Four months ago her brother Daniel died of cancer — just days after she lost her husband René Angélil.

But on Friday, after an understandable absence from the spotlight, Eurovision 1988 winner Céline Dion re-emerged from seclusion with a new single devoted to her husband of 21 years.

“The Show Must Go On” is signature Céline, tugging on heartstrings with poignant lyrics and a mix of classic and modern instrumentation.

The lyrics acknowledge Céline’s pain, but ultimately focus more on perseverance and carrying on.

“Inside my heart is breaking, my make-up may be flaking, but my smile still stays on…the show must go on.”

Speaking to People magazine earlier this week, she said that she and René, who was also her manager, kept their romance under wraps for years.

“I was living that love secretly,” she says. Then, “when I was at the age to be able to say to people, it was like bang! Love! Love always wins.”

As she continues to foster the career that René helped create, she proves the point again.

“The Show Must Go On” lyrics — Celine Dion

Empty spaces – what are we living for
Abandoned places – I guess we know the score
On and on, does anybody know what we are looking for…
Another hero, another mindless crime
Behind the curtain, in the pantomime
Hold the line, does anybody want to take it anymore
The show must go on,
The show must go on
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on.
Whatever happens, I’ll leave it all to chance
Another heartache, another failed romance
On and on, does anybody know what we are living for?
I guess Im learning, I must be warmer now
I’ll soon be turning, round the corner now
Outside the dawn is breaking
But inside in the dark Im aching to be free
The show must go on
The show must go on
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on
My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies
Fairytales of yesterday will grow but never die
I can fly – my friends
The show must go on
The show must go on
I’ll face it with a grin
Im never giving in
On – with the show –
I’ll top the bill, I’ll overkill
I have to find the will to carry on
On with the –
On with the show –
The show must go on..

As a cover of Queen’s song, i prefer the one made by another eurovision diva: Dana International, with her sublime “Ha-hatzga Chayyevet L-himshakh (Show Must Go On)”… so, sorry Celine

She wasn’t exactly in “seclusion” – she’s been performing her Las Vegas show nightly! She returned to stage in heroic fashion in February. The woman is a star.

Their relationship is especially poignant for Eurovision fans, given that they had their first kiss in Dublin at the 1988 contest. RIP, René!
