Review: REDDI – “The Show”
Lucy: I’m a rock-at-Eurovision fan for sure, and was so excited when Måneskin won last year to get some great examples of it come through this year. Sadly, “The Show” isn’t that. It’s not bad at all, but it isn’t spectacular. The start is too slow to get you ready for the next section of the song – by the time it comes, it’s a bit like “oh ok, finally”. It has a throwback energy to it, but it’s not quite being sold that way. I just can’t quite find the identity of the song. It’s pleasant to listen to, but it just doesn’t excite me.

Robyn: In theory this should be a good song, a high-energy rock number, with more than an echo of The Go-Gos. But “The Show” isn’t quite working. The song takes too long to get going, with the subdued piano intro dragging for more than one whole minute. And then once the rock kicks in, it quickly zooms up to ten, which doesn’t leave the song anywhere else to go. The DMGP performance was a little messy, with the needs of a slick choreographed TV performance clashing with the reality of performing a live rock song — but the backing track in Turin may improve things, letting the performance flow more.

Oliver: On first observation, this fashion and music seems dated. Musically, “The Show” is nothing new. But the wheel needn’t be reinvented, and the energy REDDI deliver is timeless. With hints of Splendora, Hole and Joan Jett, the Danish four-piece’s huge percussive beats and sensational guitar licks capture all the best parts of ‘70s glam rock and ’90s girl power, tying everything together in a neat family-friendly package. This is the jolt of punk rock energy Denmark needs to stand out from the crowd.

Natalie: I love this but I so desperately don’t love this. I like some 80s throwback sure, but next time, ask Raylee how to do it. They’re trying so hard to bring in some creative and fun but it doesn’t land, mainly because it feels so forced, repetitive, and dated. I love a spunky girlband, truly, but they need to go even harder I think. Go even more extra, ladies! Trust me!

Ron: Rock, and even pop rock, are not really my cup of tea. However, this is quite a decent entry that, for me, sits in the middle of the field of Eurovision 2022 songs. I love these girls and their charisma. They do manage to convince me with this song and performance – it feels quite authentic. When Siggy starts her solo on the piano, I do feel her emotions while she sings. I enjoy the girl power vibe of this performance and even if it’s not among my favourite songs I still don’t suffer while it’s on. Well done girls and keep up with the show.

A strange combination of elements that end up in a messy piece of music. Denmark will stay in semis again unfortunately. 3/10.
If this is considered high energy then I have the speed of Superman. This song reminds me so much of another composition which I still cannot out my finger in. Sorry doesn’t do anything to me.
31.Denmark – Seems like an okay piano ballad transformed into female pop punk. I mean I like the contrast, but I’m not sure if the parts alone are special enough. I think I enjoy the ballad more than the punk.
I’m assuming this is a NQ because of all the hate and the odds, but I can’t fight myself and shake my head to this song… I would say this and Slovenia’s are my guilty pleasures this year… 8,75/10
In a semifinal full of slow songs sung by women and high energy acts performed by groups, ironically REDDI is serving a little bit of both. It could be the Danish differential, especially if they manage to stage it with the element of surprise. But both parts of it sound a little pale to my ears when compared with the opposition. What can help here is how it sounds unpretentious. It has a solid hook and the girls have their charm. Especially the drummer, who is more than half of “The Show”. 5/10
I would’ve liked either “version” better by itself.
This is a pop song trying to be a rock song. This will quite likely miss qualifying in its attempt to compete with the other rock songs that ARE rock songs.
8/10 YEP! This is one of my 2 guilty pleasures this year (and Denmark was also my guilty pleasure last year…). I am a sucker for anything remotely considered rock at ESC and this is no exception- love that we have a female band!!!!
Imagine this qualifying and Lithuania getting NQ. Worst case scenario on steroids

