We knew Gor Sujyan’s “Lonely Planet” wasn’t going to be anything like Sirusho’s “Qele Qele” or Eva Rivas’s “Apricot Stone”. After all, he’s a rocker. But we were totally shocked when we realized he’d be singing a blandish rock ballad.
We can’t understand everything he’s saying, but on first listen the song seems to be about holding hands and protecting the Earth. “Lonely Planet who can save you?” he croons. “Who can stop it?” Stop what? Regardless, that storyline is, like, so overplayed at the moment. At least Alyoshia (Ukraine 2010) took on nuclear holocaust with pizzaz! The opening line about “whose the one who starts a war” initially made me think this was going to devolve into some kind of Armenia-Azerbaijan nonsense, but thankfully this isn’t explicitly political!

I’m with Melissa on the ‘Boom Boom’ thing. That was definitely worse. It’s just a shame Armenia couldn’t return with a bang. And by bang, I mean with Sirusho and another amazing ethno-pop entry with tassels on.
You guys are kidding yourselves if you think Eurovision isn’t heavily politicized, with or without explicitly political lyrics. Melissa, I don’t think Armenia participates in the Eurovision Song Contest to gain the respect of fans of mediocre-to-awful pop music but I could be wrong. It seems that he doesn’t have a chance to win ESC!
His own song Toy Planet is much better. He managed to demonstrate his ability, the chorus has a nice melody, with a little bit optimizing it should have been a touching power ballad.
