Ah, Melodifestivalen. Some win, others lose, and some pick themselves up by their bootstraps and try again. (Hey Mr. Saucedo). Here is our speculative short list of the Swedish artists that might make a comeback at next year’s Melodifestivalen.
“Heartbreak Hotel” was the televoters’ favorite in 2013, and the group’s outfits made us wonder if we were in Sweden or Japan (I had to make sure I was speaking an Indo-European language after seeing their costumes). With such a strong showing in 2nd place, why wouldn’t they want to see if they could be big in Denmark?
2. Ulrik Munther
Although he may seem like a Swedish Paradise Oscar, he has potential. He placed 3rd twice, and has had moderate success on the Swedish charts. He is very boyish, and there is a market among teenage girls for that. It worked for Eric Saade, but maybe Ulrik could turn into Eurovision’s teen heartthrob. Who needs One Direction? We have Ulrik Munther!
3. Danny Saucedo
Despite his angry outburst after Melodifestivalen 2012, I’m rooting for him a little bit. Maybe it’s because he placed 2nd twice, or the fact that he seems to have a little more international appeal (or maybe it’s all those shirtless pics). He had moderate success in his Heart Beats days in the European charts, so he may be able to better appeal to different crowds. And he’s certainly been working the p.r. machine. Who hasn’t downloaded one of his songs for free on his official SoundCloud page?
4. Sean Banan
I appreciate Sean Banan’s fresh comedy at Melodifestivalen. Sometimes Eurovision needs a bit of comic relief from the voting blocs, political dramas, and the plagiarism allegations. Just as long as he does not wear a thong (seriously, those pictures are disturbing). Question is this: Will he hang on to Swedish or try to go into English (or Persian even)?
5. Who Knows?
It could be someone new—we just do not know! We know that this list is male-dominated, so maybe it’s time for some girls to have a strong showing in Melodifestivalen. Maybe Carola or Charlotte Perrelli will make a comeback.
Who are you hoping will compete at Melodifestivalen 2014?
