Earlier today, the Wiwi Jury – our in-house panel of music unprofessionals, gathered in Valletta to discuss the contestants participating in Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2016 (MESC), the national selection for Malta. Today we look at Dario with his entry “I Love You”. Do we love Dario too, or is Dario moving way too quickly for us? Read on to find out…

DARIO – “I LOVE YOU”

“I LOVE YOU” REVIEWS

Deban: This is one of the most clever entries in this year’s MESC selection. Upbeat, catchy pop with enough suitable interludes in the structure allowing room for ambitious staging, piano, key changes and a featured vocal. Dario’s vocal is powerful without being over-powering, and the refrain of “I Love You” is catchy and universal.

Score: 8/10

George: “I Love You” is a decent song and I believe it has what it takes for Eurovision. It’s a nice upbeat pop song sung by a quite talented singer. Dario’s voice is not bad at all and it kinda reminds me of Robin Stjernberg at some aspects. The only negative thing about this song is the ending – it’s very sharp and it comes at a place you don’t expect it.

Score: 7/10

Josh: Sorry, Dario. But I don’t love you. Yes it’s upbeat and catchy but it sounds like every other uptempo song by a male vocalist in Eurovision in the past five years. Unfortunately it’s quite forgettable. It’s a shame because Dario does have a great voice and he has the potential to be amazing, but I think this song holds him back.

Score: 5/10

Robyn: With so many power anthems in MESC this year, it’s nice to come across a cool, poppy love song. Unexpectedly, a female singer shows up and briefly takes the lead vocal, making Dario her bitch backing singer. It’s so nice to have a super catchy tune like this in the show.

Score: 7/10

William: I don’t love you, particularly the awkward bridge of “day by day, step by step, all we need is forgiveness.” In fact, I need you to write a big apology for these cheesy lyrics, the repeated use of “these powerful words” and the dated sound.

Score: 4/10

Zakaria: Meh! It breaks my heart to see a good vocalist such as Dario singing such an insipid and ordinary song. The song doesn’t evolve at all and stays in the same boring monotonous tone for the whole three minutes. Even Dario sounds bored singing it…  Next please!

Score: 3/10

@Ben: I agree. If the voters are split between both of Ira Losco’s songs, this could sneak in as an upset winner.
