Earlier in the month Barei released a revamp of her Eurovision 2016 song “Say Yay!”
And ever since then Eurofans have been blowing up our YouTube channel asking us to sound off on the final version of the song.
Spanish wiwiblogger Diego had a listen and was full of praise for Spain’s Eurovision entry.
The changes are subtle yet powerful: The drums beat louder and harder, giving the song some added drama, and the backing vocalists come through more clearly in the chorus. She’s also added more funk elements and some soulful trumpets, creating a new and technically improved entry for Eurovision 2016. Yes, she has managed to give a lively song even more life and a smoother finish.
More recently wiwibloggers Deban, Padraig and William had a kiki on Skype to debate the merits of the song. Padraig is LOVING IT, while Deban is rather frosty. You can watch our house divided below.
We react to Barei’s final version of ‘Say Yay’
But what do YOU think? Do you prefer the original or the revamp? Or do you struggle to notice a difference? Let us know in our poll and comments section.

Is english the official language of Spain? C’mon spanish people be proud of your langauge…
I Hate this song, and Barey is only been chosen by spain because of her rich parents who pay for the trip to stockholm
@Sonne, I can understand you 🙂 my favs are France, Spain, Poland and Georgia (thou I have realistic expectations about last two, will be happy if they can pass semis). different but favorite each for their own reason.
Deban hates it. It will do well.
Poland and this one are my huge favorites
Someone may think I have a polarized taste of music because these two sound very different
It might be true, just that I see music as any other art
Sights meet my eye, sounds go through my ear but at the end it is really “more than meets the eye” or the ear, in this case
To me these two go in parallel ways to finish in the same place
They really find my soul
Not much love from the wiwibloggs staff, I see.
It’s fine. Somebody needs to slow down our hype machine. Let people talk themselves: Top 1 for youtubers. Top 1-3 for wiwibloggs visitors. Top 5-10 in many other sites and independent polls. Hope this transfers into a fair voting result for what Barei does in Stockholm.
I know some of my compatriots like to see us highly considered but I rather fly under the radar and try our luck when it counts. I’m confident with what we have, no need to embellish it by being over supportive.
This may be one of the best (most entertaining) reviews you guys have done. Right up there with the reaction to the Belgian Eurosong entries.
And it was fun seeing Padraig as the enthusiastically positive voice for once… 🙂
The funny thing is that the ones who are saying that Spain is going To flop, are saying that Russia is amazing, OMG you’ve no taste xD
I’m spanish, and I’m the First one To critisize our entries (no promos, bad staging…) but this year I have good vibes, she works a lot, the song is great, the staging is gonna be really cool, so I hope Spain will get a top 10 maybe 5 (Don’t think so)
My favs are: Italy, France, Spain, Latvia, Estonia, Ukraine, Iceland, Hungary and Malta
It’s not that it’s a bad song, but it will flop so bad.
I prefer her old live version. Her raw power is what I’m after 🙂
I was not a fan of the original but I am loving the revamp. It sits at Number 10 in my personal rankings. It would great for Spain to win.
Hmmm the revamp comes across as a little bit messy imo
Like the trumpets sound too theatrical and the drums seem to come out of nowhere (plus her styling in the
music video looks strangely 80’s)
I feel like I would like both the revamp and the original if not for the weird highly defensive attitude of some of the Spanish fans tho
Definitely the best Spanish entry in years and my personal favourite since Dime- Beth.
Could be this year’s fan wank that flops but let’s just wait until May. Either way the revamped version is great!
Acoustic version of Say yay! Fantastic!

