All y’all who haven’t watched Malta’s 24 finalists for Eurovision 2012, get thee to TVM’s official Eurovision page! This year’s semi-finalists are seriously on fire. Wiwi hasn’t watched all of the videos—he was distracted by Cher’s Mediterranean look-a-like. But his early favorite is definitely Fabrizio Faniello with “I Will Fight For You (Papa’s Song).”
Fabrizio, who placed ninth at Eurovision 2001, is singing an ode to his father who, we presume, is dead. That doesn’t exactly scream “feel good hit.” But he’s taken the theme of perseverance and set it to a schlager beat—and that makes everything sound better! The song’s schlager vibe seriously smacks of Melodifestivalen. More specifically, it smacks of Mans Zelmerlow’s “Hope and Glory,” which placed fourth at Sweden’s national selection in 2009. Compare the songs below! Love, Wiwi
