/Paleis op de Dam). To be short: the Netherlands… Read more »

Amazing song just like “If I Were Sorry” was. I wonder if it was thought for ESC 2020 as long as it lasts 3 mins and is called Amsterdam. But since Melfest doesn’t allow its participants as far as I know to make the songs public, I guess even if he had submitted it, he must have been rejected.
I think it would be a cool idea for Melfest organisers to invite him to perform this song at one of the interval acts of Melfest, only changing Amsterdam to Rotterdam in the lyrics, luckily it’s not that hard.