The big dark horse of 2016. The song has mainstream appeal, that’s why is getting viral in many european countries, is really addictive and she is really good at live. If the staging is at the same level they are going top 10 and even top 5 this year. Haters gonna hate, but this is best spanish entry in a very long time and definitively one of the best songs of this year.
and all those visionaries who say that it will end up in the bottom, please tell me who’s wanna win, I would like to bet and earn some money 😀
Revamp version +1000: it sounds urban, fast, edgy and contemporary, and in a sea of bland r&b ballads that we have this year, say yay just stands out. It screams top 5
Live performance from National Final is the reason why I started to like it. And the dancing is a big part of it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvQAfcYwCgo This one is the best version of the song
I think once again we are kinda overrating Spain. Yes, it’s probably best Spanish entry since early 2000 but still not good enough (it’s a bit dated yes) and the competion is harder now. However, “Say yay” is for some reason working better commertially here in Spain than last entries, doing quite well on itunes, and it’s played on our most watched tv show but not yet on the main radio stations. We’ll see, but it will depend on the performance and that’s usually a weakness for Spain.
Why all of this bad comments?…
Guys.. enjoy! Listen to this song, take a beer, smoke a cigar dance and feel it… and if u like another song, just change the track… but please.. do not forget eduacation, good manners and Running Scared 😀
Is this some kind of trick question? First let me say that the old version was just a “music skeleton”, an all-pianica structure out of the blue creation just few weeks before the national final. This sort of “demo” was defended by an almost completely unknown independent artist in Spain, which overcame all itself some finished quality products like “Victorious” backed by a spanish tv popular figure in Xuso Jones (who btw already had thought about an scenography for his song) or the only spanish Eurovision winner in the last 45 years, Maria Isabel (Eurojunior contest). People can be sure… Read more »
Sorry haters, but this the 2016 WINNER!
Kisses from France.
It would be much appreciated if the song had a chorus. It starts off quite nice but it then develops into a lot of rubbish la la la and yay yay yaya. This song would be ok for the junior eurovision, but I’m not buying it for the senior
The new style of Spain is bad?
I love Barei! I like the revamp and the original song equally, but I have to ask what makes so much of you believe this song will flop? Like seriously give me some reasons.
I can’t understand the fact that “Say Yay” is so appreciated, maybe I’m not human but dudes, that song is just BAD.
I say nay.
At first the revamp made it fall down my rankings a little, but now that I’ve gotten used to it I like it just as much as the original version. Saying that I do miss the trumpets(?) towards the end of the song.
Both versions are just bad.
I see some haters trying to convince people this is not a good song…outdated? boring? cheap? ….oh my god! This is for sure one of the best entries this year! Please stop hating this masterpiece… haters show non independent reasons, only thinking on their own countries songs
Love it!! especially the way the song ends. There’s emphasis on the song’s empowering message: “raise your battle cry”. I hope that the juries will love it too.
Part of the chorus has been ruined.
But I do still think this could be a winner. I mean, no one saw Baku 2012 coming…
The revamp lost a little power for me. The original is better.
Spain will flop so hard!
I would like to highlight that in the light of my comment that she will end up in the bottom five was given in relation to how dire her performance of the song at the Spanish National Final.
When she was singing as a guest in Ukraine, she sounded marginally better.
I’m expecting her to be better in Stockholm as the sound quality will be a lot better!!
But, that said, I stand by my comment that she will be lucky to get into the top 10. I’m predicting between 12th and 18th!
Watch the acoustic version. AMAZING!!!! Definitely Barei winner!!! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OMnV86H8rBE
If you didnt tell me there was a revamp I wouldnt have noticed there was one. This revamp is very subtle
Seriously? It still is the same song … so whatever revamp it took place, it did not make it qualitative better or worse. It still sounds pretty much the same to me …
Now if you want to comment on the Israeli ballad … then the question makes far more sense (but I get it … it’s not an uptempo tune to brag about).
I agree with JonathanUK. For me this is one of the five worst entries this year. I realize I am clearly in the minority on this one, but I just find this number tedious and repetitive.
At first I wasn’t really feeling it, but now I love it (and mostly the added funk-elements).
She will end in the bottom five!!!!???? Oh guy, you are an absolute hater more than an objective eurofan.
