Review: Slimane – “Mon amour”
Youyou: What a masterpiece! The lyrics of this song are so beautiful (as is the French language) and the French are really good at telling a story with their music. Even though this song was released very early in the competition, it’s been on loop for a long time because Slimane has the perfect voice and he is one with his musical storytelling. As always, I’m sure that the French delegation will produce a perfect live stage performance, and the final presentation of this song will surely allow France to do very well in this competition.

Scarlett: “Mon Amour” follows a classic French formula, and France does classics well. No one can deny that Slimane is a captivating performer with powerfully emotive vocals. He delivers this heartfelt ballad just the way it needs to be delivered, with a raspiness that comes out at just the right moments. Nothing more, nothing less. I can’t see “Mon Amour” topping the scoreboard, but it is quality music and that is enough. If the staging involves a thousand Eiffel towers, then so be it.

Georgia: While it may initially come across as a cliché, “Mon amour” gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. Slimane’s voice is incredibly strong and captivating. The song takes you on a journey to magical places and stirs up a lot of emotions. The harmonic resonance between the French language and the song’s melody adds an extra layer of depth, enhancing its overall charm and appeal. Overall, it’s a moving and unforgettable experience thanks to Slimane’s talent and the beauty of the music. This song is sure to impress the juries.

Jonathan: Slimane is a very skilled singer and a strong jury result is perhaps almost guaranteed. Yet, there is something about “Mon amour” that feels slightly calculated. It is very easy to predict where the song is heading; thus, despite the peaks and troughs Slimane provides with his passionate delivery, the journey through the three minutes as a listener is somewhat underwhelming. Staging elements could help here and provide nuances in the song. But at the moment, it’s not fully connecting to my heart.

“Mon Amour” is in B minor. It is a very serious-sounding song, with a structure that is very precise and deliberate. There are a lot of things that this song is “not” – It is not unexpected or ambiguous, it is not part of the “nouvelle chanson” movement, nor is it particularly groundbreaking in any way. Mon Amour and Grito are my big favorites this year. They deserves a lot of points and a high position in may. I hope that I can vote for Portugal in the big final. So I can vote many times for both of them.
Am I the only one who thinks this song is derivative and overrated?
While the song itself is nothing groundbreaking, surprising or impactful, the live performance rockets the whole entry to the sky. I’m not into this kind of ballads (and that will explain my score but the pack is very solid and Slimane is a seasoned and charismatic performer. The bridge a cappella afar from the mic will become one of the moments of the night for sure. With just a few male ballads, I predict a top 5 placing with the juries. Take the lyrics of this song and transfer them to the relationship between France and Eurovision and it fits perfectly. There are different layers in these lyrics, definetely.
Las year Due Vite was so boring but juries loved it so this one might have a chance for top 10 too.
What are you talking about, Due Vite is one of the best songs and performances as of recently. It was also equally loved by the public with 174 points as opposed to 176 from the juries.
Song reviews will be song reviews, but his voice? His style? His charisma? Those are full 20/10.
November 2023: I am “mi-figue, mi-raisin” when “Mon amour” gets its release. The excitement of the Slimane’s announcement is followed by a form of disappointment probably impaired to an excesive expectation and a high standart singing back catalogue. To me, having him as a representative of France alongside Vitaa with their title “Avant toi” in 2019-2020 would have been the absolute dream. I feel people are forgetting about France because they released so early but I think this can get top 10. Very emotive, amazing vocals and has potential to even win the jury vote
There are so few songs this year with real emotion in them that this stands out so far ahead of everyone else for me.

There is no depth in this ballad for me. I barely remember any of the very basic French I used to speak and yet I understand the entire lyrics of this without translating them. That equals extremely basic lyrics and very lazy songwriting. But lazy songwriting often works in Eurovision.
It’s very stereotypically French and quite an attempt to replicate Marco Mengoni’s success. I expect it to do well.
True, there is nothing groundbreaking here, but it is not the same ‘Ode to French Stereotypes’ they have been sending for most of the past decade.
I like this song, the build to the final chorus is great. I notice in live performances they’re starting to do more acapella versions of that final chorus that completely kill the power of the song and ruin all the build up to me and make the first 2 minutes less meaningful. Yes his voice is fantastic but I’m really hoping they don’t do that during Eurovision itself because as excellent as his voice is, this song really doesn’t need to have an acapella section in place of half the time of the dramatic conclusion the whole song builds to.

