Semi-Final 1 of Eurovision 2018 is officially on. Tonight nineteen countries competed in the jury show, facing a panel of musical experts in this semi’s competing countries (and also Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom).

Wiwibloggers Chris, Deban, Padraig and William were watching live inside the press centre. Afterwards they awarded their 8, 10 and 12 points. We won’t spoil the surprise, but you can see our concise comments and scores in the video above.

Who were your favourites? Who do you think is going to take the cake on Tuesday evening?

our house had Ireland. Austria, Finland and Bulgaria as faves however having seen Cyprus at the end we just had to add her to our list. So sad about Belgium who have for the last few years been bringing in cutting edge stuff that we love but sadly the staging was to blame for her loss. Try harder next time Belgium please and give your acts a better chance.

I was so sad my Greece didn’t go through. They were true to themselves with a Greek sounding song, sung in Greek, lyrics with heart and soul. Year after year we enter English Pop songs, this year Greece wanted to be themselves. Kurt Cobain once said “I’d rather be hated for who I am, than loved for being someone I am not” It is always a risk to not sing in English, but I feel Greece were true to themselves this year, and for me that was an honorable performance that as a Greek I am proud of, despite it… Read more »

I don’t altogether think it is a bad thing to compare an act to another act, people however will vote for the performance of the night and there is no denying she got the whole World up and dancing. One thing I did notice though were the first few bars of her song sounded very much like 2016 Bulgaria Poli Genova’s “If Love Was a Crime” but that’s no bad thing either. What is that old saying again, oh yes…………………………’.Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery’.

Funny how some people are putting Cyprus down because the singer is “cheap and classless,” and are promoting Israel to win because it’s all about women empowerment.

Well, guess what. Don’t support the #metoo movement if what you do is bring other women down and shame them. That’s not how it’s supposed to work, boo.

Well the message of being uplifted neither fit with the choregraphy nor the whole atmosphere in the performance or the video. If you compare with Euphoria where the message and the whole performance was coherent. Loreen had so much more content than this entry and still was dance floor ffiendly. Critizising Cyprus for being not feminist is not to downgrade or shaming the artist. However being a woman does not make you free from using stereotypes in genders and it should be possible to critizise a woman for using such stereotypes as well as men.

Sorry but the question is not about class or bringing down a woman but how you portray yourself being aware of the message you bring to the world. It is an interesting contrast between Cyprus och Israel. Two ways of using women power that are almost opposites. One is the traditional sexy woman, trying to attract by being on fire and shaking her hair and body. The performance is full of cliches and completly without humor. The message is yes she is powerful but she needs to expose her extreme beauty to have power. It is a conditional power relying… Read more »

I am a person who mainly values the song quality, thus I will write my personal top 10, based on studio version, also mind, these are not who I think will qualify:
1. Albania
2. Belgium
3. Greece
4. Belarus
5. Bulgaria
6. Finland
7. Austria
8. Ireland
9. Czechia
10. Estonia

It could well be that after the live performances my preference would change, but this an honest Hungarian’s opinion, who is not a typical Eurovision fan

Greece must be beside itself. Not only have they rejected Eleni time and time again. They now see her as a sure qualifier and leading the odds for another country while they might fail to qualify. Odds are Eleni will steal traditional diaspora votes leaving Greece vulnerable. Justice must be sweet for Eleni after being turned away so many times and even having to see in press she was second choice to Helena. I could not see Helena do this Eleni performance or do justice to Fuego like Eleni does.

Greece cannot afford organizing the contest (nor can many other countries, incl. Cyprus, to be honest). Yet every time Greece doesn’t do well – which to them means winning or being in the top 5, a syndrome that began after one win and two good positions – the blame game begins: they are being sabotaged and wrongly treated and their song deserved a top position etc. Never once do they admit that perhaps their song and performance just isn’t or wasn’t good enough and did not appeal to the judges and televoters. I’m sorry? How does her dancing go against the #metoo movement? I see a woman who’s confident in her own skin, who’s not afraid to show what she has and what she’s worked for. Now don’t give me that “she’s calling for it” comment because that is some utter sh*t. That is what exactly the #metoo movement is fighting against, putting the blame on women whenever sexual harassment occurs. How a woman acts or dresses is NEVER a reason.

Feminism and sexual empowerment aren’t mutually exclusive. Sex-positive feminism caters the idea that being sexually free is a part of a woman’s freedom, as long as the activities between the two parties is CONSENSUAL. False analogy. You can’t compare women who are from different backgrounds with positions that limit/allow their freedom of expression. Besides, what Eleni is doing is only a form of women empowerment. There are many ways wherein you can show you are grown, independent woman. A girl who is wearing a trench coat and a top hat can be as empowered as her. Cyprus.. oh dear. It could have won 10-15 years ago. Ass-shaking girl with a seen-it-before type of performance. What happened?? But on the positive side.. it’s a country that has never won before.

Yes, but I miss the sound. I don’t think it’s allways bad when the music have influenses from earlier yeas

Toy is starting to sink in the odds…how shocking would be seeing her eliminated in the SF after being a huge favorite all these previous months? She clearly has breathing problems to sing this song. Should’ve never taken a fat…sorry fast song in her physical conditions. I hope she can nail that high note at the end, full chicken style… cookorookooo!

Even though Cyprus isn’t particularly my favorite, Eurovision should have such a winner. After Jamala and Salvador i don’t want to see Elina or MM also win.

Albania can only qualify if people vote today. “Let’s do this” (The way Eugent rocked this in the interview sounds in my head right now, I think wiwibloggs should make something out of this snippet)