This is painfully mediocre, but I can’t help but like it. It’s absolutely my biggest grower so far, I just can’t stop singing the pre-chorus around the house, it’s very catchy and an easy sing-along. That said, it’s not the most captivating and that guitar solo is dated and cliché, but the care-free vibe of it all just makes me enjoy it. 8/10, it managed to sneak it’s way into my top 25 and so I hope to see it in the final.
This is one of the song’s I’m probably going to be harsh about. It’s in my bottom three. Denmark continues to be a country that just wants to be at the bottom of my ranking every year and really tries its best to get there. I don’t think any part of this song is done well but I’ll explain a few specific issues for me. Firstly, I find the opening of the song mediocre but not offensively so. I was waiting for you to unleash the review of Denmark, to see all the exact issues you have with it. Reading it, I agree with all of it. It feels too vanilla. You made a good point about vocals being middle of the road at best at DMGP. Even if I see that they made a better impression at some of the pre-parties. Thus, I left that segment lie so far. I love this song despite how “dated” it sounds. The message is a big middle finger to the people who always brought you down, who never supported you. It’s the kind of song I’d dedicate to teachers and parents of kids who want to follow their dreams.
DENMARK – Here we have some good ideas on paper, even if the finished product feels underwhelming. The style switch from a minute of balladry to two minutes of punk / soft rock is a creative choice, but I find each of the segments a bit unpolished. The sudden shift might lose some listeners, while those who’d appreciate the more energetic sound that comes later might already be zoned out. Your analysis of the problems the shift in the middle of the song causes is spot on. I agree perfectly with it. In my opinion this idea could work if it also had a better instrumental to go with it. This one’s instrumental is just bland and uninteresting, which makes both parts of the song forgettable. The vocals in the first part are also unappealing for me and the first part seems too old-fashioned to attract even people looking for a cute ballad in this song. We quite agree on this song, Thanos. It’s just forgettable. It aims at being several different things, but feels only half-way there in all of them. I see that some people are still liking it, but with the highest rating being around a 7, I can see it falling under the radar.
Dated but cute punk entry, it is actually a nice song that i just wouldn’t personally have playing on repeat. My 32nd place, with 6.5/10.
It’s growing on me….
The song is very dated, it sounds very alike Ireland’s entry from 2009…which was 13 years ago. This is 2022!
I think this will surprise people and think it might just about qualify and with songs before and after it not being defo qualifiers, if Austria performing after them isn’t good live that could help this songs chances.
It gives me similar vibes to Denmark 2011 “New Tomorrow and Finland 2014 “Something Better” and both of them did quite well with juries and I think they will really respect this.
I understand where you are coming from, but for me both Something Better and A New Tomorrow are much, much better songs. What connects them is a young adult band and a somewhat rocky sound.
Completely agree with you about those 2 being much better songs and that’s probably why used them as comparison as I cant think of many pop-rock bands since Softengine in 2014.
It just feels it has been written off by a majority about qualifying but i think it could get a 9th or 10th in the semi and then probs 20-25 in final.
This is so underrated. I admit it does take a while to get going but once it does, it’s so good. I think they will qualify 7/10
I was totally caught by “The Show” since the very first minute. I’m a rock, pop-rock, indie fan; this could even tick the glam spot. I get what you say but I do enjoy the first minute with that intimate moment to just go all out for the remaining 2 minutes. I find her voice super special too: deep and a kind of raspy at times, though this kind of voices are not loved by everyone. This song suffers a little bit from “meh syndrome,” which I just made up a few weeks ago as a way to explain what most of ESC 2022 is suffering from. The emotional first minute of this song with a piano is interrupted by classic rock/early punk with the band, and is then left with little space to go after that. There is a mandatory electric guitar solo with no oomph, followed by a tone-raise key change. There are actually a lot of songs towards the bottom of my list that are suffering from a case of the mehs.
Honestly, I don’t even think Denmark aspires to meh this year. I’ve got it lower than meh.

Denmark – This is the other song that I have joint last in my ranking. I have to agree with Robyn that the piano bit at the start goes on for way too long – I think if songs weren’t limited to being 3 mins long it would have been fine but it drags on so bad that I completely lose interest. I do however appreciate a female rock band, but otherwise it’s a pass. 2.5/10
I still don’t know how they’d make that opening work though. If it were any shorter, we’d be like, “What’s the point?”

This is my last place of the year, I dislike this even more than Bulgaria and Moldova. Just… seriously Denmark? This is honestly more reminiscent of the god-awful early 2000’s entries, rather than something actually from 2022, and the amateurish vocals and staging do not help at all. We know Denmark is too lazy to change things so they’re stuck with a horrible package of things that I can’t bring myself to listen to. I’ve got it just above one of the songs that you’ve mentioned but honestly, that’s more due to how much I absolutely despise that other entry more than anything good about this Danish entry.

That’s true, but luckily Denmark doesn’t have a 100% qualification record. They rightfully failed to qualify last year, so I hope the same thing happens this year, although they wouldn’t even deserve to be borderline
21. Denmark – Reddi – The Show – 7/10 – a decently delivered if a little predictable quiet/loud rock song. The guitar work could be heavier to generate a deeper impact and to match the power in the spiky drum work. The vocal is nice and overall the song is well performed with the beginnings of a groove that could have scored more highly if it was more impactful in its musical depth and lyrical content.
You definitely like this a lot more than I do! May I ask if the use of the word “spiky” is a positive or a negative thing, as the actual drumming is the one remote saving grace of this entry for me.

Spiky is good. I was attempting to refer to its sharpness and the fact that for me it really drives the song along with a lot of energy. I am not totally enamored with this song, a lot of the adjectives I used (eg, nice) are because I am not too excited about it which is not great as this is a type of song that the listener should be excited about (especially the second half). The first part of the song till 2nd verse is maybe even useless to be included. Would work more if the last chorus was calmer and the first 2:30 minutes were upbeat. Very bland for a rock entry. Denmark has given up?? Possibly. Can’t see how this is going to qualify even with the help of Nordics.

33. Denmark: My problems here lie mostly with the first part of the song which I don’t like at all and with the simplistic lyrics. The second part although more upbeat and with a rock vibe is also uninteresting and bland, albeit better than the first part. This song is fine but this is yet another mediocre entry from Denmark and a far cry from their golden age of 2008-14 (when they qualified every year and made it to the top 15 each time, except in 2012, much like The Netherlands now). The thing with mediocre songs at ESC is that only the 10 first songs in each country’s tops end up getting any points. So if a song is mediocre and finishes outside of the top ten of every country’s top it gets zero points even if it’s not by definition bad but not impressive enough. Eurovision is all about standing out from the pack in one way or another. And like you said Denmark this year unfortunately is just okay. So I am not counting this as a qualifier as of now.
That’s my theory about the UK getting zero last year and being put near the bottom by almost every single country. “Embers” was a good pop song but there was nothing “WOW” about it. It was just there. Denmark is one such song this year (although it should get a handful of votes from friends and neighbours like Iceland, Norway and The Netherlands), among others.
