A track straight from the heart and onto the stage, singer-songwriter Charley has released her autobiographical song, and entry for Eurovision – Australia Decides 2022, “I Suck At Being Lonely”.

As a new addition to Australia’s growing pop music community, Charley’s discography, and her Eurovision entry, is 100% of herself. More than just a song, “I Suck At Being Lonely” is evidently a cathartic release of emotion post-breakup. A her subtle vocal melody is supported by a gentle instrumental build, with Carly’s layered vocals showcasing a simple, yet very expensive, production. “I Suck At Being Lonely” sucks you into Charley’s trauma and hooks you in hard.

Charley releases “I Suck At Being Lonely”

“I Suck At Being Lonely” is written by Charley and Jim Alxndr (writer for Carly Rae Jepsen, Ruel and Jack Garratt).

Speaking about her process of writing the song, Charley said:

“I wrote ‘I Suck At Being Lonely’ two and a half years ago with Jim Alxndr while I was in LA on a writing trip,” Charley said in a press statement. “The session that day turned into a therapy session as I was feeling so heartbroken over my ex.

“Everywhere I went I thought about him, especially at night when it was raining and I’d catch a cab home from a party, all alone… we [Alxndr and I] both cried so much, turning the recording into one of the most cathartic experiences of my life.”

Charley joins other entrants, duo Isaiah and Evie Irie, pop stalwart PAULINI, the fabulous Seann Miley Moore, Perth’s metal quintet Voyager, singer-songwriter Jude York, avant-garde performance artist Sheldon Riley, six-piece girl group  G-NAT!ON, charismatic pop star Andrew Lambrou, powerhouse entertainer PAULINI, Tiktok wildcard Erica Padilla and multi-media artist Jaguar Jonze. Eurovision – Australia Decides 2022 airs on February 26 on SBS.

People had already speculated this to be a contender, but hearing it… I just don’t really see it. Maybe I’m an outsider but maybe this’ll grow live. As for now, it’s a no for me

I am concerned that she doesn’t have tv experience.

This is a pretty one and I believe it can be a grower with the right atmosphere. The production of the track is top-notch, the arrangement on its last third amazing, especially when the strings come up.

Australia Decides’ lineup keeps shaping up nicely, Charley, Jaguar Jonze, Jude York and Voyager all have good songs.

I agree with those saying it’s not something we haven’t ever heard of, but I love the fact that it’s self-written and that you can notice that right away! Also, it doesn’t have to reinvent the wheel to be liked, sometimes keeping it simple is fine 🙂

Mmm, I mean, it’s an OK song, but would I be seeking it out to put it on? No.

Theyre even worse than heat one, which is probably a good thing for cornelia because none of those songs could challenge hers. Except maybe Liamoo just for the perks of being a good looking guy with a Eric Saade style song

Sounds fresh and good. Has this kinda indie (?) vibe to it.

German songs are so boring that even the wiwi team forgot to write an article about them. Totally understandable

I expect nothing after last year’s BS. NDR is rubbish on all fronts, not just in ESC. It was nice of them to make a 3 min video of all songs though because none of these deserve a full listen.

Oh this is beautiful.

That build up is everything. This really could come to life even more on stage.

Goosebumps all over. It sounds like she’s telling me a story I can relate to. This can have a MOMENT with the live performance. My winner for Australia Decides so far.
