The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — continues to review the six acts competing in Czechia’s national final Eurovision Song CZ. Next up is garage rock band Doctor Victor with their song “Stand Up”. Did it have us on our feet? Read on to find out!

Doctor Victor – “Stand Up”

“Stand Up” reviews

Kristin: I have a feeling that Doctor Victor are actually a lot heavier than this tune indicates. This softcore rock has some AC/DC feeling to it, one can also hear a lot of Van Halen too — and I’m definitely more than okay with everything going on! I don’t see it go all the way to Lisbon, but I sure as hell will put this on my playlist and bang my head like its 1979.

Score: 7.5/10

Mikhail: I wasn’t that excited about this band, but I can easily say that I quite enjoyed listening to it. It is not something I would download and, moreover, it gets a bit repetitive as well as old-fashioned. However, I don’t have any impulse to turn it off and that’s great.

Score: 5/10

Deban: This Prague-based rock trio are serving lame lyrics whilst teasing derivative choreography. “Stand Up” is a lazy pastiche of what rock music is. Halfway through, I am left feeling completely disengaged. Despite their cross-border success, this cut of hard rock is limp and doesn’t deserve to advance.

Score: 3/10

Robyn: Aw yeah! This classic rock sound is working. Doctor Victor are like the spiritual heirs of AC/DC and deliver a nice crunchy, warm rock number. And weirdly enough, this would probably work at Eurovision. Doctor Victor know how to put on a show and a song like “Stand Up” is destined to be performed in an arena. Rock on!

Score: 7.5/10

Antranig: I’m a big fan of several Eurovision rock entries but too often you see things like this which are terribly executed. Lyrically, this goes quickly down a dead-end street with no handbrake. The guitar solo is undoubtedly the most enjoyable part of it and it lifts the song to a somewhat enjoyable level. In the end, the best I can say is that this sounds like a contemporary FiK entry.

Score: 4/10

Josh: Every national final has to have their token rock entry, and the Czech Republic didn’t want to feel left out. It’s unfortunate that they stooped to Doctor Victor because for a rock song, it’s incredibly disengaging and actually very boring. A good rock entry is easy to support provided it still has a catchy hook to keep it memorable, but it fails to deliver across the board.

Score: 3/10

For what it is, it’s not too bad. It will appeal to certain people. But what it is, also, is stuck in the 20th Century. And stop telling me to stand up, already! 4/10

I’m not a fan of rock music, however there are rock songs I like. This one isn’t good. It sounds like a 3 minute noise.

This is an opposite situation of “We Rule the World”. While the aformentioned song never climaxes and feels monotone, “Stand Up” is on full speed from start to finish. It has only climaxes throughout and never gets to express any build-up or variation.
