Last week, Jennifer Lopez took to the stage of American Idol and wowed the audiences with her projection dress. However, as Eurovision fans know all too well, the respective gown – also known as the LED dress – is nothing new. It all started in Baku three years ago…
When Sabina Babayeva took to the stage of the Crystall Hall for her performance of the song “When The Music Dies”, we were spellbound. Not only by the song and by Sabina’s voice, but also by her amazing dress, which changed colours in mesmerizing fashion. The projection dress was born!
At the Grammys the following year, US singer Carrie Underwood took the idea to the next level. The dress not only changed colours, but different designs and animations also adorned the gown. The dress had crossed the Ocean in style, y’all!

One thing many viewers noticed was that, in order to maximize the “wow” effect, the owner of the dress had to stand perfectly still. But Aliona Moon from Moldova proved that one can rise up and that the dress can triple in size, further enhancing the fascination. The so-called LED dress is credited for making Aliona Moon literally stand out at the 2013 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, propelling her otherwise unassuming song to the verge of Top 10.
Proving that size does matter, British singer Ellie Goulding stole the look – and the show – at the 2014 Royal Variety Performance, dazzling the crowd in a 600-feet dress. Nobody remembered Ellie’s song the next day, but everyone remembered what she was wearing.

When Bojana Stamenov won Serbia’s national selection for Eurovision with “Ceo Svet Je Moj”, she started her performance with a projection dress as well, before her dancers pulled it off of her – to reveal a regular red dress beneath. The logic of this change failed us, but the projection dress did impress the viewers…
Last but not least, pop superstar Jennifer Lopez left her judge chair on the American Idol to perform the song “Feel The Light” from the upcoming movie “Home”. And feel the light we did, as Jenny’s projection dress overshadowed her vocals to showcase not only some beautiful imagery, but also scenes from the animation film.

So who wore it best? Time to vote now! You can vote for as many dresses you want, but you can only do it one time. The poll will be open until April 3rd at noon CET.

The way that Sabina performed her song is still giving me goosebumps. And for the dress, Sabina’s dress looked a bit simple for this technology, but it was definitely revolutionary.
BTW, a similar dress to Safura’s was also used at the Grammy awards.I don’t remember who wore it, but it’s clear Eurovision brings new trends to the international music industry.
It just goes to show that big shows in USA and UK got their ideas from Europe & Asia 😉
Sabina, Alonia, and Jennier (as craptastic as that song was).
@Mario Heard about that flight. Co-pilot crashed it on purpose. Set course for the mountain and speed up the plane.
I go for Sabina, never seen it before and it was amazing. The others are just following in her footsteps.
yeah Azerbaijan always be first number one and orginal Sabinaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
sabina is the only who wears a dress, and for the rest is a dress wearing a singer. Babayeva did it effortless
Aliona was the only one whose vocal kept up with her dress – a very underrated performance!
Jennifer Lopez by far, although Aliona was cute.
Voted for Aliona, because the best from Eurovision and for Ellie because the best from popstars.
Are we all forgetting the original LED dress, or as RTÉ’s Marty Whelan called it, “A Singing Christmas Tree”? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p62weX__fTc
Aliona Moon!!!
I remember well how I reacted seeing Sabina’s dress. I couldn’t focus on the song. The dress was just distracting me. It looked as if Sabina was on fire. It was odd, considering the fact that the song itself was really great. I still think that too many gimmics can harm the song. “Firing songs” look ridiculous. You have to know how to use such special effects on the dresses. A fine instance is Jeniffer Lopez.
Aliona Moon all the way! The projection dress compliments her singing capabilities and the emotion it brings out.
Aliona, by far.
SABINAAA AZERBAIJAN
Aliona Moon, hands down!
And I am sick of the overly shared JLo thingy because IT’S NOT NEW AND GROUNDBREAKING, you filthy US media!
Maybe it’s because it was the first time I saw something like this or maybe it was the simplicity of it, but I think my favourite was Sabina’s. I also liked that, even if she was relatively still, she still waved her dress a little, it enhanced the feeling that the dress was alive and moving. After the first time, all the others were like “Aww that’s cute, but I’ve seen it before” and that takes away a lot of the wow factor. Another thing, is that it’s a huge distraction from the song, it makes you focus almost completely… Read more »