I dont like this. I’m always a fan of a dramatic emotional ballad. But I don’t know… maybe he’s too angry for my liking. I just cannot connect to this in any way. Melodically it’s well composed. Just not for me

FRANCE – While everyone else was busy picking out their representatives or organizing their national selections, France has already released their entry. Without any re-tweak meanwhile, this powerballad aged like the finest of French wines! The composition builds to a powerful crescendo full of emotion, which is additionally amplified by the flawless vocals of Slimane. Wiwi jurors aren’t music professionals (and they repeat it themselves), these scores reflect their opinions. Wiwi Jury has never been about music education or professionalism, but about fun and subjective takes of a group of Eurovision fans.
Opinions can be wrong. Especially when they reflect education-by-drag-meme rather than any kind of respect for quality.
Opinions are, by definition, 100% subjective. One’s subjectively experienced and expressed thoughts/feelings cannot be more or less “right” or “wrong” than anyone else’s. Saying that people’s opinions can be wrong because they don’t fit into an “educated” approach to a topic is the peak of elitism.
Music isn’t only about academic interpretation, and Eurovision isn’t about dissecting note after note to see which composition is closest to what a group of sad people in expensive suits would call “the right music”.

9th place – France You have no idea how much I love this song! It sounds so emotional, pure raw emotion can be heard in his voice. It’s a classic ballad yet very well done. Definitely one of my favourites this year. But France always sends good stuff so I’m not surprised. I’ll be very happy to see this be in the top 10 at least. Well….it deserves a bit better imo but it’s not that serious, this ranking is just for the fun and after all it’s not a so bad ranking for a stripped male ballad. Due vite was 13th last year in the wiwi jury with 7.33, Amar Pelos Dois was 23th with 6.56 for example i 2017 here, so 7.17 is really good for this kind of song.
If there is going to be a surprise at the top of the scoreboard this year it will be from France. A french language song has not won Eurovision since 1988 then it was by the powerhouse that is Celine Dion for Switzerland. France have a classic french ballad full of emotion that history shows in Eurovision when there are a high proportion of uptempo/novelty songs can rise to the top by the artists vocal ability and skill. I think it was just for London, in another pre-party he sang it in Spanish. Unfortunately not in Dutch for the Amsterdam performance, that would’ve been so funny!

26) France – Sometimes songs that are selected first keep my interest all the way through to the show, and some just get lost as more and more songs get released: sadly, France is the latter for me. Slimane is a vocal powerhouse, that’s for certain, but over time it’s just gotten forgettable. I’m not sure if it will have the Barbara Pravi effect where I eventually warm to it and consider it a winner, but at the moment it’s just in the meh tier. Doesn’t help that I sing the chorus to Russia’s 2017 entry over it, either. 4.5/10
You like the song or you don’t, but you can’t deny that he is an amazing singer. You can also hear that the song is quality.

Vocally it may be, but the concept of songs is totally different as to be compared and call one is superior to the other. The whole package of Zorra is iconic, let’s keep that in mind. The final score is very similar anyway.
16TH PLACE: FRANCE: The song itself is a really classical French ballad with pretty cliché lyrics. What really gives it more strength though is Slimane’s interpretation and vocal range. The song does a good job in showcasing his vocal capabilities and throughout the track, he shows nearly every facet of them. We’ve seen since 2021 (with the exception of Fulenn) that France has found its stride in sending songs that are as stereotypically French as possible. While I really liked Voilà and Évidemment had a good studio cut, I’m not really feeling Mon Amour. It’s true that yes for us the trick might have out stayed its welcome, but remember most of Europe will be hearing it for the first time on the night, so have that first listening impact from it that we got.

I’m in a long-term, happy relationship, and this song makes me feel like I’ve got the worst heartache of my life, which is exactly what I want from this type of song.
Yes, it’s nothing new and the instrumentation could be more interesting, but you don’t have to reinvent the wheel every single time, sometimes something simple which hits your feelings works just as well.
