After three semi-finals we were down to the last 9 acts in Norway’s Melodi Grand Prix 2024. After several hours of Norwegian spectacle, Gåte emerged victorious with “Ulveham“.

Among tonight’s finalists we found Eurovision alumni KEiiNO and Margaret Berger, but the bookmakers’ favourites for now are folk-rock group Gåte – who had to rewrite their lyrics during the week, because some of them were taken from an old Norse poem.

Tonight we found the winner, and the decision was split between an international jury counting for 40% of the result, while the public vote counted for 60% of the result.

While Eurovision 2019 stars KEiiNO managed to rock up the most votes from the international juries, Gåte manage to earn a big set of points with the televoting public. Only six points separated the two acts in the end!

Running order of Melodi Grand Prix 2024 final

  1. KEiiNO – “Damdiggida”
  2. Annprincess – “Save Me”
  3. GOTHMINISTER – “We Come Alive”
  4. Ingrid Jasmin – “Eya”
  5. MIIA – “Green Lights”
  6. Margaret Berger – “Oblivion”
  7. Dag Erik Oksvold & Anne Fagermo – “Judge Tenderly of Me”
  8. Gåte – “Ulveham”
  9. Super Rob & Erika Norwich – “My AI”

I feel like this SHOULD be something I’d love. It has a cool metal/rock sound with traditional Scandinavian string sound mixed. However whenever I try to give it a shot, when I tell myself “I will LOVE it this time!” or “I’ll finally see what everyone else is seeing!” I just start skipping through it or turning away all together. I think the issue is just how overwhelming it is. You have to be in the right mood, which sure could fit for Eurovision but outside of that context I just skip it. Maybe with different staging, better camera cuts… Read more »

I’m so happy that this has won a very competitive MGP and will represent Norway in Malmö! It has a unique mystical feel, combining Nordic folk and rock, and the performance is absolutely captivating. Sure, it will divide opinions and I know that not everyone will like this but it’s impossible to go unnoticed and this is a good sign. I’m very confident that this will do very well, probably with both votes, and for me it’s an early contender for the victory. Best of luck to Gåte!

Combine Nordic folk with the caranberries and then let someone try the song in a contest for primary school. She didn’t win. But apparently she went to ESC anyway. Maybe people who don’t understand the language might enjoy the “mystery” in the language barrier.

Norway! I’m in LOVE with this performance. From even the semi’s, this gave me CHILLS.

Love Keiino – but this one I stopped what I was doing and was so drawn in. It’s beautiful. It personally gave me top 5/winners vibes, but I am more into rock in this form. I hope Europe can enjoy as much as me and give them a fantastic spot.

MGP was such a wonderful show, and they were all great options in their own way – well done!

No! People who are speaking out against Israel aren’t doing so in favour of H4m4as you blind fool. At least in Norway there has been several demostrations for a boycott outside NRK and talks about this in the media. As far as I know, a boycott of the Olympics in August has not even been mentioned in Norwegian media.

So much money involved in the Olympics the sportsmen and women are not willing or expected to boycott while the musicians are more expected to boycott the ESC?

Gratulerer Norge! For both the show and preselection, and the winner! Gaate deserved to go to Malmö. It’s bold, powerful, storytelling-based, with Norwegian language and folk elements, FANTASTIC! Now, if this is going to win Eurovision or flop, that’s another story. If it manages to go through the televote-only semifinal, it will go far. My concern (dread the possibility but I feel it’s a scenario) is that it may not be perceived for what it is with the first listening (when the masses hear it for the first time). Last year I did not like Spain’s entry for a reason… Read more »

I agree that this entry from Keiino was the weakest of their three entries. And the botched high note didn’t help things. But Ulveham is not going to make Top 5 as is. I wouldn’t be shocked if they don’t even qualify. The song was a mess. But, there is still time to clean it up. Start with diction.

So happy to see Gåte winning, and I am very proud as a Norwegian! We are sending one of our BIGGEST bands ever in a genre that really represents Norwegian culture. People not from Norway will not understand how big this is for us! I know it is a risk to send a song in Norwegian again, but I rather be daring one year (especially when it is this high quality) than to play it safe once again! It will for sure qualify and then I dont care about the final result in the final!

I love that we’re taking a risk. Keiino wasn’t going to win Eurovision anyway, not with Damdiggida. Sorry. So I don’t really care if people think they would’ve done better. I have no attachment to getting another 6th-7th place. Also, ESC juries and MGP juries are different beasts. Like, half our jury countries were Nordic – but there’s a lot of juries that won’t ever, ever get behind a party song called “Damdiggida.” And like we saw with Alessandra last year, you can do very well with the MGP jury with a song that’s not actually jury-friendly at all, then… Read more »

The worst part for me was seeing Alexandra just before Keiinos points were announced. She knew they lost just by a tiny bit, and I think they really care a lot about Eurovision and the fans, and didn’t want to disappoint them. Seeing how active they remained since they participated, they seem like one of the few acts that really care about the Eurovision scene and love it so much, even 5 years later. Gate for me seems like they just see it as a one time thing, especially since they just shortened a song they had already for MGP.… Read more »

But it’s not about caring about what happens after Eurovision, Its about delivering the goods FOR Eurovision. And that’s exactly what they did. Whether they have longevity after the contest is unimportant. They just have one goal, and that is to get Norway their best result and keep that upward trajectory going.

Keiino will be back with a much better song than this one. It was the weakest of the three songs they’ve submitted, so it was never going to win at Eurovision. Plus they also have a great career away from the ESC so they’re winning at life.

I know some Keiino fans mourn that they would’ve won with 50/50, but if you think of the long-term health of MGP as a competition, I think this was very good PR for the 40/60 split. If Keiino had won the jury, then the show, without winning the televote, Norwegians would’ve been soooo pissed. Many here hate that we introduced a jury to MGP at all. And NRK has been very open to changing the format to respond to people’s complaints. If Keiino had won that way, we probably wouldn’t have had a jury again for another decade. So if… Read more »
